Why is it that neither of you can actually converse appropriately? I've just got done warning several other posts for this exact same attitude.

Cut out the occasionally-passive-aggressive, back-handed, dismissive bullshit. I'm done with it. Temporary bans are next without further warnings.

He didn't even quote me right, nor was I even talking to him, I was criticizing the DBZ DUB in relation to the Kai dub.

"Seiyen" is wrong, if you disagree then you're reading the work incorrectly.
More like it's ingrained into English itself. As a child of German, English expects harsher noises from its words. "Say" is harder than "sigh", especially with the loss of the hard j.

It's the same reason "Yamhan" sounds bad.
But it isn't spelt Sayan. It's spelt Saiyan. As I said, it's a needless change.
SaiyamanMS wrote:what's wrong with "Solar Flare"? "Taiyou-ken" is "Sun Fist", or rather "The Sun Attack", it's a blinding flash of light associated with the sun. "Solar Flare" seems like a pretty decent adaptation of the term.
I'm not saying it's an indecent translation, I'm saying there's a total lack of consistency in what they do and don't translate. Some things get translated (Solar Flare), while others remain in their original form (Kaio-ken).

So, like Bleach's dub then!

Bleach's dub tries its hardest to not translate anything; care to name some examples? None pop out at me immediately.(except maybe Rukia's spells where the incantation is in English and the actual spell is Japanese)

And yeah, I would have preferred all-Japanese attacks or all-translated-correctly attacks.
batistabus wrote:What's the problem with Chichi?
For me, personally, Cynthia Cranz's "excited" Chichi is far too overbearing. Other than that, I don't see a real problem. The anime gutted Chichi to a one-note bitch, so it's not like she's hard to play.

Well, it's definitely not on Kai levels, but having so many things in Japanese (as you've said) like "Zanpakuto", and then translating "Shinigami" as "Soul Reaper" always seemed a tad random to me.

Not saying it's necessarily bad or anything.

Heh, yeah. It's been a couple of years since I've last seen Bleach, so I forgot about those.

The problem with Chichi is that she doesn't talk like a hick. This is a problem... because she IS a hick.

While that is true, the problem is it would likely come off as too silly in English. Lots of "hick" characters, either intentionally or not, come off as joke characters. I'd bust out laughing if she sounded like that.

That's silly. I don't get why people think it wouldn't work. :/

Invaders, intruders, rogue spirits, outsiders... Millions of ways to translate it, but they don't.

For Kienzan? Taiyo-ken? Kaio-ken? Probably better to just keep them in Japanese. Translating them usually comes off awkwardly as they often rely on Japanese' ability to combine words rather seamlessly, unlike English where it comes off incredibly hokey.

Solar Flare isn't a bad translation of Taiyo-ken, though. But Demon Drill Beam? Fist of the World? Cutting Energy Disk? Some are just a mouthful while others... are just bad sounding.

Then AGAIN, you could come up with new names that match the spirit of the original attack name. No Destructo Disc, though... That's retarded.

I'd bet if they'd translated Makankosappo into something good like 'Demon Spiral Drill' ('Evil Spiral Drill' for TV?) from the beginning, we'd all be used to it and love it.

Spiritual Pressure, Spirit Energy, and reishi always annoys me.

And, I have no problem with adapting a phrase to sound better in English. Kienzan? "Energy Disc" works well enough. The "cutting" isn't really integral, once you actually see what it does. There's also "Energy Slicer," though that's treading on corn territory.

Nothing sounds as cool as Makankosappo. And really, if I were director, I'd make decisions based on what sounds coolest.

Thing I thought was kinda funny/weird was that Viz had been using "Soul Reaper" in the manga even before the Bleach anime premiered in Japan, but no one complained until the dub premiered then people started calling them blasphemous.

Would you really want Chi Chi sounding like Cannonball, Rogue, or Brandine?

I hear people complaining all the time that the voice actress pronounces her son's name as "Geau-han" due to her southern accent. Which is preferred then? Or is this the kind of thing like Goku should talk with "ain't" and without g's at the end of words ending in "ing"?

Rogue? Rogue, as far as I can recall, doesn't sound like a hick. She just sounds... southern. There can be quite a difference, mostly dealing with levels of education. Rogue sounds fairly intelligent. Chichi... simply shouldn't.
