Piccolo and the Peach-Boy

Post by Herms » Thu Jun 09, 2005 4:27 pm

In DragonBall, there is an episode right after the climatic battle with Piccolo Daimao where Piccolo’s egg is found by an elderly couple. I always thought that this was a rather funny scene, if for no other reason then the baby Piccolo ends up burning their house down. However, the other day I realized that this scene is a parody of the Japanese fable Momotaro, the boy born from a peach.

At least, I’m pretty sure it is. In the story, Momotaro is born from a large peach which floats down a river and is found by an elderly couple who have no children. Piccolo’s egg is found in an identical manner. Here’s a summary of the story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momotaro

Did anyone else realize this? I thought it was a neat little detail. Are there any other little references to Asian myth in DragonBall (other than Journey to the West, of course)?

I haven´t really been keeping an eye out for references in DB but I´m sure there are some more.

I didn't think of it, but now that you mention it, it makes sense. Does anyone in Dragon Ball resemble Bimbogami, I wonder?

I really wished they would have referenced Yamatano Orochi somewhere in DB.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

Oh, the Peach Boy story. I haven't heard about that since I was in 5th or 6th grade. Because it was so long ago, I never would have put it and DB together.

Yes, I am familiar with the story of Momotaro. It's one of the first things my Nihongo Sensei had us translate back in the day.
Years later, when I first saw that scene with Piccolo's egg, something in the back of my mind said "there's something familiar about all this..."
Thanks for bringing that to the forefront of my memory.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

There was a reference to the story in Neko Majin Z, correct?

Goku rescuing Umigame and returning him to the sea is clearly a reference to the Urashima Taro story (Bulma even makes an in-joke about it).

Yup. =D When Vegeta's pod appears.

And Momotaro has been spoofed plenty of times in the history of anime. XD
