I wouldn't call it the worst, it did help shove the original music's foot in the door to be acknowledged by dub fans. Although yeah, it's nowhere near the best.B wrote:Did you proofread this? Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
I agree completely. Worst for DBZ is the PLASTIC ART STYLE!It's really ugly, and not to mention the Buu stuff is ugly too.Keamy wrote:While I liked reading the who Buu saga...I found watching it a whole different story.
Also the style and designs on the characters towards the end always pissed me off....everyone got, like...ugly as fuck. I mean I know they aged, but stillll.
Oh and too many "this character gets married, fucks, and has a kid" and all that. Hated the idea of Goten especially.
I was fine with the Cell parts in the story but beyond that...it grew kind of pointless and repetitive to me.
Never watched the movies but the first time I was Broly I was pretty much like..."uh...for REAL?"
GT bothered me as well (style was just...BARF and the new Super Saiyan forms were stupid to me).
Anything beyond SSJ ie. SSJ3 is pretty dumb.
Killing off characters like Tien and Yamcha always pissed me off a little. So much I would have loved to change to my favorite series...
DB in total should have ended at Frieza. The whole story almost seemed like it built up to that point. Having story go on after diminishes the status of the story, tension and the complete build-up to that moment.
There should have only been one SSJ and that should have been Goku.
Also, I hate Goten. That should have been left out.
DBZ is still the best though!!!

It seems this thread has gone onto "What I hate most about Dragon Ball", which is ironic being that this is a Dragon Ball forum.

Hmm, I guess you're right. But the thing that is to be remembered is that we all love it for the flaws it has. What I mostly said is what I think at times but I do really love DB in its total, except GT. I don't like that at all.Perfect wrote:It seems this thread has gone onto "What I hate most about Dragon Ball", which is ironic being that this is a Dragon Ball forum.

I fully agree with this (as I mentioned in my "super saiyans going too far" thread).Attitudefan wrote: DB in total should have ended at Freeza. It also seemed kind of insulting how we had all that build up with Goku vs. Freeza and Goku going ssj, all to have some kid come along, go ssj at the drop of a hat and kill freeza in 10 seconds.
Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
I make mine those words as well. The worst thing that ever happened, in terms of story, was the Saiyans thing going way overboard. Especially Gotens and Trunks. The idea that they were more powerful than guys like Tenshinhan and Yamcha, and managed to reach the Saiyan state out of nowhere is..ugh.KakaR0T wrote:I fully agree with this (as I mentioned in my "super saiyans going too far" thread).Attitudefan wrote: DB in total should have ended at Freeza. Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
While I agree with a lot of the previous points mentioned - the buildup to Freeza (a clash for the sake of the universe, someone who was supposed to be the strongest and most feared being, and a legend coming true once our hero finally comes to terms with his heritage, etc...) seems like it could have been the perfect ending. However, not only is 'the tragic ending' (everyone lived peacefully, except oh wait, Gokou never came back or was heard from again, so...enjoy your happy ending, DB is over) not in the style of what DB was from the start, but without going forward, we would all lose a lot of what made us love the series. We can retroactively glance it all over now, as fans who pretty much know the entire epic, and say 'yeah, this makes sense and would have felt right, and these later arcs did screw some stuff up', but think of when and why many of us got into the series. It might not have remained so important to us if we didn't spend our adolescent or teenage years obsessing over the awesomeness that were the Super Saiyajin, the absurd heights the series reached in the Cell era, fangirling over Trunks (hey, I'm sure almost every female on this board went through that at some point), being caught between the dramatic (Majin Vegeta) and the comedic (Gotenks vs. Buu) moments of the Buu arc...I don't know.
If DB had ended with Freeza, back then, I don't feel like it would have stuck with me. Back then DBZ was all I knew. Saiyajin through Freeza. Would I have cared enough to have eventually gone back and read all of Dragonball? I'm not so sure I would have. Were I a Japanese fan who grew up on the series from the start, I might agree, but then again...didn't the series go on because the Japanese fandom didn't want it to end, and that meant more money for the big bosses to push Toriyama-Sensei to keep going? If the fan majority wanted it to end there, the marketing potential wouldn't have kept going strong enough for that to happen. I think we can only say these things retroactively, as we look back over the series as a whole. Having it continue past the Freeza arc is not the worst thing to happen to Dragonball...it's one of the best. It kept it in our hearts, gave us more to love, theorize about, potential for so many video games, 13 movies, the majority of which were awesome...if the series ended after Gokou defeated Freeza...I don't think I'm wrong in saying a lot of us would have just moved on. It would be another memory of a show we watched when we were young, and it might feel good and nostalgic to go back and watch it again years later, kinda like a Disney movie. But a lot of us wouldn't be here, all these years later, still discussing and debating anything and everything about this silly little Japanese cartoon.

Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
I'd have to admit that I enjoyed every tiny bit of Dragonball until Dragonball Z. It's just more my cup of tea.
I never experienced any unhappiness with the story. I really liked the hazardous journey of Goku in which he fought his way out of any trouble, and I really enjoyed the Tournaments and that other fighters also got a shot to shine from time to time (and actually got compliments from Goku occasionally, as well as the enemies).
The problems started with Dragonball Z. I have to add before I start explaining, that I didn't hate any of DBZ. I rather disliked some of the ideas and some of the events, and mainly, the fugly non-rounded art.
I'll go through every Arc and explain what I thought was the worst with each of them. Remember, I enjoyed most of them a lot, but some things really irked me.
Saiya-jin Arc:
A formidable enemy, the hero's brother, is killed off. We never see him again. Such great potential wasted!
Freeza Arc:
I had no major problems with the story overall.
Trunks Arc:
Trunks, who came from the future and defeated Freeza is not really as confident as we thought him to be. I understand that he has lost confidence from being beaten time after time by the Androids, but come on. Kyle Reese did a better job FFS.
Androids Arc:
More or less, everything with Vegeta. It's not the story, but more his personality that irks me the most, and also his "I can handle this myself" crap. Saiya-jin prince here and Saiya-jin prince there. Get over it already. You are not a prince. You don't even have a planet and the only guy you could rule is almost always stronger than you and disobedient anyways.
Cell Games Arc:
Gohan became a whimp. A 360 degree turn in his personality, in other words.
Tournament Arc:
I didn't like Kaioshin at all. At the first glance when they were introduced, I thought "fuck, the Tournament is being cancelled". Piccolo giving up to Kaioshin? Pfft...
Babidi Arc:
Although it's clear that Gohan didn't train over those 7 years, his fight against Dabra wasn't that hot. And this is after Goku and Vegeta's awesome fights!
We just get another one of those punch and technique spitting fights.
Buu Arc:
Buu surviving Vegeta's suicide explosion. How didn't I see that coming. I understand that it was an interesting character moment, but...it was in vain and useless.
Fusion Arc:
Gotenks! Stop being so stupid!
Sure it was funny, but at moments it wasn't funny anymore. Fusion time run out! Yowch!
Gohan becomes badass and is disgraced and starts to flee, just like he did against Fat Boo.
Kid Buu Arc:
Kid Buu...Urgh...bland and uninteresting enemy overall. Vegeta shown useless once again, and the absence of Gohan and Gotenks.
It would be better IMHO if they all gave it one last shot to defeat him at least. Especially since Gohan and Gotenks would have destroyed Kid Buu with their pinkie.

Godo, one thing I would've added was the original Dragonball cast being stepped on and forgotten, especially Ten and Yamcha. C'mon, really.
Anyways I too enjoy Dragonball but only have some small tidbits I wish were different. I do find it fun to discuss this though as it can go on for ages!

Re: What is the worst ever thing that happened to Dragonball?
If a king dies, the prince does not automatically 'level up' to king. There's ceremony involved. Princes are next in line to one day become king, but it's not something that happens just because the king is dead. If it were that easy, at least half of the historical power struggles wouldn't have happened. Let's say for a second that Tarble is canon (I know people have varying opinions on that). That would mean King Vegeta had (at least) two sons. They'd both be princes. So why, pray tell, would Vegeta automatically become king after his father died? Because he was the oldest? Do we know that? He seemed older than Tarble, but is that confirmed? Is it confirmed he didn't have other siblings, perhaps one that was older? The firstborn usually gets the right to the throne, and that may or may not have been Vegeta. Regardless, the point is that Vegeta was a prince who was (most likely) in line to one day become king of his race. But then shit hit the fan, and not only did the king die, but his entire society, race, and planet. Uh...for what reason, then, would he be proclaimed a king? He was obviously still a footsoldier, elite or otherwise, working for Freeza. There was no one and no reason for him to be crowned king just because his father was dead. Vegeta remained a prince forever, and I think his constant self-proclaiming of this makes that point abundantly obvious.Savage68 wrote:What, exactly, did you check with?LeprikanGT wrote:Last time I checked Vegeta was KING of the Saiyans and Trunks was the PRINCE.

Arrogance at Vegeta's level is synonymous with idiocy. It doesn't matter if it fits his personality and progress as a Saiya-jin. He was still an idiot, even though his actions were explainable with him overestimating himself time after time, which, of course, is a trait of post-Freeza Arc Vegeta.dbgtFO wrote:So many people have this opinion, I don't, as I think it fits with Vegeta's arrogance, which is fueled by the fact, that he has now achieved SSJ and further beyond.AgitoZ wrote:Well first of all Vegeta has always called himself the Prince of Saiyans. It's just that Vegeta became an unbearable, whiny bitch in the Cell arc, constantly moaning 24/7 about Goku being stronger than him and saying "I'm a SSj, I'm the Saiyan Prince, I'm going to kill Kakarrot, ha ha ha!" I could tolerate Vegeta in the Saiyan and Freeza arcs. My favourite incarnation of Vegeta is in the Freeza arc, because he was cold, calculating and I always found that betraying bastard side of him cool. In the Cell arc, I didn't get that sense of pride and honour that the Prince of the Saiyans once had. I got the sense of him being a whiny little baby who didn't get his way and would fully deserve a beating to put him back in his place.dbgtFO wrote:So many people have this opinion, I don't, as I think it fits with Vegeta's arrogance, which is fueled by the fact, that he has now achieved SSJ and further beyond.AgitoZ wrote:Well first of all Vegeta has always called himself the Prince of Saiyans. Admittedly, I did find Vegeta going on about him being the Super Saiyan in the Freeza arc annoying, but 1) He never mentioned it before Goku came along and defeated the Ginyu Force, 2) It's not as annoying as Vegeta's constant hard-on for defeating Goku and 3) His arrogance in the Freeza arc doesn't make him an idiot and put him in stupid situations which he would've never gotten into if his power and arrogance hadn't gone to his head. It was never like that in the Freeza arc. His idiotic moments are part of his personality, don't get me wrong, but it still makes him look like a "brawn, no brains" character.

I think Vegeta's character arc was done pretty dang well... but I also agree that he was just annoying in the Cell arc.

It's hard to measure what the worst thing is, because if you changed almost anything it would mess up the very interesting story of English-speaking fandom we have all had the pleasure and pain of experiencing. I largely like the way things have turned out now, despite so much waiting for a release like the Dragonbox and English dub like the one in Kai.
The nonsensical timeline movies are a lot of fun to watch.
GT is fun to make fun of.
Evolution is even more lulz.
---
If it came to two things, I would say the script-writing for the English dub of Z or the existence of Broli.
