Before Kai Sabat's 'yelling' as Piccolo sounded like he was barfing. Now it just sounds like he can't yell without his tongue getting twisted on him.
Which I suppose is a lot more natural sounding...?

Tony Oliver was perfect for the more goofy feel of the Red Jacket series. There's no doubt about that. However him in the 1978 Movie (Mamo) didn't really fit the more serious tone of the movie. Sonny Strait is the voice that comes the closest to Yasuo Yamada's performance as Lupin. Capturing the serious and suave side of Lupin, as well as the goofball pervert side. However I do agree that overall the Geneon cast was far better than the FUNimation cast. To be honest, even though I mostly prefer the Japanese cast in Lupin, to me, Richard Epcar IS Jigen. He's the definitive Jigen voice. He gives more personality to the character, even more so than Kobayashi.penguintruth wrote:I disagree. Tony Oliver beats Sonny Strait's hands down, making him sound like he's really, really having a lot of fun and full of that smug playfulness and almost childlike pleasure with what he's doing. Strait has a decent voice, but lacks the delivery of Oliver.
Edit: Woops. Sorry Mike. I'm a big Lupin nerd, I couldn't help it, lol. You won't here anything Lupin from me again.
That's exactly how I feel. To me his performance suffers now. While he's a great actor when Piccolo's just talking, his yells leave something to be desired. People keep saying how the gruffness is so unnatural. But I'm sorry, we're talking about a (Former) Demon Alien in a series for children here. Last time I checked, people don't really sound like Masako Nozawa's Goku. But it works in the sense of a children's series. Same for Sabat's gruff Piccolo voice.JulieYBM wrote:Now it just sounds like he can't yell without his tongue getting twisted on him.

Isn't there some sort of weekend airing of DB Kai coming up? I'd hate to miss premieres.

Damn it. I just know I'm going to miss those somehow. Got to remember to get them on the DVR.

Wow. Just watched the scene of Vegeta's Saiyan Blood-prefaced rampage, and I have to say this. If only out of a defensive knee-jerk to how many Funimation fans would immediately badmouth the Ocean cast dub voice actors, and go on about how Sabat is the best, I used to think I would never have anything good to say about Chris Sabat. But, in recent years, I've really been enjoying some of his roles, like Armstrong in Brotherhood, Kasanoda in Ouran, even Zoro in One Piece. But I always did think to myself "Well, I'll eat my hat if the day comes that I have anything to say about his Vegeta..."
Well, I never thought the day would come that I could use this picture again, but... ... And just for dessert...
Honestly, I really, really liked Sabat's Vegeta in this episode. It really felt desperate, to me, and I could hear his voice perhaps not cracking but similar, which gives me hints of Horikawa, personally, but it also shows he's able to emote with his Vegeta voice, instead of just grunting, which is what I always used to think of his scenes. His screaming in this episode was top-notch for my ears.
