Comparing the famous beam struggle between Goku and Vegeta
Between the original Z's version of the scene, and Kai's version, which do you think was better?
Reason I ask specifically about this scene is because this scene was re-animated completely in Kai to get rid of all the lighting effects.
Z's version has ridiculous lighting and flashing that actually hurts your eyes, and really lets you feel the power of the beam struggle, I think.
But at the same time, Kai's version looks beautifully clean and pristine on the Blu Ray and is really high quality since it was re-animated. But it doesn't have any lighting whatsoever, so I think it loses that effect.
Which version do you think was better?

I like the seizure-inducing* lighting. That and when I watched it in Kai, I was expecting it. The original I wasn't, so I was totally into it. Kai not so much. I didn't know it was fully reanimated though. Someone want to do some screenshot comparisons?
*I'm not sure how strobe effects work like that for some people. I think I'm just lucky. My cousin and I watched that one Pokemon episode and were sadly disappointed to not get seizures. Don't judge me =p

You can check out some comparisons in Hujio's thread
http://daizex.fanboyreview.net/viewtopi ... 16&t=11640 (Episode 14)
Though you really have to see the scene in motion to tell the difference, since screenshots can't capture the radical lighting.

Like most super-charged scenes, I enjoyed this one much more in it's original version.

What are you talking about? That's THE version of this moment in the series. Don't be ashamed!Gamma wrote:I liked the Ocean dub version the best.

I like the strobe effect; it's just how I'm used to seeing it. So I'll vote for the original Z version.
...well, I would vote if this was a poll.

I don't think we're comparing, which dub is better but which version is the best between Kai and Z.Gamma wrote:I liked the Ocean dub version the best.

Re: Comparing the famous beam struggle between Goku and Vegeta
Yeah I realized that sometime after I posted. In that case, I like the Z version much more than the Kai one. The lighting effects don't bother me at all, they actually look pretty cool.Goku100xKamehameha wrote:I don't think we're comparing, which dub is better but which version is the best between Kai and Z.Gamma wrote:I liked the Ocean dub version the best.

Make me wonder why they recolored Kaioken aura in the early episodes and left it exactly like the original later.

Most, if not all of the "big moments" in Z were in done better in Z than they're done in Kai. Goku's death in the Raditz battle, Goku versus Vegeta, Goku's first SSJ transformation, etc.
A lot of it is the soundtrack and quality of voices.

But what's your take on visuals, rather than audio?penguintruth wrote:Most, if not all of the "big moments" in Z were in done better in Z than they're done in Kai. Goku's death in the Raditz battle, Goku versus Vegeta, Goku's first SSJ transformation, etc.

I mean, take the scene you mentioned of Goku vs Vegeta. In Z, it would always cut to filler right smack in the middle of the fight to arguing going on on the island, or "I cannot believe his strength? Can he win?" about 20 times. It plays out so much more smoothly in Kai, even the beam struggle scene which this topic is about, in Z it cuts to filler right in the middle of the struggle!

Well, I like the filler bit where Lunch is in the bar and then everyone runs out of the buildings because shit is going down miles away where Vegeta is powering up. It lends credibility to Vegeta that his power is causing havoc even outside where he's fighting.
