Perfect Version of the Anime

Post by Zephyr » Tue Sep 07, 2010 1:31 am

What would you consider your perfect version of the anime? What combination of animated version (IE the original version with filler, or Kai), Musical Score, and voice actors would you use, if you could create any combination you wanted?

Personally, I'd go for Kai's animation, the Japanese score, and Funi's voice actors (after they got decent).

Completely redraw everything so that color, animation and art is consistent in all ways possible. Use the original Japanese score and voice acting. For the English, a re-dub using some of my preferred voice actors and an option to switch between the original score, Faulconer's and Johnson's. Fix all filler plot holes somehow, etc.

I'd really like an completely redone from the ground up version of dbz's anime that would be an equivalent budget-wise to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

I doubt that would happen though, Toei probably thinks it wouldn't be worth the money.

A redrawn DBZ, using the art style of the Budokai intros, the original music and voices, touched up to be cleaner perhaps, and maybe new sound effects to seem more modern. Ditch the filler and Garlic Jr. saga.

If there had to be a dub, I'd like the actors to try to mimic the original Japanese actors as possible. Kind of like Chris Rager's Mr. Satan or Christopher Ayres' Freeza... even Brian Drummond's Vegeta.

And no Faulconer shit. It's superfluous.

You'd think with the budget it has, it wouldn't suck so bad.

I must be the only one that isn't too keen on using this neo art/animation style for an entire series. It just doesn't *look* like DB to me. I mean, yeah, I'll admit that I drooled over it when Budokai 2 first dropped and everything... But in retrospect, the original anime had teams working on it that adapted the manga's art much, much better than these guys are doing nowadays. Honestly, I wouldn't be bothered a bit if the art for an entirely new series was copypasta'd straight from the original.

An anime based off of an 80s manga series shouldn't look like a high-budget, 2010 anime. Or better yet...The Boondocks.

Since we're talking the animé, I'm gonna go with the original version with colours corrected for the most notable issues. I would use a mix of voice actors from the best of Ocean and FUNimation (even though they sound similar, I would choose FUNi's Chris Rager over Ocean's Don Brown for Mr. Satan). I'd have a tough time choosing between Chris Sabat's and Brian Drummond's Vegeta as I've come to appreciate Sabat's performance more ever since his screams didn't invoke images of the Tasmanian Devil, but Brian Drummond's was the first voice I heard for Vegeta, so I guess it will always be Vegeta to me. As for Piccolo, I think I prefer Scott McNeil's interpretation and, definitely, Doc Harris as the narrator.

There's no question about it, I would choose the original score and a re-done script so inaccuracies are kept to a minimum. There will always be some deviation, so all we could hope for is such deviations would be minor.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Kai with Z's music and voices. That would be awesome.

- The complete serie with slimmed down filler in Kai coat. Yum.
- Faulconer score.
- Funi's voice actors.

Do fans of the Nathan Johnson score actually exist?

Yes, you'll see quite a bit of them in the Youtube comments for videos about his music in Z.

Overall:

- Completely reanimated
- Low filler/padding, but some of the Saiyan arc filler retained
- Shunsuke Kikuchi score (with new tracks to compliment old ones)
- Hironobu Kageyama
- Same Japanese VAs as DBZ (impossible in some cases, where VA is deceased)

English dub notes:

- Current scripting practices for Kai
- New, better Goku VA that actually suits the character
- New, better Kaio VA that isn't painful to hear
- Other than Goku and Kaio, same cast as Kai

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

As much as I doubt it'll happen, I'd love to see the entire series from start to finish reanimated from the ground up. Any unnessecary filler that either contradicts the manga or exists for episode upon episode as a way to take up time wouldn't be in it. Any voice actor who hasn't passed away should return for it as well. I'd also love a re-recorded version of the old background music for nostalgia's sake, but something new, so long as it has something that feels like Dragon Ball to me is good. Of course, this is just a far off dream that Toei shall never make a reality.

All new animation, same cast as original Z (Kai cast for a few characters, like most of Frieza's minions), Z dubs core. That's all I really need. I can deal with filler.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

So basically no Schemmel? Where do I sign the petition for this to happen?
A Dragon Ball/Urusei Yatsura crossover would be awesome.
Having Toshio Furukawa balance between Piccolo and Ataru would be hilarious.
