To rationalize a bit, I don't think the guy was shot in an instant-kill place, he probably would be able to live for a short while, and maybe talk.

Yes, but they added a line to sugar-coat, meaning Viz is UNNECCESARILY TAMPERING with the manga material, like they do oh-so-often nowadays...which is BAD.

Gee, what a cheerful first post...

I was really curious to see what they did with the bank shooting, and they did and didn't do stuff. I don't think anything was censored, but they added a stupid "Aaaah! It hurts!" line to the guy who got shot. And Satan City is now "Herculetopia".
The "it hurts" line was there in the original. He also cries for his mommy. :P

But yeah, the Hercule stuff is pretty damn stupid.

"Herculetopia"?!? WTF? I have to say that I prefer The video games's "Hercule City"... Actually, it's quite amusing in Budokai 3 when you go to "Hercule City" that while all the actual dialogue says "Hercule City" that there's a huge sign that reads "Satan City" in the background... XD

I agree it is annoying that Viz is censoring their manga in general. Heck, I heard the advanced line is censored as badly as the SJ line, even though it's intended for more mature readers. I kinda wished they'd censor the SJ version and keep the graphic novels pretty much uncensored. I mean do more kids read the graphic novels instead of SJ?

That or I think Viz should give Soccor Moms the finger and publish the manga uncensored, pointing out the manga isn't always uitable for five year old Billy.

I also agree that Hercule City would have been better than the rubbish they're using (though Satan City would have been perfect, but that's asking to much of Viz).

Yeah, he just makes noises originally, but I doubt they were trying to sugar coat it. They just wanted him to talk I guess >_>

I think he was just groaning in pain in the original, where they put the "it hurts" line.

And there you go. While it's not quite saying "it hurts," he is clearly expressing his pain verbally. "Ide," derived from "itai," would have to be something like "ouch," though I suppose something that's almost a word would work as well.

Blastero wrote:Ah. Well I guess that's kind of in the middle. I am suprised they kept the shooting in at all since just a few chapters ago a gun to the head was removed. Maybe this is more classified as action violence? I still think there's no way the 2 elderly people getting sniped in the head is going to go untouched.
I think they also get more leeway with things that are direct-to-graphic-novel, whereas things in the magazine have to be edited down, even if the rating would otherwise allow it (cf. toned-down language in T-rated titles like Naruto and One Piece). :?

No doubt about it, the Saint Seiya manga (Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya as Viz calls it) has a T rating but not a single art edit in it, this despite the fact that volume 3 has the most violent scene I've ever witnessed in anything.

Also while smoking and such seems to be often edited in the actual Jump Magazine itself (with the T rating) it's not edited in the A for All Ages rated Beet the Vandel Buster (Current favorite manga series BTW).

This is 2005, someone else needed to buy the contract for the manga.

Regarding Beet, Volume 4 of the graphic novels has both a human and a huge whale getting their brains blown out in graphic scenes, and it's still rated "A" for all ages. WTF?

DBZ had the A rating keeping its violence intact, including Android 20 ripping that guy's head off.
