The lowdown on the old KidMark DragonBall

Post by kenisu3000 » Sat May 28, 2005 2:05 pm

I actually bought the KidMark DB DVD set a month-or-so ago, but I figured I might as well finally get around to talking about some of the things in it (censorship-wise, or the lack thereof) that shocked the tar out of me.

Just to name a few...
Some of the pee-pee jokes are KEPT IN! I'm not kidding -- in the first episode, when Goku takes a leak, they kept in the shot (of course, all the shot is is of the urine splattering on the rock, and it looks like regular water, so it's possible that they kept this for the fact that since this takes place next to a lake, it could be mistaken for lake water splashing the rock... I guess...)
Also, at the end of the episode, when Bulma wets herself of fright, the shot isn't even censored (again, this could be because it's a little not-too-certain what that shiny stuff is coming out of her skirt, but nevertheless, Bulma cries "I'm having a crisis here!" which could be referring to either wetting herself, or being stuck on the side of the cliff).
Several episodes later, when Pilaf is about to make his wish, Oolong turns into a sort of freakish bat to try and stop him, and his privates AREN'T CENSORED!!! Kind of funny when you consider what WAS censored - that is, the bow on Oolong's lucky panties (they changed it to a Shen Long symbol).
When ChiChi is being chased by that dinosaur, she uses the boomerang-axe on her helmet to chop its head off, AND THE WHOLE THING IS LEFT ENTIRELY INTACT, BLOOD AND ALL!!
When Goku is going Oozaru, in both the actual episode and the recap in the next episode, Bulma cries "OH MY G - O - D!!"

That's all I can think of for now. I've only watched it once, but if I watch it again, and come up with more shockers, I'll post them for your amusement.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Oh yes, let's not forget the scene where Pilaf farted.

Okay, I'm a bit confused now.

Who are the voice actors in this?

It's not the Ocean Group with "Saga of Goku" is it?
Where's the beef?

These are different voice actors.

They started to dub dragonball time ago but cancelled it.

Yeah, it's the old Ocean Group cast I'm talking about. I wouldn't be so shocked about all this being left in, if it were the uncut FUNi DVD. No, this is the *edited* KidMark version (meaning this stuff aired on children's television ten years ago!!), and that's why my jaw keeps hitting the floor whenever an off-color joke remains intact in these first 13 episodes.

Yeah there were some things that were kind of contradictory on the old DB dub with the dinosaur's head being cut off, yet they didn't show Yamcha konking Chi Chi over the head.

I recently rented the DVDs from Netflix, and thought their contradicting censors were totally bizarre.

Don't forget the scene where Bulma goes fishing for Oolong and uses the American Dollar for bait.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

They also left in the scene where Yamucha sees Bulma naked in the shower, even though they could've perfectly well cut that scene - it has nothing to do with the plot.

Oh, and it has the best english Oolong voice ever. We're talking actually, honest-to-god, tolerable here.

Why give a character a tolerable English voice when the Japanese one wasn't that great either? I've not heard an English voice that was actually worse sounding to me than the original...

I'd be shocked but I've had the VHS tapes for years - that particular dub of Dragonball is what made me a fan in the first place.

At any rate, yes there's plenty of stuff like that in there it was much more lax. Probably because they were showing it at 5 AM and no Soccer Mom ever watches their kids watch TV at that timeslot. However, they still couldn't be "too naughty" or the parents would hear their kids talking about it. For the level of edits, the first time I saw it I thought it was an 80s toon (ala Thundercats, Robotech and Transformers, before Anime and even still today I was quite fanatical about 80s cartoons) due to the animation and censoring matching that of what I was used to for those things. Whats even more amazing to me about this dub is that Kidmark still has release rights!

I mean really these VHS tapes were being distributed 11 years ago, how long could the deal possibly be?

Especially considering the fact that Pioneer's license already expired. I can't wait for the first 13 eps on a dual-disc (no, I'm not buying a region 4 player just to see it), plus the Legend of Shen Long (or Curse of the Blood Rubies, whatever you want to call it). But most of all, I wish FUNi would get their arses in gear and release a DVD of Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle! That show sounds damn cool (if it can be judged by the title alone) and I can't wait to see it.

I've heard of companies retaining video rights for as much as 15+ years in the past. Hopefully it's not that long in this case though eh?

Yeah, it uses the same annoying-as-hell Goku voice as in movie 3, even though DaizEX doesn't say so. All I know is that that isn't Stephanie Nadolny.

I believe they also used the voice actress who did Maron for Buruma in that movie too. It's been a while since I watched my VHS copy, but I'm pretty sure I'm remembering correctly.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Nadolny DIDN'T do Goku's voice in niether DB Movies 2 or 3, a woman by the name of Ceiyal something (have to recheck the credits of my tapes later) did. She also did some flashback sequences for Kid Goku in DBZ, mostly all of which were in the Freeza saga, and during the Android saga they actualy had Nadolny do the RR and Piccolo Daimou flashbacks, but put Ceiyal (sorry if that's the wrong speling) back for the post-Cell Games flashback when the Z senshi thought back followinbg Goku's death. Her very last voice-over that I know of was in the "Gohan's First Date" episode and was by far the strangest, for the first line of Kid Goku's dialouge Ceiyal would do the speaking, then for the last line and ADR looping for sparring Kid Chichi, Nadolny would be doing it:

Ceiyal-Goku: You know what? Gosh, isn't there anything we should be doing since this is like a date?

Chichi: Well silly, that's up to you. The boy is supposed to think up the most pleasurable thing to do, and then try and coax the girl into doing it with him.

SWITCH

Nadolny-Goku: Oh, I think I get it now, the most pleasurable thing!

It's VERY easy, at least for me, to tell the differences. In fact, Ceiyal has more of a peacful laid-back style, while Nadolny has that high pitched actionish voice that screams right and such. Personaly, I'd prefer Kara Edwards over both of them, despite she never had done Kid Goku, her Kid Goten was damn near perfect IMO.

Regaurding Bulma and Lunch in DB movie 2, they both in fact did have different VAs. I'm too lazy and obsessed about my copy to not be too over-used, if someone could, please look back at those credits. Any female name that doesn't look familar is the name of the VA whom did Bulma and Lunch, while Ceiyal of course did Kid Goku.

You're referring to Ceyli Delgadillo who did young Dende's voice, that's why Goku sounded like him there. That was also in my view, the worst Goku voice and they should've used Stephanie Nadolny.

Now this may make me sound like a person with a dirty mind, but upon hearing that phrase did anyone else think "What the hell?" or that Chi Chi was quite fast at that age?
