Actually, if you compare them directly to the Japanese ones, you can tell that they actually seem to have recolored them entirely. You can especially see this on Cell, where he was correctly colored on the Japanese disc, and they incorrectly colored him on the American one. That also makes me wonder why they even bothered to recolor them when they were making them look worse/less accurate...Goku100xKamehameha wrote:They brightened the images and they blurred the left side. The JP DBox is slightly sharper then the US version, and in a lot of cases very slightly. I have some Dragon Ball Z region 2 singles so I know of what I speak.jjgp1112 wrote:The JP Dbox has much more sharper looking lines, which helps it look more fluid in motion. It's just "cleaner" looking overall.

Re: Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 Discussion
Ugh, I did some of my customary spot check of the dub that I do on all the DBoxes. Now these I'd actually seen before back in 2000, but, man, does it make me remember why I finally gave up on the dub. It was just as bad as season 3!!! And Disc 20 happens to be chock full of exposition, which makes it even more painful.
Piccolo's rant when he flies off to merge with Kami was awesome in the original, stating he'd never become friends with them, that he's still a demon clansman and is using them to take over the world. I've always found that pretty deep for Dragon Ball because it's the moment Piccolo comes to terms with those feelings. He'd always been able to rationalize his actions by using that excuse, but now he realizes he can't do that anymore, and that he's going to have to trade in a bit of his individuality to someone who is the complete antithesis to everything he once stood for. So for Piccolo, he's basically playing tough one last time and keeping himself in denial until the last second. And the dub ruins all that by just being a generic, poorly-performed, "I NEED TO BE ALONE! THIS IS SOMETHING I HAVE TO DO MYSELF! DON'T TRY TO FOLLOW ME!"
And while Sabat's Piccolo did show some improvement from season 3 (in fact, wasn't this the scene that caused Mike to be called a FUNi-loving sellout back in the day?) in the scene where he's actually trying to convince Kami-sama, the latter ends up looking like a complete idiot. I remember my jaw dropping when Kami retorted with the, "You were the ones who started that fight, after which they didn't even attempt to kill you!" Watching a show like this, you just take for granted that they're supposed to be fighting, and the fact that the good guys are suddenly the aggressors was just awesome as well as giving a compelling reason why Kami-sama would be hesistant to believe things were as dire as Piccolo believed. His dub counterpart doesn't say any of that and just goes on about how patience is a virtue and, for some reason, "time is on our side."
I will give credit where credit is due. They did a very accurate job translating the whole parallel timeline thing. And even though it was stupid and not in the original, I have to admit I laughed at the truck driver Vegeta blew up ("Come on! Big trucks! Paperclips!") So even back then, they COULD do right, but watching the dub with the subtitles on, it just seems like they felt the need to cover up important character bits with just random platitudes or simply repeating themselves. You'd think with all the extra dialogue they gave characters back then, they'd have time to fit in all the important stuff while still cramming in a few random nuggets of crap too.
Speaking of which, there was a weird moment during that scene. When the camera is focusing on Kami, the dub adds an extra line for Piccolo... but it doesn't finish in time. It cuts to an over-the-shoulder shot of Kami with Piccolo standing behind him, both facing the camera, and Piccolo continues to talk while you can clearly see his mouth isn't moving. So to anyone who has the broadcast dub, I'm wondering if this is a mixing mistake they made while making the new dub track. Did they start that line too late? Or is it like that on the broadcast dub too? Oh, and if it helps, on the DBox dub track, it's Disc 20 at 1:43:41. There seems to be a long pause preceding this line, so that's what makes me think it might not have existed on the broadcast dub. Could anyone check that for me?

I'd love 3 boxes for DB and 1 for GT, that would be glorious.LeprikanGT wrote:I wouldn't mind 5 to 8 more.

I don't care how many boxes we get for the movies, 1 or 2 is fine with me.

My YouTube
Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

Re: Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 Discussion
It'd be cool if funi did the same thing with the DB boxes with the Z boxes, don't mess with the actual cover art, just put Dragon Box Vol. # and leave Son Goku on the Kinto'un alone.
As for GT, could care less. have all the singles.
Only reason I sold the Big JP(DBOXZ) boxes was really to save space.
And the DB and GT boxes really to pay bills(I need a house more than a dvd box)

Re: Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 Discussion
That's the oddest part about FUNi's writing. I can think of a couple of scenes where I think their rewrites actually add drama to what was originally ordinary dialogue. Goku trying to convince Vegeta to fuse, for instance. But, ironically, whenever there already was a "Woah!" moment like Kami pointing out the good guys were the aggressors, they replace it with something more generic. It doesn't make much sense to me. If you're going to infuse some kick ass dialogue where there wasn't any originally, why scrub the script of everything already kick ass?Gaffer Tape wrote:So even back then, they COULD do right, but watching the dub with the subtitles on, it just seems like they felt the need to cover up important character bits with just random platitudes or simply repeating themselves. That Kami scene was amazing. While watching the fight you take for granted that the heroes are doing what they're supposed to do since up until that point all we've heard was how awful these androids are. Then later on Kami throws that in your face and you realize, "Shit...he's right."

Can anyone take a picture of the back of the Dragon Book?
Re: Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 Discussion
See.. great Gaffer.
You just wanna ruin my memories of that Arc dubbed?
I dunno, I'm curious how it holds up against my nostalgia, mainly because the Artificial Human/Cell Arcs are my favorite in Z.
Ah well, I'll get to hear this Wakamoto guy.

No. Check the Rightstuff listing of box 4. It said that it includes credit less songs.obiwan23s wrote:I believe what happened was when DBox 4 was added to online retailer sites, the running time was longer than the first three boxes, prompting people to speculate it may include some kind of extras. But it was never confirmed by FUNimation to have extras so that's probably why it doesn't.
