In a screenshot of the SNES game Hyper Dimension, I saw someone who I thought was Yamcha. I got all excited 'cause I hadn't seen Yamcha playable in any game at the time. Then it turned out to be Gohan. Not that that's a bad thing, I just like playing as Yamcha and Tenshinhan.

I too thought that Gohan was in fact Yamcha. But I always wondered why he didn't have his scars.
When I first *ahem* downloaded *ahem* Hyper Dimension as a 14 year old, I didn't have a clue about much of the story of the Buu Arc.
For one, I didn't know who Gotenks was, and I guessed that he was a new character who had nothing to do with the main cast. I thought "wow, another Super Saiya-jin?". I didn't know much why he had his hair like that so I guessed that he had long hair in base.
And then, I got kind of a shock when Goku made his finisher, and became a SSJ3 "just like that kid". So then I guessed that it was another SSJ transformation.

I didn't know much of Buu, so I just guessed that he was a new character, but I couldn't for the world understand why there were three of them (two playable, one at the character select screen), and I didn't know why Kid Buu became muscular before the fight started, just to revert into his small size.
So I thought that the three of them were entirely separate characters.

But after playing the horribly translated story mode, I started to understand what had happened, but everything didn't fall into place until I read the Buu Arc in the manga.

I must have had a boat load of faith in the dub when I first got into the series because I used to think that "Tenkaichi Budokai" actually directly translated to "World Martial Arts Tournament".

I remember that because while hanging out in English class (maybe...sophomore year?) during some down time, me and a couple other guys were looking at a gaming magazine and there was an ad for the first Budokai game. Someone made some crack about it being stupid or weird or whatever. So, I chime in and explain that it probably means "Tournament" because "in Japanese the World Martial Arts Tournament is called the Tenkaichi Budokai".

I think everyone who played Final Bout for the first time (including myself) also thought Gohan was Yamcha.

Somehow, both my dad and I-think-seven-or-maybe-eight-at-the-time sister immediately recognized Ultimate Gohan as Gohan and not Yamcha, despite this being well before that part of the series aired on Toonami.

I've heard someone refer to Freeza as a "she"... so I think they assumed he was a woman do to his FUNimation voice.

One of my younger nephews did for sure. He was maybe 6 or 7 at the time and me and some of my nephews were playing the first Budokai and he (the youngest one I mentioned) kept referring to him as "her" or "she". I'd keep correcting him and he'd always respond, "Well it sounds like a girl!".

Most of us probably only recognized Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo. We were also probably debating if Freeza's 4th form was really Freeza.

I would say I fared a little better through the UB22 intro, but didn't recognize anyone outside of the Freeza saga.

Before I even watched DBZ I always thought that the black hair guy and the blond hair guy were just 2 different people not realizing they were both Goku. I also thought that there was only one blond guy. Naturally because I had no idea about super saiyans.

Also when Goku was at the 4th floor of Muscle Tower, I really thought he was outside with Murasaki. In my defense, I tuned into it in the middle of the episode.

When I first saw the episode where Vegeta put Goku in the isolation chamber, I honestly thought that he had always been a good guy and even friends with Goku, Krillin, and Gohan (I have seen any episodes prior) just a bit of a jerk.

Off hand, that's all I can think of right now.

I remember before I got to the Buu episodes, I saw somewhere a picture of Gohan in the Kaioshin gi, and assumed that Gohan and Kaioshin fused.

I used to think characters got way bigger after transforming (height and everything).

My friend once told me that Super Saiyan 2 was called "Ascended Saiyan" and that Super Saiyan 3 was called "Golden Saiyan".

I saw a picture of the Super Battle Collection figure of Goku and Pan, and thought, since it was spelt "Gokou" on the package, that he and Pan were descendents of Goku. I believe I pronounced it "Go-cow".

Guilty. Seriously. I believed that rumor for 2 years until the rumors about kept getting more and more ridiculous, even for Dragon Ball.

I also fall in the category of "thought older Gohan was Yamcha" as well. At least from seeing pictures of him. Once I saw his Super Battle Collection figure though, I was like "ohhhh"

Sometime after that, I saw GT Vegeta (and mexican bootlegs of his SBC figures) and thought it was Gohan in GT.

Not sure when I realized that was wrong, but I know it was also from the Super Battle Collection lol.

I think many of us here made the same mistake. I know I did. It also doesn't help when Freeza also looks like he's wearing lipstick too.
