Sagas (not just the dubs)

Sagas (not just the dubs)

Was the concept of “Sagas” there when the show originally began in Japan?

I don't know exactly what you mean...Every long running series is divided by major story arcs, if that's what you mean.

Yeah, but in the dub, they specifically list it as "The Androids Saga," "The Cell Saga," ect.
He wants to know if that's how it went in Japan. Because I don't really see most anime actually have saga names.

Story arcs flow naturally in any long-running story. They aren't really given names until they've had time to develop.

That said, there were only four "sagas" in Dragon Ball Z: Vegeta, Freeza, Cell and Majin Buu. No Ginyu saga, no Great Saiyaman saga, just the main four. I prefer it that way, as to me a handful of episodes is not a "saga."

I used to like the larger saga blocks myself (of which there's only 3. Freeza, Androids, and Buu) but lately I prefer to break it down more, to make it easier to seperate things. It comes in VERY handy for writing fanfiction and dealing with matters of strength (as Goku's considerably stronger at the Cell Games than during the Trunks Saga).

<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita

Yeah, you could view it as only three major story arcs, since Vegeta was under submission to Freeza and his presence inevitably led to Freeza. But I think of it as four since the Saiyans' presence was a thing on its own, even if they were under Freeza's submission. The many different "sagas" the dub uses is just a marketing tool to distinguish certain parts of a larger story arc.

Well, it obviously wasn't there as it began, since they weren't certain at the time where the story would be going. I'd say the sagas just formed out of the natural progression of events and introductions of new major plot elements. That being said, there are several listings of "sagas" from Japanese sources.

Dragonball:

Toei's website lists 6 major plot arcs. Meeting Bulma, 21st Budokai, Searching for Suushinchuu, 22nd Budokai, Daimao, 23rd Budokai.

Shueisha's Dragonball anime guide "Tenka'ichi Densetsu" lists 7 major plot arcs. Basically the same as Toei's website, except it splits apart the Red Ribbon and Uranai Baba arcs.

Pony Canyon's "Dragon Book" goes all out and lists 11 arcs. Added to the list are Kame Sennin's training, Goku's around the world training arc, Kami's training, as well as the post-23rd Budokai "wedding dress in flames" arc.

Dragon Ball Z:

Toei's website split it into the general 4 arcs (Saiyan, Freeza, Cell, Majin Buu).

Pony Canyon's "Dragon Book Z" Volumes 1 and 2 split the series into 9 major arcs. Saiyan, Namek, Freeza, Garlic Jr., Artificial Humans, Cell, Anoyo'ichi Budokai, High School and Majin Buu.

(Shueisha's "Son Goku Densetsu" doesn't seem to list story arcs, only specific battles, 15 in total)

Dragon Ball GT:

Toei's website has 4 arcs listed. The Black Star Dragonball stuff, Bebi, Super 17 and the Evil Dragons.

Eras of Sagas?

Post by Akira » Thu May 26, 2005 8:15 pm

I doubt there is one true way of distinguishing parts of the story. As we have seen there are various methods used by different groups involved with Dragonball and various fan interpretations. I myself have always blocked things together in segments that happened sequentially without large time periods in between of non-activity

This is my personal breaking up of story arcs. I use a term "Eras" that contain mutliple "Sagas". If you like this, that's cool, if not then use your method. I by no means am attempting to push one way on anyone who prefers a different method as I surely realize there are many different ways to catagorize it all. It merely catagorizes the named Sagas used by the Funimation DVD releases.

Initial Era
-Saga of Goku
-21st World Tournament Saga

Red Ribbon Era
-Red Ribbon Army Saga
-General Blue Saga
-Commander Red Saga
-Fortune Teller Baba Saga

Daimao Era
-Tenshinhan Saga (22nd World Tournament)
-Demon Piccolo Saga (Part 1)
-Demon Piccolo Saga (Part 2)

Junior Era
-Piccolo Junior Saga (Part 1)
-Piccolo Junior Saga (Part 2) (23rd World Tournament)

Freeza Era
-Vegeta Saga
-Namek Saga
-Captain Ginyu Saga
-Freeza Saga
-Garlic Junior Saga
-Trunks Saga

Cell Era
-Android Saga
-Imperfect Cell Saga
-Perfect Cell Saga
-Cell Games Saga

Buu Era
-Great Saiyaman Saga
-25th World Tournament Saga
-Babidi Saga
-Majin Buu Saga
-Fusion Saga
-Kid Buu Saga

Bebi Era
-Black Star Dragonballs Saga
-Bebi Saga

Final Era
-Super Android 17 Saga
-Shadow Dragons Saga

Again, just my take on the breakdown of story arcs.

That's a good list, but the Buu era could also include the End of DBZ saga I suppose. These would be the last few episodes that take place about 10 years or so after Kid Buu is destroyed. Although, I'm not sure how funimation grouped these eps or which saga they have them part of.

In the Funimation dub, that three episodes are still part of the Kid Buu Saga.
