EDIT: Chirs Ayres says toward the end that video that for the CW4kids version of Kai, to change the dialogue they hired voice matchers to re do the lines in New York.

But all this is waaaaay off point. I think we can all agree that, whether or not we personally find Mr. Popo offensive, or whether or not he even should be, 4Kids has every right to be nervous about featuring him on their block.

See, that's the thing I find so odd about this. Yes, I can in general see why they do, but at the same time I can't just because of precedent. (And personally I feel the whole political correctness thing should die down and (in a lot, certainly not all) people just need to learn not to be so quick to take offense at everything, but that's getting off track) The dub in '96, which was made amidst a lot of the examples of FCC children's television wackiness you previously mentioned, had no problem with this. Ever. And that dub had a solid reputation for going above and beyond FCC mandates for censorship. Sure that was nearly fifteen years ago, but... I do seem to recall what the world was like in 1996, and it certainly wasn't much different than it is today. We weren't a bunch of backwards, racist neanderthals, and I don't consider us substantially more enlightened or racially tolerant now. And it gets even more confusing to me when its contemporary, Nicktoons, seems to also have no problem with Popo. Yes, they are a cable channel and not under the thumb of the FCC (although has there been any confirmation that the blue Popo was actually mandated by the FCC and not just mandated by the network for fear of offending somebody?), but they are still targeting the exact same audience, these same impressionable children with the same reactionary parents, in the exact same day and age, yet there have been no scathing articles in Time magazine about Nicktoons promoting racist caricatures. People seem to generally be cool with it, and the world hasn't ended. If there had been a huge backlash, and this broadcast version was trying to avoid the same pitfall, then I'd understand, even though I still wouldn't agree with it. That's why it continues to boggle me, not because of the likely possibility that someone promoting this show might feel uneasy about the possibility of offending someone.

So weird. Especailly since CW is the new WB which aired the Ocean dubbed version of DBZ and used the same model for Mr. Popo years ago.

This is ridiculous, but at the same time I get it. This is why I choose to wait for the releases and just watch those as they come out. I can't picture myself being tainted by these ridiculously edited episodes. I imagine it doesn't matter for kids though and new fans is better than none at all. At least this is keeping us in tune with other fans.

Different times, different audiences. A lot can change in what's tolerated over the span of a decade. And, this being particular to 4Kids, I'm going to go ahead and venture a guess that it might also be because it's airing in a post-Jynx era.
