Re: Is the Dragonball Kanzenban manga coming to america??
(1) Nobody knows. Viz hasn't even finished the regular edition yet, though the censorship in their current releases would certainly give them an opportunity to make money off an "Ultimate Uncut" version of sorts.SuperGotenks wrote:and is it going to be in color like the jap ones are??
(2) Nobody knows. They'd have to announce said "kanzenban" adaptation first.
(3) The word "Jap" (when capitalized) is generally considered derogatory towards those who are Japanese or of Japanese descent (Nikkei). Though that's obviously not the usage you intended, it still sounds... how should I put it... coarse? It's better to write the word in full or use "JP" as an abbreviation.

Just a follow through on this statement:SaiyaJedi wrote:(3) The word "Jap" (when capitalized) is generally considered derogatory towards those who are Japanese or of Japanese descent (Nikkei). For those of you wondering why Julian keeps correcting people like this (ie: if you feel he's making a big deal out of a simple abbreviation), it would be the same as saying "the nigger" version of this, or "the mick" version of that, or "the chink" version of it. "Jap" IS derogatory and is said way too often.

No, it wouldn't be the same thing exactly. It only looks/sounds like it.Dayspring wrote:Just a follow through on this statement:SaiyaJedi wrote:(3) The word "Jap" (when capitalized) is generally considered derogatory towards those who are Japanese or of Japanese descent (Nikkei). Alright, next time you see a Japanese person, say "Hello my Jap friend." And watch as he gets crouching tiger on your ass.No, it wouldn't be the same thing exactly. It only looks/sounds like it.
Of course it's derogatory, it's like foreigners calling Americans "Yanks", a lot of us don't too much like that one. "Yankee" (much like "Japanese") is acceptable, but the short hand is more like a racial slurr.
To you it might be harmless, but just like making racial slurrs to other people, of other nationalities/cultures, these things are highly insulting. Probably just as insulting as greeting a person incorrectly in their native language, when you have no understanding of it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is bothered by the term "Jap". It always makes me cringe when I hear people use it. And the term was very common back in the WW2 era, which of course was when Japan was our enemy. And innocent American-Japanese who had nothing to do with the war were forced into internment camps. Trust me. It's considered derogatory.

No one is saying that he intentionally said a derogatory term. But the term is considered derogatory. Julian was just informing him of this because he probably was not aware of it. I find a lot of young anime fans nowadays use it without knowing this.

And to support your claim, it's also used among the close nit circles of people who dislike anime, because they think it's dumb. It's a very ugly way to act, and an ugly term that, much like any other racial slurr is littered with a past of ignorance, anger, and resentment. People should definitely be more aware of what they say before they say it.
Just like those of Asian decent, we Americans have to deal with shit that went down before our time (enslavement, etc.) so either way you slice it, you just don't go around defacing the name of someones race just to save typing/speaking time. It's common courtesy.

Super Gotenks, seriously, read the rules: http://www.daizex.com/interaction/board , and obey them otherwise EX will have you out on your ass to be on Daiz-EX exile. Now this thread has gotten WAY off topic though, so let's get it back on before it's closed. I certainly won't be surprised if Viz ends up releasing an "Ultimate Uncut" version of the Dragonball manga (so they can get their money grubbing fingers on our wallets), if that's the case, expect the kanzenban when hover cars become the new traveling system.SuperGotenks wrote:you guys this is really off topic and if it does come to america is it going to be in color you think???

Indeed, I wish these morons that can't spell a lick-worth would just read the f***ing rules and abide by them.Sun_Wukong wrote:How hard is it to use simple grammar?

I own the Kanzenban and don't really understand the point of having them released here. I mean, weren't the only changes the new covers and the ending Toriyama changed (aside from the volumes being larger in content)?

Didn't Toriyama go back and change some of the numbers in certain parts of the story to coincide with the rest of it? I don't remember exactly which numbers; I only remember it being mentioned here.MajinVejitaXV wrote:I own the Kanzenban and don't really understand the point of having them released here. Edit: Actually, aside from the updates, I'm not sure about the purpose of the re-releases either. Atleast with manga like Sailor Moon (which was pretty recently re-releases in 14 books (12 books of the actual series, 2 with the side stories) and the Sailor V manga was also released), the original copies were hard to find and the new versions make it easier to pick up. I'm only 5 books away from finishing my collection. However, from I've heard, Shueisha is STILL releasing the old DB manga. Feel free to correct me.
Edit the Second: *fixes the number of SM books he's missing*

The advantage of them being released is that they're in a bigger format, higher quality paper, color intact, and new covers. Aside from the minor changes in content, the Kanzenban really is for collectors, not necessarily for people who just want to read and enjoy the manga. I mean, of course they're used for that, but if you've already read the manga, there isn't really a point to purchase the Kanzenbans besides for collecting. That is, if they are released here.
