The video quality of Dragon Box spoil anyone else?

Is it true that FUNi's footage of Z Kai is in 16:9, So there are black bars on the left and right?

FUNimation's Z Kai Blu-rays display the show in it's original 4:3 format, with bars displayed on the left and right of the picture when played on a 16:9 TV. I can't answer if those bars are part of the actual video, but I doubt it.

You could make arguments either way for which Blu-ray is better.

If you don't mind a slight loss of quality, and the OP/ED not looking as nice, the Funimation DVD definitely has the richest colors of every release that exists. I personally go with the Funi Blu-ray as my preference video wise, although it is easy to make the argument that the Funi DVD is the best release.

After I think about it, if they in 16:9 it wouldn't list on Amazon as 1:33:1 (or something like that) and it's obvious that 4:3 footage viewed in 16:9 display without further settings will have 2 black bars on the left and right.

I think you may have some good points. But the Japanese Dragon Box is the way it is for me. I don't care what other people say about other Anime shows being " Better " and what not. I think it's special to watch it how It is. Grain is no problem for me, I think of it as Classic in a way. If you think Kai blows Dragon Boxes out of the water, then that's your opinion. I like my Original shows untouched and not tampered with.

But the Dragon Boxes were tampered with. How else would they have remastered them? You're contradicting yourself here.

The bars are indeed part of the video itself.

I know because I have ripped my Blu Ray, and the black bars are just part of the video to make the resolution 1920x1080, when the video portion is really only 1440x1080.

I dunno about u guys but black bars bother me a lot, so I stretch the video to fit the screen. It looks a little weird at first but once you adjust to it it really doesn't look that unnatural.

Sorry for the bit off-topic-ness, but would you be able to show some old vs. new comparison shots of those series? I'd love to see the differences between their restoration and DB/Z/GT's. Of course, I don't need to see them right now, just whenever you get the free time to do so

That's really not true. While the Dragon Boxes are the best looking DBZ release out there, they aren't actually how the show was "original intended" or whatever.
