Tao Pai Pai Appreciaton Thread

Okay, okay.

So there's a scene in Dragon Ball episode 61 which I like to refer to as "Tao's Big Day." During a stroll around town, he flips up a shoe to bounce an assassin's bullet back at him without breaking stride. He then returns to his hotel and asks for nothing but a single, uncooked egg. He gets back to his room, draws a bath, and brings the water to a boil with his ki while he sits in it. He then sets a timer for twelve minutes and holds the egg underwater until it's hard-boiled, at which point he cracks it open on his forehead to eat it. I hold this five-minute segment as the greatest in all three series.

Besides that, Tao Pai Pai is a great and wonderful assassin, normally charging ten billion zeni for his services, although for his twentieth anniversary sale, he only charges five billion, practically a steal! The kindly Tao Pai Pai even offers free kills for tailoring services! In the great turmoil of the Cell Games, he was even generous enough to challenge his former arch-enemy to a game of puzzle-solving and wits, happily parting with his Dragon Ball upon being defeated. Truly, an amazing man. Agree or agree?

Isn't he a quasi-immortal sennin like Roshi and Crane? I could have sworn his birth date is a few hundred years before Dragon Ball starts, or something.

Yeah. Even stranger is that his parents are apparently the same way, because, if I remember correctly, Tsuru-Sennin was born about 40 years earlier. Does it run in the family or something? :?

Is he? It wouldn't surprise me; he can do pretty much anything he wants. I don't ever remember it being mentioned in the series though. Although I suppose the fact that he's Tsuru Sennin's what -- brother? -- would raise a few eyebrows otherwise.

For real though, one of my favorite villains in the series. Practically every moment he's on the page/screen is absolutely hilarious.

The man's main form of transportation is a pillar and has the words "kill you" on the back of his shirt. Is there really more to discuss? Tao Pai Pai is full of win.

I'm glad Toei decided to bring him back in some Z filler, it was another appearance I didn't expect. The first one being his arrival at the 23rd Tenkaichi. The first time I read through that (I read the manga for DB before I watched the anime in full) I was thoroughly surprised, I thought he was dead. Originally he was my favorite villain besides Vegeta way back when, being a badass assassin that showed Goku a thing or two.

That bit about killing that would-be assassin with his shoe was probably one of the most hillarious segments from the anime.

Here's a decent AMV dedicated to his awesomeness.

I don't understand the fandom behind Tao Pai Pai. Yeah, he was brave for challenging Goku on his own.

But he was an assassin, and probably slaughtered hundreds of innocents over his lifetime. I hear that one time he took four children captive and slowly tortured them to death by throwing razor blades at their stomachs, while laughing all the way. He recorded their painful wailing and made a mix tape which he listened to on an mp3 player made of the childrens' mother's bones. One time he sowed somebody's eyes shut and made them drive him to his dentist's office. Just when they were about to get into a crash, he hopped out and they died in a horrible, firey wreck. Then he went upstairs into his dentist's office and stabbed each person in the waiting room with his bare hand and soaked up their blood with the magazines. Needless to say, Tao Pai Pai got a lolipop that day from the dentist.

He was a terrible, terrible man.

Because he's one of the most hilarious characters in the entire series?

Seriously, go watch episode 61 until your eyes explode from all the awesome.

The funny thing is this is pretty much the over-the-top level at which the series already portrays him (again, see the shoe/egg scene). Tao's a classic gag villain, whose main joke is how ridiculously evil/skilled he is. He doesn't always drink beer, but when he does, he prefers Dos Equis.

And since I can't quite tell if you're kidding, do you honestly assume that in any realm of fiction "enjoyable" has to mean "likable"? How very un-po-mo of you.

I'm obviously joking, continuing what I did in the Bardock thread.

I like to think of them as writing exercises.

What's with all these character appreciation threads today? I swear, If I see a Shu and Mai appreciation thread, I'm eating my hat.

I actually think they're pretty funny. They're like the kinds of things I want to say whenever I meet an overzealous Vegeta fan who seems to think he's the purest thing ever.

My God man, he's an assassin for hire, not the Jigsaw killer!

I know you're joking, I just had to say that.

Coming soon, to theatres near you...

Saw VII: The Tao Pai Pai Edition

It chills me just thinking about it...

But seriously, the fact that he rides a pillar is the single most thing that makes this guy awesome. 8)

The only thing I don't like about Tao Pai Pai is that he killed one of my favorite characters, General Blue. Other than that he is awesome lol.

Tao Pai Pai is definitely awesome. It's a shame how he and a lot of other Dragon Ball characters are usually forgotten by those to whom only Dragon Ball Z matters.

The Tao Pai Pai just lightly pokes and foot-taps the pillar to break it out.... this guy was Chuck Norris before the Norris-Meme stuff started.

Few do know the fact that Tao Pai Pai is in fact a great artist. A hint of this can be shown in the scene where he draws a quick sketch for the tailor where he shows how his suit should be sewn.
The pure lines and the witty personality of his auto-portrait is actually one of the trademarks of his work, which can be found in most guidebooks that go deeply into the world's greatest artists, where he is closest compared to the great DaVinci for his attention to detail and the disturbed Van Gogh for his cruel and yet sarcastic undertones in his work.
Sometimes he is compared to Michaelangelo, where the main consensus is that his work contains divine elements, and beautiful and imaginative storytelling that shows us the personality and persona of the artist himself.
People who know Tao (or his pseudonym "Silent Cherryblossom Killer") say that painting is his main hobby, and that he has a lot of time in his hands due to his work who takes very little of his time.
His martial arts past and his gentle and yet fierce nature are showcased in his work, and people claim that his most important work "I got my guts blasted out by a monkey-tailed boy because of that I thought too high of myself" will soon trade places with DaVinci's paining "Mona Lisa" in the Louvre.
With his cybernetic enhancements, and his latest accident where he was hospitalized for months and later humiliated on the martial arts scene, he has decided to put all his remaining time on his paintings, to enlighten and educate us with the story of his life and the natural order in the nature.
