Yamcha yelling in DB ep. 6 - translation?

Post by Amiable-Akuma » Sun Oct 03, 2010 10:16 am

Hello folks, back here after a long time. Love this website/board.

(WARNING, spoilers for DB ep. 6 follow)

I have a question about the correct translation of two things that Yamcha yells in episode 6. from the original DB series. It is the ep. when he and Puaru sneak up on Goku/Bulma/Oolong as they sleep/rest in their mobile home camper at night in the desert.

As far as I know, none of the Funimation releases translate what he is yelling and I checked the manga and the yelling does not occur there to be able to find a translation.

In the first time it occurs - what he is yelling is actually physically written on the screen in kanji or some language in huge letters. But it is not translated in the subs. This occurs when he removes the covers from where Bulma is sleeping in the camper to find her nude. See this youtube clip for what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-ohU_YD ... re=related

The second time he yells and there is no translation is, several scenes later, when he is nursing his injured mouth from his fight with Goku. He is sitting in his vehicle talking to Puaru and suddenly he has a flare of pain in his mouth and he jumps up screaming something.

Now I assume the translation of the first instance is something like "Oh, my God!!!" and of the second is something like "Ouch!!!" but I definitely want to know for sure or at least with more certainty.

I've been wildly off with translations before (for ex. I was way off when I thought I knew what the kanji on the face of Yamcha's hide-out meant) and am very curious - thanks.

First of all, I wouldn't worry about spoiler tags here. :P

The first instance is just screaming. The text on the screen is just a transcription of the screaming ("Gyoee!!").

You are right about the second instance, though. It's "Iteeee!" which literally means "This is painful!" Or more simply, it just means, "Ouch!" It seems odd that they wouldn't subtitle it (I've never owned FUNi DVDs for those episodes), but in context, I guess it is obvious to anyone that he's in pain, so maybe they thought it would be redundant.

Wow. See, this is exactly what I was looking for. This is why I love this board. Perfect response that came in a very short time since my OP. Thanks a ton. :D

BTW, I've noticed a good handful of these situations where in the Funi subs they forget to include a translation - and I'm sure I'll want to ask about them in the future/soon - so I'm definitely glad ya'll are here and hope things never change.

Now, certainly I think the Funi subs are pretty good and I think they are better or as good as most other shows but there are a couple situations where they leave translations off like: 1) When there is random yelling as above when, like you said, the meaning seems obvious or redundant 2) A lot of other very short sentences like when a character just says "Hi" or "Here" or whatever 3) Most often when kanji or signs are written on-screen, it is not translated for various reasons and 4) Sometimes there is a legit over-sight or over-looking of something that could possibly be subbed - usually when a character is talking rapidly and instead of, for example, directly translating all four of the sentences the person said - they just translate three or condense it to three because the basic meaning is retained.

Okay, so most of this is common or forgivable but now that I have started to watch the show with the subtitles off (only every now and then looking at a digital script on a small device for reference) - the instances where it occurs stand out more. Of course, it also stands out more now because I am watching these episodes over again instead of for the first time. Upon a second or third viewing you tend to pay attention to different details then you did on the first.

Right, so while often it is understandable - certain occasions of the left out translation definitely will stick in my head and make me want to get the question answered right away so I will not have to think about it again in the future.

Right :) - yeah, I think I've been told that here before but I can't help it. I guess I imagine that some people may have seen either DB, Z, or GT but not all - plus, I've had things spoiled for me in the past. The ending to the first Saw movie springs to mind as well as a couple Dragon Ball-related things that I had already seen but definitely forgot. I always watch the whole series/franchise in continuity too so spoilers are on my mind more.
