A couple of questions

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

A couple of questions

Post by Sonsaiy » Tue Jul 12, 2005 1:17 pm

Whist watching the last five episodes of the Ocean DragonBall Z dub. I noticed the video quality was very poor. There had been some very obvious colour damage to the point where the episodes looked like a poor GIF file. The episode title screen was just a screenshot of a scene from the episode, the typeface used was very different from the ones seen in previous episodes and some of the script didn’t seem to gel with the characters. I have my suspicions that this may be because ocean failed to receive the masters from Funanimation, but it doesn’t seem right. Was there an extreme delay for the last five episodes in America?

Toonami UK has also stated that they will show the DB movies and GT special.
Their schedule lists these titles:

DB – Sleeping beauty in devil castle,
DB – Mystical adventure,
DBGT – Four star DragonBall is the proof of courage,
DB – Legend of Shenron .

Does anyone have any information regarding who dubbed these movies? While its quite obvious by the names that funanimation didn’t, it does not rule out Blue water (who have the rights to the DragonBall and GT television series), or Bridge (who had the rights for the DragonBall Z movies in the UK.)

Edit: I put this in the right forum, moved it to another, realised I was right the first time and moved it back.

From what I understand of the situation, the script problem is entirely FUNi's fault, but the dubbing is done by Blue Water/Ocean Group, with their own in house cast. And as far the episodes looking terrible, that has something to do with the way they encode their footage, that brings those issues.

You're right. The footage of the last Ocean episodes is from France (like Blue Water's DB and DBGT versions).

I do remember my friend downloading a French episode which did look of similar quality, Thanks.
I’m still quite stumped on who will dub these movies though; blue water will have the original music including Japanese vocals if any, tolerable voices but will censor nudity and no curses (i.e. Hell).
Bridge will keep the original music but no Japanese vocals, really awful voices, nudity and curses will be kept but there will be name changes. I just need to know if I’m setting myself up to be let down again.

Note: Bridge didn't dub the DBZ movies (with the "Big Green Dub").
I wrote an e-mail with questions about this dub and they answered that they DON'T know who dubbed this stuff! oO
First of all, thanks for the compliments!
Then about the voice actors... we really don't have a clue. The problem is, that we don't own the home video-rights for the Dragonball series and movies anymore, and that there is no contact anymore with the producers. And in the past, the mastertapes were allready dubbed when we received them. We never received any actors lists whatsoever.

We apologise for not being able to awnser your question!

Kind Regards,
Anne Bijl

By the way, was DBZ movie 1 (Garlic) released in the UK?

Thanks for the info,
and I do believe at least 3 movies where released in the UK on VHS/DVD which were:
Super Saiya Son Goku (Lord Slug,)
The Strongest Guy in the World (Dr. Wheelo ,)
Super Battle in the World (Turles,)
and up to movie 6 was shown on TV a few weeks back.

However there were no VHS/DVD releases for the other 3 that aired that week.
