Dragon Ball Z Volumen 1 - Spanish DVD Banter.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Tue Oct 19, 2010 11:03 pm

So recently I've been on this search to find my two favorite DragonBall Z dubs on DVD. The Spanish\Mexican dub and the Italian dub. I have yet to find any Italian DBZ DVD's, but I did manage to find a line of (non-FUNimation) Spanish DBZ DVD's. I didn't really like FUNimation's line of Spanish DVD's, they were pure shit. To name a few flaws, they didn't have Spanish title cards, they didn't have the Spanish end credits (the text was in Japanese with the Spanish Zenkai Power playing), Also the footage is taken straight from the Orange Bricks... so... yea...

Then I found this DVD...

Image

Now at first you might think it's a bootleg just like I did, but I bought it anyway, the price was right and well, the only other option I had were the FUNimation DVD's. My first hint that this might actually not be a bootleg is that it has papers for other releases, bootleg companies don't usually do this.

Image

Looking on the back of the case, there is some information. There's a website but, it really doesn't help much. If you wanna look at that information yourself, here ya go...

Image

I think I'm just going to come to the conclusion that this is probably an Argentinean release of the Spanish\Mexican dub. I've seen some Argentinean releases before and this just might be one of them. If any Spanish fans out there know what this is exactly, I'd be happy to hear it.

So with the bootleg issue explained, here is a look at the actual DVD....

The menu's consist of a main menu, episodes, and photo gallery. A photo gallery on any DVD as an extra is a shitty extra.

Now, the video quality is kinda bad. It's just like it was on TV and how I remember it, but... I... actually really like it like this. I know I shouldn't but, there is a total difference between a DVD's transfer being shitty and the actual film being in bad repair and\or showing it's age. This is how I actually remember watching it on TV. This is how it was when I was watching it in Japanese on the International channel and this is how it was on Telemundo years later.

There are these lines that are on the film that will roll across the picture or pops in sounds and it's kinda neat. I mean, I wouldn't want a whole release like this, but to have just this one DVD like this is OK with me.

Here are the lines I'm talking about...

Image

Image

I put up a clip to just show what I mean about the film quality. You can't really see the lines that well, and there is a bit of a decline in quality being it's youtube but, you can see what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0MMuseKAk4

This is what I wanted. The true Spanish dub how I remember it. With the decaying film look and the Spanish title cards and end credits...

Image

Image

Tidbit: Did you know (not counting Toei and Akira Toriyama) the Spanish end credits only credit about 6 people?!

And... that's about it. :D

I've seen this mentioned around here before. Apparently, these guys didn't release the whole series? And the video quality is actually, I don't know... It's cool that it's not the over-saturated Funimation stuff, but being a direct transfer of whatever film the Mexican TV companies had is acceptable.

Also, where the hell did you buy this? I can never seem to find these the few times I've looked.

Oh, I didn't wanna put up a link just in case this was a bootleg.

As far as I understand it's not. You could send me a PM though. :P

But yeah, aside from what Funi has put out, these might be the only official DVD release. I can't remember, and there's two or three threads about it somewhere...

Yeah, I want a link too. That DVD is amazing, the quality is not as bad as you said it was. I just wish they'd release the entire series. Which Funi DVD's are you talking about?

-3 episodes per volume.
-Trilingual.
-Only 9 volumes released.
-Old 4:3 footage.
-English track with dub music.

Image

Spanish... somethingoruthers that look like the UUEs.
-10 volumes released.
-Also 3 episodes per volume.
-Spanish only.
-Orange brick widescreen footage.

The single for Movie 5 also has the Mexican track on it. No one knows why...

Wow, I really like the cover to that DVD.

I'm almost certain these are official. I found all 5 released volumes on amazon.com. They only released up to episode 52. There are sometimes two separate listings for each volume, and a few have the actual cover art.

There are definitely bootlegs on there though. The key, is the reviews and the covers. These covers have a scheme, look very official, and have a Toei stamp on 'em. The listings that are obvious bootlegs all don't have the Toei stamp. They're all about 10 episodes a disc. The obvious fakes have like fucking 30 lol. Though, none of the official looking releases have reviews, just the bootlegs.

There doesn't seem to be any kind of official release of DB or DBGT or any of the movies (aside from the US Movie 5 of course).

Since we're gonna avoid possible bootlegging, I'm just gonna post the covers to the (hopefully) official stuff and the bootleg stuff, just to show the difference.

Official ones.

*no pics on amazon for 2 or 3

Bootlegs.
This one made me lol, Harukanaru de Dragonball Seta!

You get the idea.

Now, the website on the back of the DVD, I've been to it before when it was brought up in a thread a ways back. Before, I DID find the Dragonball Z stuff. Now, it's nothing but documentaries. I'm assuming they don't have the license for the series anymore. Probably didn't have it for long if they only got out 5 volumes.

I'd say posting the links to each volume is acceptable. But I really want to know some sort of confirmation as to what's really going on with these DVDs, and this dub in general. The volumes go for around $15-$35, though Tanooki said he got his for around $10. That specific listing is also out of stock lol, but there is another one of (possibly) the same DVD.

I want to beat people at Funimation for a proper release of the series' Mexican dub. :(

Edit!
These guys also happened to release all 5 volumes in one package. Some guy here posted pictures last year. I'm amazed they're still up. I can't find this set on Amazon.
http://daizex.fanboyreview.net/viewtopi ... 63#p295063

Someone also mentions upto Cell being released, but then posts an auction site with loads of bootlegs and some dead links. I wish I took pictures of the site before it dropped the DBZ stuff, because I could've swore it only said upto 52 or 5 volumes or something. No links to purchase anything though... And edit: Way Back machine is useless for the website. Fuck.

I believe that the artwork for Raditz and Gohan on that pic are from Kai 2010 calendar.

"Las 16 Peliculas en un solo disco"
"DVD contiene 73 capitulos"

Just wow. The quality on those must be horrific.

Yeah, there's a cover for Volumen 1 of Dragonball, and it has 80 episodes. 153 episodes on 2 DVD's ftw. :?

That one has a review:
"its was an OK copy that i got. the movie was suppose to be in Spanish, and for the most part it was . BUT it also kept changing back to Japanese. i also had the feeling this was a 'boot leg' copy. it wasnt as clear as it should have been. live and learn i guess. my husband was please so the end result was just ok."

Sounds like a mish-mash between something censored and the original Japanese lol.

I don't know if it's just Youtube, but the clips look pretty dark.

Like that part in Cha-La where the hand-nerve...things come up, then the skin goes over it and blasts, you can barely see the nerves. That or my TV was just brighter then it should've been, back in the day.

There's no telling for sure where this footage came from though... It may not be the same the TV masters.

Is there any place to get that entire box-set thing? Volumes 1-5? And how old are these boxes?

Well, the website of the distributor dropped all of their anime stuff sometime towards the beginning of the year/maybe end of last year. When these first came out or when they really dropped them, I have no idea and I really wish someone did.

As for that set, I have no clue. I can't find it on Amazon or ebay, and I don't know where to go for Mexican DVDs. I can PM you the Amazon links to the first 5 volumes separately though.

Since a few people have mentioned it, this isn't a film transfer.

It's off SVHS (or possibly normal VHS.)

The analog noise is what is probably turning on the nostalgia button for people.

I'm not complaining about the quality. It actually looks better than I assumed a Mexican release would lol. I just wish I knew wtf is really going on with this release, whether or not it's bootleg, why it's just the first 52 episodes, what Funimation is doing in regards to this dub, etc.

Wow, they dubbed both Head Cha La and Zenkai Power. They both suck, but it's the thought that counts.
