Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
I thought it had been well-documented that there were lots of intentional Dragon Ball homages/parodies in the Sonic games.
Silver's definitely a nod to Trunks. And Trunks specifically, not just the Kyle Reese archetype. Look at his hair (quills?) for example.

There is supposed to be, but it's filled with plotholes.LeprikanGT wrote: Is there a Canon line in Sonic games? I know like the allstar tennis are random side games aren't part of "the story" but is this a continuation of the story since it is just called Sonic the HedgeHog...and no subtitle?
In terms of the 3D games, the order is Sonic Adventure > Sonic Adventure 2 > Sonic Heroes > Shadow the Hedgehog > Sonic The Hedgehog (PS3) > Sonic Unleashed > Sonic Colors?
It's never really clear or established where the 2d games fit, or Secret Rings and Black Knight.
Also it's unbelievably stupid and unoriginal that they called the game "Sonic the Hedgehog." They really couldn't come up with a title?
Anyway, if this is your first 3D Sonic game and you are actually enjoying it, then you will definitely love Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. They're miles ahead of this one.
Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
MetalMadness beat me to it, and probably explained it better than I was going to. The games are vaguely canon to each other, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) isn't a reboot or anything like that, but Sega really doesn't seem to care if plotholes are created between games.LeprikanGT wrote:Is there a Canon line in Sonic games? It's possible that the 2D games are meant to happen before the 3D ones. After all, Sonic already knows Tails, Amy and Knuckles in Sonic Adventure, and he quips about Knuckles getting "tricked by Eggman again", like he did in Sonic 3. But a lot of details changed with Sonic Adventure, like the Super Emeralds being completely absent, leaving only the Master Emerald on Knuckles' island. And in flashbacks it shows that the Chaos Emeralds were at the alter in the past, so it's almost like Sega retcon-combined the regular Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds into one thing...? I dunno.
PS: The Super Emeralds were clearly the Namekian dragon balls.

I lost interest in Sonic after Sonic & Knuckles, the peak of the franchise.

Uh, it's a discussion comparing the Sonic and Dragonball series', which poses as much (if not more in some cases) conversation as anything else in this forum. I fail to see what the problem is, here.Taku128 wrote:Sure is Dragon Ball in here.
Though personally I think the topic title should be changed since we're well beyond just Trunks/Silver at this point.

Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
No, it's a half-assed attempt at disguising a Sonic the Hedgehog discussion as being related to Dragon Ball. Everything that can be said was said in the first few posts before diving into general Sonic talk, because there's nothing else to it but "This character is like this character and Super Sonic is a Super Saiyan reference." A "Dragon Ball similarities and references" topic could actually stay on-topic for longer then five posts, and would've been a much better topic then making one about a single character whose only similarity is a cliche that didn't even start with Dragon Ball. In fact I'm pretty sure we've had those topics before, and all of the Sonic connections always come up within the first page.Suupaa Gohan 2 wrote:Uh, it's a discussion comparing the Sonic and Dragonball series', which poses as much (if not more in some cases) conversation as anything else in this forum. Been around since Sonic 3 & Knuckles. or, well, "been around", they never actually appeared elsewhere.Nazi Cola wrote: Huh? Now there are Super Emeralds? o_O

Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
Beaten to it again. There were in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but haven't been seen since. To be fair, since they're not seen in Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles alone, and since you have to get all the regular emeralds first, and since you lose the regular emeralds as soon as you start getting the Super Emeralds, it's possible that the regular Chaos Emeralds actually become the Super Emeralds. If so, they've changed back since then and have never been mentioned again.Nazi Cola wrote:Huh? Now there are Super Emeralds? o_O
...And Hyper Sonic is obviously Super Saiyan 2. I'm still expecting Sonic Team to introduce some kind of Super Sonic 3 and fusion in future games.

Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
I've never played Sonic 2006, nor have I looked up the back-story to Silver, but he always did remind me of Trunks.
In my opinion, there is way too many similarities between the two franchises for it not to be unintentional. I know there's a rumor that Yuji Naka apparently denied that Super Sonic was an homage to Super Saiyan. I personally don't believe that statement.
Come to think of it, Dr. Eggman's normal hover chair sort of reminds me of Freeza's hover chair...

I'm shocked to see that nobody has brought up the implication that Tails = a combination of Bulma and Krillin.

Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
I actually just thought a few minutes ago that Tails is like Bulma + Gohan, but with Gohan's personality. Combine the brains of both and you've got Tails. Kuririn....seems more like Omochao to me.Suupaa Gohan 2 wrote:I'm...shocked that you somehow got Bulma + Kuririn and not Gohan...
Also, Big the Cat and Froggy are like Fat Buu and Bee. Both Big and Fat Buu aren't so bright and they both have a pet they consider a best friend. What do you guys think?
He's practically Sonic's younger brother, though.Zephyr wrote:Tails is Sonic's tech savvy best friend, not his son.
Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
Well, Yuji Naka was into DB(along with a lot of 80s-90s hip hop and rock, which explains the catchy tunes), and even said that the Sonic 3-saga Special Zone's shape was based on Kaio's planet. Silver may very well be inspired by Trunks.
Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
These are a lot of great match up guys.
Another one I've noticed is that Metal Sonic from Sonic Heroes is a lot like Cell (He has the abilities of all the fighters and he becomes more perfect when he takes in more energy from others).

Things like that usually don't matter when you're making comparisons between multiple series', or it'd be a lot more difficult to match up characters. Tails doesn't have to be the main character's son for the comparison to be valid. His personality and role is very similar to Gohan's, and I suppose you could add the Bulma aspect for his tech-savvyness. Though considering it's Gohan, and what he goes on to become, I'd say you could consider Tails as being kid and adult Gohan at the same time; what Gohan would likely be if he wasn't forced into getting involved into all that crazy fighting. The 'happy-go-lucky tag-along nerd kid who helps more with his mind than his body' archetype.Zephyr wrote:Tails is Sonic's tech savvy best friend, not his son.Suupaa Gohan 2 wrote:I'm...shocked that you somehow got Bulma + Kuririn and not Gohan...

Re: Silver is the Trunks of the Sonic universe?
Nice catch. I also noticed that in that when Metal Sonic reaches his perfect form, only thing that can beat him is the "super power of teamwork!". And in Dragon Ball, when Cell reaches his perfect form, the only thing that can beat him is the power of a Super Saiyan 2.Lum-Chan~ wrote:These are a lot of great match up guys.

Also both are defeated in a similar manner. For Metal Sonic, all of the heroes try attacking him but none can harm him, and he is finally defeated by a Team Blast by Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. For Cell, during the final beam struggle, all of the Z-fighters try to attack him but none can harm him (in the anime at least), and he is finally defeated by a Team Kamehameha by Gohan and Goku (and Vegeta's help).
