Episode #0233! VegettoEX, Meri, and Jeff dive into the Ano-Yo-Ichi Budokai for a "Filler Review of Awesomeness". The TV series was getting a little too close to the manga, so the second self-contained filler arc for the "DragonBall Z" TV series was given the green light. How does it hold up? All sorts of bizarre news from around the world, September's releases, and your e-mails round out the episode. Referenced sites:

Nice episode. Funny thing is, for the crap I gave you for packing up the old DBZ single releases, I traded the ones I had back in 2004 (which was what, 20 discs maybe?) into Gamestop.

...For a single Nintendo Wavebird. ;p

Also, weird thing about the Canuck-Kai version...didn't Schemmel say that he had seen the Ocean dub already hence his disparaging remarks, yet Morrow is saying casting is in progress (for Goku no less, which means they haven't dubbed anything)? I think Schemmel was BS-ing a bit.

Something I immediately recognized when you played it was that sound effect that was used for Paikuhan's attack. I don't know if it has any other prior use, but it was definitely used in DBZ episode 39. When they're exploring the mirrored spaceship, and Kuririn loses his hat, that sound effect is played briefly when you see the hat flying off into outer space. It always cracked me up for some reason.

I just finished watching the Otherworld Tournament for the first time in Japanese. The last time I saw it must seen that was in 2004 with the Ocean cast on YTV.

This short filler arc wasn't as bad as I remember it being. I did enjoy the banter between all four of the Kaio's going back and forth fighting with each other. That is one thing I enjoyed about this short filler arc was the humor that was included in it which I kind of miss in DBZ at times. The different characters were also really cool too. The guy with the bug wings kind of looked like Darth Vader to me and the music that plays when you first see the Grand Kaio's planet was very nice.

I enjoyed though the first three episodes of this short filler since they had the most humor to them. However, I did find myself getting bored once the tournament fighting was beginning. I think if this filler would have been one or two episodes longer it would have been to long for my taste. Overall, though it was entertaining but I doubt I will watch it again.

On a side note the music that played when Paikuhan did his attack reminded me of music that would play on my old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle VHS when the f.h.e. company logo would show up before the episodes began.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I do agree with you guys that this filler was well placed in the series. It was a perfect place to put a break in the series between the seven year time gap.

Unless I'm mistaken, you're referring to the f.h.e. (Family Home Entertainment) logo.

Yeah, that was the logo I was referring to but I forgot the name of the company, thanks.

That's where I heard it before, then! Yeah, it certainly seemed familiar, but I couldn't place it. It's not exactly something that they use a whole lot.

Nice podcast.

The only thing that stood out in this saga was Paikuhan's attack, just how funny it looks.

Its the slow-mo snake dance!!

So when Goku figured out his weakness I thought he was talking about the obvious slow dancing. But no he was talking about an ever more obvious moment in his attack after the dance.

I actually think it would have been a very good turn if Goku DID think his dance was the weakness....just to show what Paikuhan would do if somebody wouldn't have the patience to watch him dance.

And it would be a plus for Goku, using common sence in a fight. Better yet I believe the one who killed Paikuhan actually did.

Having only seen the dub with the Faulconer score, I freaked a little when the Thunder Flash synth was mentioned, since a similar part of Paikuhan's dub theme was used every time he powered it up in the FUNi version...
The original sound seems more mystical and spacious, whereas the FUNi one (I think Scott Morgan did this bit?) seems to be going for dramatic tension (I ... totally realize how ironic it is that I refer to dub music with those words... XD ).

Neah, this episode just managed to remind me how much I like that specific song (Paikuhan's "Faulconer productions" theme). Kinda fits with "Heroic Trunks" as "very different from the original score, but not the ridiculous crap that Bary(SP?) Watson tried to shove at us".
But... I suppose I've spent enough time on that aspect. ;)

Well, this time I'd have to say I'm in the same boat as you guys, I haven't seen it in quite a while. I did see it more recently than the last time you saw it Mike, before watching it for this podcast. Although I do still have my VHS of the Funi dub. I admit I did like this little arc. What I liked most was seeing more of the afterlife being explored. Showing the other Kaio, showing interactions with other dead people who got to keep their bodies, and showing that even in after life there's chefs who make feasts for Goku to wolf down. :D I still find it funny that he gets hungry even though he's dead. I did like some of the characters as well. Paikuhan was fun to me because I used to all kinds of speculation as to why he looked like Piccolo with my friends. Olive was also fun for the same reason, I remember speculating about humans from the past and whether much more of them knew how to control their ki like that before and if they did what made them forget.

Oh, and as a little kid watching the funimation dub seeing the super kaio ken made me squee.

The last time I watched any episodes of the Ano-Yo-Ichi Budokai was from my old Funi dub tapes.

I *may* have seen the episodes from the Remastered sets, but I honestly don't remember.

So with the Filler Arc of Awesomeness out of the way, I'm now wondering about something for the next Manga Review of Awesomeness. Are you going to cover/show Jeff the anime version of the Great Saiyaman stuff? Most of the time (for obvious reasons) you don't bother with the filler, but this is probably the most significant change between the two versions (and I have to admit I think the anime handled it a lot better), so I just wondered if you would end up devoting some time to mention that.

Am I being slow here, in the fact that I only just realised, with "Tolbi" or however Mr. Simmons would have spelt it, would be a pun on "Beetle". I'm assuming Tolbi is the guy with bug wings like Cell? In which case, I'd probably spell it "Tolebee" or something.

When you talk about Paikuhan giving Goku a weird look when he mentions Piccolo, it may be because he fused with Kami and Paikuhan might know his as a god, or the fact his name means demon or devil. I haven't examined the source, but the idea came to mind.
