Although the footage of Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans is the 'big' selling point for the game, I'll most likely be picking up Raging Blast 2 for Ayres. :)

Just saw "Vermin!!" and it's alright. It didn't really send shivers down my spine, but it's okay. Maybe he sounds scarier when just talking normally. :|

He does. Way creepier. Just watch the episode where he attacks the Namek village.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Ayres Freeza is so phenomenal I actually would line up for his autograph at an anime con, he really has made the role of Freeza in English a definitive one, same could be said for Gohan. However it's Ayres Freeza which I feel will really stick with me when I look back when this dub is finished. He really matches one of Toriyama's most brilliantly designed characters and no other voice could ever go hand in hand with his elegant dialogue. He really is Ryusei Nakao's English equivalent, and yes his "vermin" line was epic.

I think it just sounds like an older version of Linda's. I find it not so scary, but i do find that Frieza is easily the greatest villain of all time. Of that I'm sure. 8)

He sucked in his first appearance. It's like they were deliberately faking us out. Watch the next episode.

Linda Young's Freeza definitely scares me... but for all of the wrong reasons.

Why are you and other people expecting to be scared by his voice? It's not his voice that's supposed to be scary, it's the fact that he's basically committing genocide on the Namekians, all the while keeping a calm and cool demeanor about it, as though he's simply conducting business as usual. Not to mention his polite, pompous attitude he keeps (and then loses entirely, such as as the end of 33, which was always completely lost on the dub of Z).

Even then, I'm pretty sure he's not supposed to be "haunting" or "nightmare-inducing", maybe just a bit creepy.

Because of Sean Schemmel. He was al like "It's actually really scary now" or something like that. Yeah, I also think he's just supposed to be a bit creepy.

Oh yeah, him and Sabat both were going on about that... I wonder if they were truly scared by it, or if that was just them trying to convince dub fans to support their decision to recast Frieza? I mean, some people are claiming to be frightened by his voice, but I just don't get it.

Well, strictly speaking they didn't use the word "scary," they used the word, "creepy." I don't know how many of you are familiar with a guy called "The Nostalgia Critic," (if you're not you should be, he's hilarious, check his videos), but he actually used both those words to compare the two different actors to play the Joker in the Batman movies. He said that Jack Nicholson's Joker was more "creepy," but that Heath Ledger's Joker was actually "scary." He made a point to emphasize the difference. Anyway, not to detract from Dragon Ball too much, my point is that they're different words with different feelings associated with them.

That's how I think of Ryusei Nakao's performance, personally. Nakao's performance is the one performance in the sub version that I absolutely love. I would say he's more creepy than scary, myself. Then again, almost nothing scares me in movies or TV shows anymore. I haven't seen what I consider to be a really scary movie in a really long time.

So, I haven't been particularly scared, but then again, like Metalwario64 said, some people have been. Ayers is sufficiently creepy enough for me, so...I'm sold. I'd say I still like Nakao a little bit better, but I love Ayers to the point where I still find myself actively looking forward to future dub episodes just to hear his performance.

Oh, yeah. It's been a while since I've seen it so I wasn't sure. Well, nice to see that they were just calling it creepy. Though, as stated, I don't think the voice itself is creepy (as Schemmel seemed to imply), but a combination of the voice, and the character.

Okay, so I'm bumping this somewhat-old thread because there is indeed some relevant new information. Apparently what some people were predicting will come to pass: Chris Ayers will be lowering his voice a little bit with each progressive transformation. He reveals this to be the case and gives a demonstration of the upcoming voices for Freeza's different forms (including Mecha Freeza) here:

Almost the end, at about 11:15.

4th form and mecha go back to being higher, and the 3rd form will be the same as 2nd form but pitched down so he has enough room for range is his voice. Neat stuff.

I admit that I wasn't very familiar with Chris's work before DBZ Kai (despite being more familiar with his brother Greg's work), but after seeing his performance and listening to his interviews, I'm really starting to like him. He really sounds like someone who's very dedicated to the craft of acting. He really won me over after he started talking about how he has a background in Shakespearean theater and that he loves language-heavy roles...which is perfect for Freeza. I'm not saying he now has a free pass to do whatever he wants in the role, I'm just saying that his performance has won me over enough that now I will be more inclined to check out new animes if he's in it.
