That's what gets me about Viz... Some of their censorship seems to have no rhyme nor reason... Sometimes it happens, others it doesn't.Blastero wrote:What really confuses me with VIZ is why sometimes things are censored in the magazine and uncensored in the GN, and sometimes they are censored in both. For example, in YYH Shizuru's cig was censored in one chapter in the mag, but it was left in in the GN, but in DBZ, all of the flicking off etc. is erased in both the GN and magazine.I think they also get more leeway with things that are direct-to-graphic-novel, whereas things in the magazine have to be edited down, even if the rating would otherwise allow it
Censorship in new Dragonball Z manga Volumes.
Really? I have to admit that I am glad to see that sometimes the GN are uncensored when the SJ version is censored. If the GN were always uncensored and SJ censored then I wouldn't mind the censorship to much.Blastero wrote:What really confuses me with VIZ is why sometimes things are censored in the magazine and uncensored in the GN, and sometimes they are censored in both. I think the reason behind the censorship in "I''s" was because the girl was like 13-14 years old, whereas Bulma was 16. Probably because of her age most likely. Also I've read a few articles that mentioned people in the States criticizing various mangas for having "little lolitas" in them.Blastero wrote:Unfortunately, SJ is too lazy to put all the swears back in the GN. I'm not sure how true this is, but I even heard in Yugioh, the word goddamn was used in issue 2 or something, and was censored to plain damn in the novel. And SJ uses their stupid little A for all ages raing as an excuse to censor swears and middle fingers etc. in Dragonball Z, but I don't even know why they would have given it an A rating in the first place. Its just as violent as anything else with a T rating. And let's not forget the fact that the T rated Dragonball got away with naked boobs, (on multiple occasions!) while the T+ rated I''s gets them censored.

Hm, still, Bulma was under age. I in fact have a copy of the Baba arc graphic novel, Viz left it totally untouched!:Super Sonic wrote:I think the reason behind the censorship in "I''s" was because the girl was like 13-14 years old, whereas Bulma was 16. And well, there's nothing wrong with it really, the average american is just an incredibly purist.

I just bought it too. It's "Hercupolis".Blastero wrote:I was at Waldenbooks the other day, and picked up the newest DBZ novel(didn't buy it, just skimmed it) from SJ to see what they did with certain things, and I actually had mixed feelings about the censorship. I was really curious to see what they did with the bank shooting, and they did and didn't do stuff. I don't think anything was censored, but they added a stupid "Aaaah! It hurts!" line to the guy who got shot. And Satan City is now "Herculetopia".

Don't know why you had to say it like that, but why bother rating it "A" then?VegettoEX wrote:They don't touch the stuff that no-one buys.Mizugi wrote:Regarding Beet, Volume 4 of the graphic novels has both a human and a huge whale getting their brains blown out in graphic scenes, and it's still rated "A" for all ages. Well, it's true. I have nothing against Beet (in fact, the very notion of Ryusei Nakao playing an evil rabbit makes me giddy with delight), but the fact remains that they just leave alone the stuff that's NOT the mainstream, massive-volume purchases. No-one reads it, no-one notices this stuff, no-one cares.Mizugi wrote:Don't know why you had to say it like thatVegettoEX wrote:They don't touch the stuff that no-one buys.Mizugi wrote:Regarding Beet, Volume 4 of the graphic novels has both a human and a huge whale getting their brains blown out in graphic scenes, and it's still rated "A" for all ages. No-one except us, and we're in the asininely small minority.

Funny.Since the censoring started up again, I've simply picked up my volumes at the local used bookstore. That sticks it to Viz just as much as not buying it.
A lot of people do that though, and don't realize the implications of it. [i.e. the loss of profit.] Which happens with any materials you can buy used. Though in many cases it's due-ly deserved.
I am disheartened by the censorship, especally when some of it isn't really necessary (in my eyes anyway). a lot of it is rathed T so why make it suitable for all ages? It's also disheartening because originally Viz said manga would be un-cut.
However I do like reading the graphic novels in my hands and because I can't speak Japanese, I can't import the Japanese versions and read those instead. Scanlations are alright but I prefere to read them in book form anywhere I want rather than being stuck at my computer. Frankly I can deal with little to no swearing in the books as long as the words are pretty much the same and the original names are used. I will not be happy if Hao is called Zeke.
Sure, Viz are going back on what they originally said but for me it's either than or nothing. And frankly I don't want nothing, so I'll settle for second best.

Watch Viz end up pulling a FUNi and 4-Kids on us and end up releasing "Ultimate Uncut" Graphic Novels. I feel sorry for the people that may actually get those if Viz does that idea, and watch it be just for the money to them. They, like a couple other companies I don't feel like mentioning, could care less about the true fans.
