I just listened to this today. He has some pretty awesome covers, and this one is no exception.

In fact, I posted a topic about him almost a year ago. (Which it looks like you posted in as well.) I was wondering when he was going to do another cover...

EDIT: *Looks at older topic again*

Well, it looks like I got that wish fulfilled. :P

I wasn't too impressed with that Makafushigi Adventure video, but the CHA-LA HEAD CHA-LA one on his channel was pretty impressive. In the first one it felt like he was trying to overcompensate for the fact that the song isn't that hard to play by showing off with unnecessarily sliding his hand around and using some pretty irritating pinch harmonics--not to mention subsequently getting sloppy in a few parts. That's not to say he's bad, he's still pretty damn good, but things just felt off to me in that video. I dunno, maybe CHA-LA HEAD CHA-LA just lends itself to showing off more. :P

Couldn't seem to find the Chala-Head-Chala video on his channel that you were talking about.

But whilst we are on the subject about Chala-Head-Chala:

His most impressive technical playing is in the solo section of We Gotta Power at about 2:15.

The sweep riff at 2:45 is definitely the hardest riff. The backwards tapping thing is pretty cool too.

I liked the pinch harmonics in the original vid posted in this thread :)

Yeah, that solo kicks ass. Kinda makes me wonder why he sort of skipped over the end of the breakdown in the Makafushigi one.

Also, I think I've figured out what bugs me about the sliding; when it comes to music, I'm primarily a vocalist, and this guy is of course playing a vocal melody on guitar for much of the songs. As such, when he slides down at the end of a sentence, that sounds unnatural to me because a vocalist wouldn't sing it that way; when it comes to short notes, or in preparation for a following sentence starting at the same note, that's not a natural thing to do. Take the verses in WE GOTTA POWER, for example; in the verse, every sentence ends with two short notes. This guitarist slides down there, even though he barely has a fraction of a second to get back up there. You'll notice Hironobu Kageyama just stays at the same note in the original performance. Ironically, in one place where the guitarist could've put a lot of vibrato and sliding (the long drawn-out notes in the pre-chorus), he instead makes up his own fills. :P

Re-reading all that, I'm not sure whether it's a good thing that I ended up making this mostly pointless analysis between vocal phrasing and the guitar equivalent instead of simply typing something like "Something just bugs me." :P

Sliding down at the end of a phrase is like a knee jerk level reaction for me when playing high gain leads. I probably would have done the same thing just by instinct. Guitar leads often sound kinda awkward if you don't put a tail on an "ending" note with a rest after it.

Haha here's a good example from my own playing.

Notice when ever I stop, whoop, there it is, slide down... XD

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
