What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?

GT, Evolution, AND Online are all things that can be easily ignored.
Filler/Padding, the plethora of SSJs (especially Broly), and horrible dubs like Funimation's old one actually contribute to the negative stereotypes of the series.

It was the 80s. ALMOST EVERY Shonen Jump series was animated by Toei at the time, it was like a tradition.B wrote:Toei, of all animation studios, being given the greenlight to animate the series.
As for the worst thing ever happening to Dragon Ball? Easily Dragon Ball Evolution, I'd take Dragon Ball GT over that piece of garbage movie any day.
Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
The filler episodes--Gohan "training"/surviving, Princess Snake, Fake Namek, Etc, Etc--I like quite a lot.
Filler that forces something that could have taken one or two episodes to take five to twelve, on the other hand...
Well, impressive, but still... quite... horrible. T.T
Really, when I first read the title to this topic, the first response that came to mind was "the FUNimation dub".
Sure, that's how I watched it and all. But gah, look at the havoc in the community that can be traced directly to that dub...

Going beyond the Freeza saga and therefore having to introduce more Super Saiyans.
I enjoyed post Freeza saga Dragon Ball, it's just I can't hold the series in too high of regards for that.

Japanese GT is much more enjoyable.
All the "Fillers" are so cool, I don't know what's with all the hate. It sure beats Trunks in Kai slicing up Freeza and blasting him in 0.5 seconds. I know it's from the Manga, but that's why they put it on a show, to make it last longer.

It's the best part of the show, yet "they" decide to make it shorter. It went by faster than you can say Freeza. BUT they made up for it....they left in Supernova. Which is now canon....forever.

I think people are taking this Blue Popo thing a bit too far. Sure, it's outrageous, and kinda rage-inducing in that even in this day in age we're still overcensoring (and baffling when you consider that not even Saban went to that level), but do you really think this has an impact on the fandom or truly ruins the series? Dragonball/Z/Kai is about a monkey-tailed boy who grew up to be the hero of the Earth, but now realizes that the universe holds beings stronger still, and he has to fight and get stronger to protect the people and planet he loves (and also because fighting strong guys is fun...hm, maybe I put these two in the wrong order). He makes friends out of rivals and eventually this little band of superfighters is defending the Earth and the universe at large from all manner of incredibly evil and powerful villains.Jaetinh wrote:2. Blue Mr. Popo
At the end of the day, when people think of Dragonball/Z/Kai, they'll think of Gokou kicking the shit out of alien lizards and giant mutant bugs - not a blue genie living with God who gets about 10 seconds of screentime tops after the first story arc.
It's not that big of a deal. It's not going to send the fanbase into spiraling chaos. It doesn't change everything we know and love to be Dragonball (though give it time, I'm more than certain CW will see to that eventually, I just don't believe this right here is it). It is most certainly not the worst thing to happen to Dragonball.
So Popo gets to be the genie from Aladdin in one production out of 20 billion of this series that's been accumulating fans around the world for 20 years. Let's get over it already.
Fucking this. You, good sir, said in two words (er, one name) what it took me a wall of text to say a few pages back.penguintruth wrote:Barry Watson.

Based on the topic you made explicitly addressing this, I'd say you do. People hate tedious cartoons.AnimeMaakuo wrote:All the "Fillers" are so cool, I don't know what's with all the hate.

I got all that, but "It's my preference" doesn't equate to "It's good."

Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
Separate filler episodes are not the problem. Lots of people here really enjoy things like Gohan and Mr. Robot, Goku and Piccolo in driving school, Gohan's extended Great Saiyaman adventures, and stuff like that. Even some things like fights being mixed up a bit. Myself included. I love the SSj2 "warm up" portion to Goku and Kid Boo's fight, for example. And most people are glad that Goku vs Majin Vegeta was lengthened a bit, because many feel it was too short in the manga, and didn't get the attention it deserved. Those sort of things can be fun.
The bad stuff is when it's already a part of the main story, but is dragged out for SOOOOOOOOOOO incredibly long that it becomes tedious. Like how much longer Goku vs Freeza is in the anime compared to the manga. There's nothing extra there. It's all the same stuff, but extended to extremes. And that's boring. It's good that Kai is removing that sort of thing, and making things short again where they're supposed to be.

The problem with saying the filler "develops Gohan's character" is that it doesn't. As soon as the Saiyans land and the show goes back to the manga's events, Gohan reverts to the cowardly little bitch he was before the filler, because the filler has no effect on anything.

Well, there's a big difference between training for something and the actual thing. Even the veteran warriors were scared out of their minds. That Gohan even remained, that he returned to help his father, was proof that he developed.Rocketman wrote:The problem with saying the filler "develops Gohan's character" is that it doesn't. VERY good point.
That is the main reason I enjoy reading the original stuff rather than watching it.

My name is Zep, as in Hindle. If you call me Keamy instead, it's Kay-mee, not Kee-mee, there is a difference. And dammit Serp, my name is not spelled "Kreamy".

Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
Yeah, I've never seen this as a plot hole. He definitely did develop, and it's no more of a plot hole than it was in the manga. Originally he was a crybaby who couldn't fend for himself, couldn't fight, couldn't be away from his parents' knees. After a year of living in the wilderness he was certainly different, more mature, more independent, a capable fighter. That doesn't change the fact that he's five years old in his first real battle, witnessing all the adults around him getting dismembered and killed. There's a difference between able to survive on one's own and being thrust into war. And again, it's no different in the manga except that we don't see how he changed, but we still see that he has. It just cuts from him being the crybaby, to him being adept at living off the land and being able to spar with Piccolo. So if you think it's an inconsistency, blame Toriyama, not the filler.penguintruth wrote:Well, there's a big difference between training for something and the actual thing.
