"DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
I'm watching the episode right now, after just having watched the clip from season three...and you'd have to had some sort of hearing impairment to think this was season 3 Goku area.
Goku, as Ginyu, is in pain, so he wouldn't be his normally light and cheery self. He's gritting in pain while speaking, and it's auditory. Did you expect exactly the same tone as his normal self? Every time he changes his tone when he's in pain or mad people act like the "Season 3" demon is coming out from under their bed to bite them.
Of course, this is my own opinion, and you're entitled to your own. *tries to avoid being too defensive at any time on things I like*

I must be crazy because all I hear is a poor attempt at grunts, pain, and dialouge that's convincing of said agony. Again, this could be a fluke and Schemmel will hopefully be back to his regular 'Goku' in tomorrow's episode.Mewzard wrote:I'm watching the episode right now, after just having watched the clip from season three...and you'd have to had some sort of hearing impairment to think this was season 3 Goku area.

A Dragon Ball/Urusei Yatsura crossover would be awesome.
Having Toshio Furukawa balance between Piccolo and Ataru would be hilarious.

Well, this is a discussion board, and certain people are going to have certain opinions that differ from yours. Just because Schemmel has improved doesn't mean he's suddenly immune to criticism. If people feel there's something to discuss about, well, anything DB-related, they're entitled to do so, I would think.DB_Fan1991 wrote:but I hate it when people criticize Sean's Goku in Kai.

I think what he meant was that he hates the overly picky criticisms that seem to assume any slight changes in tone are jumping back to season 3, despite not sounding anywhere near the same tone or poorly acted as.Gaffer Tape wrote:Well, this is a discussion board, and certain people are going to have certain opinions that differ from yours. It's not a perfect performance, but a growing one. Not every single episode will be his peak work (it's not an ideal world), but the overall performance over a period improving is what we can hope for.

Yay, Gohan's laughing doesn't make my ears bleed this time! As for Sean, eh, Goku was in pain in this episode. Really, what's the problem, his straining? Sure it can be much at times but it's really no more annoying than Nozawa's straining as adult Goku. In fact hers can be, at times, more so.

Schemmel's pained Goku in the episode didn't even sound much like his usual pained Goku. He did a bit better in the Saiyan arc in straining and acting like he was really in agony, but without sounding so forced. He's starting to take a step backwards in his performance just when he was making some ground with it. In this episode, he sounded like a guy in a lot of pain, but that guy wasn't Goku.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. Schemmel can do pain (I'll give him that), but in this episode it sounded off. Like my problems with last Wednesday's episode, he's going a step back and I'm getting season 3 vibes.penguintruth wrote:Schemmel's pained Goku in the episode didn't even sound much like his usual pained Goku. Well maybe because Goku was in a lot of pain, but not to the point of agony. Really, when it comes to pain sounds and people getting hurt, there shouldn't be total consistency, at least by real life comparisons. Your mileage will vary and your pain will differ depending on the injury. having a hole in your chest vs. every bone broken and crushed by a giant space monkey, BIG difference.

He says "Ryuuzoku no tensaiji" in the anime too, but Daimao translated that as "Dragon-type prodigy".Herms wrote:Hmmm...in the mange he says "prodigy of the Dragon Clan" (Ryuuzoku no tensaiji). Does the anime really change that to "Dragon-type"?
Schemmel is not the only Goku in English. Kelamis and Morrow both voiced Gokuh after Schemmel started voicing him in 1998. And even though Kelamis sounds nothing like Nozawa in his Gokuh's speaking voice, he still sounds like Gokuh.DB_Fan1991 wrote:Just because Sean sounds nothing Nozawa doesn't mean he's terrible. Season 3? Really? I honestly find that extremely hard to believe, considering how much Schemmel has improved in Z Kai and how damn terrible he was in Season 3.penguintruth wrote:This episode is not nearly as well-dubbed as the previous. Vegeta, Ginyu, Kuririn, and Gohan all sound pretty good, but Schemmel's Goku is worse than ever, sounding like this was season 3 of DBZ's dub and Jeice is still terrible.
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
That's the thing. Even when you found nothing all that solid to complain about in prior comments, you said the exact same thing, that seemingly no matter what he does, he's not Goku.penguintruth wrote:Schemmel's pained Goku in the episode didn't even sound much like his usual pained Goku. I disagree; to me, he sounds exactly like Goku, he is Goku to me. I'll go out on a limb, and even say he's more Goku to me than Nozawa. At first, I didn't like his Goku all that much. In season three, his Goku was a mixture of a poor Kelamis imitation, poor acting, and a poor script. But, he grew in acting skill and moved away from the imitation to something much more natural. With Kai, he's improved even further in acting, he's made his Goku voice closer to what some would view Goku as, while keeping it close to his own natural speaking voice (making conversations flow better), and is working with a MUCH better script.
My love for Nozawa grows more and more as I watch through the entire series in Japanese on my Dragon Boxes (I'm watching them rather closely together, Namek Saga with both so far)...yet, my love for Schemmel grows too, as I enjoy his Goku more as it improves, especially in this "season three" era material. For him to be creeping up on season three territory, he would have to massively alter his voice from where it normally is in series (even in this last episode), he would have to give much worse delivery, and he would have to declare that he was the creature of the night (all joking aside, I'm referring to the hammy dialog of old).
I do love that we're on a forum where so many different views and opinions can be discussed. Group A sees something that Group B doesn't, Group B shows what they see, and discussion a plenty comes from it. I wish I was more forum active during my earlier years in the fandom, would have been fun.

I meant in America. I do know of the Westwood dub, but I was talking about only FUNi's dub.linkdude20002001 wrote:Schemmel is not the only Goku in English. Then you need to be more specific. Knowledge of both dubs is common. Also, there are people for whom Schemmel never will be the English Goku, it may be Kelamis or Morrow.DB_Fan1991 wrote:I meant in America. I think so because there are times where he has no accent, so I'm putting 2 & 2 together. I guess we'll find out whenever the 3rd set comes out for sure.batistabus wrote:Don't count on it.DB_Fan1991 wrote:It's likely Jeice will only sound like this for the TV Dub (i.e. Aussie accent). That's just inconsistency in his voice acting. We know they change stuff for the home release, but I can't see them changing an entire actor's performance.DB_Fan1991 wrote:I think so because there are times where he has no accent, so I'm putting 2 & 2 together. I'm with you. He has a lot of dialogue and recording an alternate non-Aussie take for every single line is 99.99999999 percent not likely.batistabus wrote:That's just inconsistency in his voice acting. Also, the people criticizing Schemmel's Goku from this episode have really no solid ground to stand on.
His direction from Chris was probably "There's a hole in your chest. You're in a lot of pain while you're saying these lines."
I really don't think he could have done much better of a job of recreating that.
Until his voice goes incredibly up in pitch and we hear a lot of "KKCHCKKCKKCCKKHHCKCHCKHCCKHHHCKCKCKKKHH", I don't think anyone criticizing him right now is ever going to be impressed by it.

Maybe Sean Schemmel's fans should just stop being highly sensitive to criticism of the guy's work? Seriously, why do you think it's some kind of personal attack? That's a little paranoid. I'd like to go on the record as to saying I'm not someone who is incredibly sensitive to any criticism of Schemmel.
In this particular instance though, I don't think it's entirely justified.
I don't think it's so much as people who criticize Sean won't learn, as much as people who don't like it when Sean's criticized won't learn that somebody else is going to dislike his acting.
