Wow, those shots look beautiful. And some people say episode 129 looks crappy...

It actually is pretty crappy looking. The character designs are excellent, but the facial expression are horribly drawn.

I dunno... I think they look kinda cool actually, for the most part, like that shot of Goku screaming in pain with 19 absorbing his energy. It looks quite intense. The actual animation of the expressions does look a bit wonky at times though.

I never noticed that his widow's peak was mis-colored like his skin in that shot! Maybe because it's been about a decade since I last saw this episode in full screen, and that the cropping on the season sets made it less noticeable.

All of the caps above that Android 19 screencap are from episode 130, not 129.

EDIT: I misread your post. The Vegeta screencap was unrelated to the stuff about the facial expressions

Yeah, I just felt like pointing out that coloring error I just noticed after 10 years.

Yeah, it just seems as though my eyes are less drawn to it because of the cropping. At least to me. I guess it's because the very widest part is cut off, so it seems to draw less attention. Perhaps I did indeed notice it, but just forgot it since it was so minor?

I gotta say though, at first I was a bit worried that you were saying the Goku shot I mentioned was from 130, in which case that would have meant that the episode where Goku starts fighting 19 was episode 129 (when it's actually 128), in which case I'd have agreed that it looked terrible (and considering who animated it...). There were plenty of coloring errors in that one (such as Goku's hair constantly changing from the shaded color to the brighter color). Episode 128 did have a couple of good shots, and they were reused to a ridiculous amount as well.

If it isn't an inconvenience, how about some shots from episode 128? I wanna see this shot in Dragon Box quality (it's right after he tries to fire a second Kamehameha against 19, but fails or cancels it):

Many people keep saying that the Japanese Dragon Box picture look superior, but after looking at some comparisons, all I notice is that the Japanese picture is a bit darker and it is zoom in downwards(theres a bit more picture at the bottom than the top): The American picture is a bit brighter and it is zoom in upward( a bit more picture on top than the bottom). With those results, I can't consider the Japanese version superior, so it all depends on the individual: if he/she likes darker or brighter picture. Just because something is Japanese means that its better.

Actually, never mind. I believe BulmaFan was referring to the US and JP Dragon Boxes...

Well, I'd say it's superior, but only by a hair or so, just due to the slightly sharper lines and finer grain. It means absolutely nothing to me though, and the US colors appear on a US TV the way the Japanese colors appear on the Japanese TV, so I wouldn't even say the "darker/brighter" comparison is even a valid one.

Thanks for the screenshots, jjgp1112! :)

The Japanese Dragon Boxes do look slightly better than the FUNi-boxes, due to the deeper black levels, but it's barely worth mentioning; they both look great. To say the season sets are ugly would be an understatement. :?

Well, the are, just by a hair though. It'd be a bit silly to expect the more compressed US footage to look identical 100%, so given what they had to work with, I'd say the US sets are as good as possible considering how much stuff is on them.

The dragon boxs are far superior to the season sets, simple as that.

Mine arrives today, but I'll be at work so can't enjoy it.

Your right, most of the time it does. As far as the "darker" vs "lighter" I'm going to say darker because it brings out more of the color (Imo). Both sets are very fine though, it really doesn't matter.

The reason I prefer JP is this.

http://www.daizex.com/general/reviews/d ... bz_1.shtml

Scroll down to where Goku is holding nappa over his head. "R1" is what your looking at until you move your mouse on the picture, then it changes to "R2"
I gotta say I prefer the American version to the Japanese, not just because of the brightness but just look at how much more picture there is on the vertical edges.

If the brightness difference is do to the difference in US and JP NTSC standards, shouldn't it be a non-issue if you have a properly calibrated TV set? Anyone know more about that?

The JP Dbox has much more sharper looking lines, which helps it look more fluid in motion. It's just "cleaner" looking overall.
