Toriyama question. (Perhaps some irony?)
Was Toriyama left or right handed?
In most instances that I can think of where a single hand or arm is rendered useless, it is almost exclusively the left. There are some purely right arm injuries and the like, with Nail, Cell Gero, and Major Metallic, but they seemed much less frequent while I was skimming through the manga. I was just curious if this was intentional or a case of Toriyama not remembering what arm he broke on who. If he was left handed, perhaps it was an attempt at the man to say he was tired of drawing an action story (...Dragon Ball lol) and wanted to return to his gag roots. These were all I remembered:
1. Cymbal - Even though his torso is sliced in half at the same time, Yajirobe also severs the left hand from the Daimao's offspring.
2. Son Goku - He fights Piccolo Daimao, and in addition to having both his legs crushed, Piccolo renders the left arm useless. The right hand is then used to preform the "Penetrate"/Oozaru Fist/Dragon Fist/whatever you want to call it to bust through the Great Demon King's chest.
Note: The same thing happens at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, but Piccolo Jr. renders the right arm useless first, so meh.
3. Piccolo (1) - While fighting with Goku at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, the Namekian fires off a homing ki attack. Goku skillfully evades the beam and manages to have hit Piccolo in his left arm, rendering it useless until he pulls it off and regrows it.
4. Piccolo (2) - While fighting with Raditz, Goku is able to dodge his brother's ki attack, Piccolo on the other hand is not so lucky and loses his left arm partway through the battle.
5. Tenshinhan - In the battle with Nappa, the Saiyan manages to slice clean through the fighters left arm through either ki backed brute force, or some sort of technique similar to Sauza's ki blade (that was way to clean a cut lol). Though I suppose Ten wasn't smart in killing himself with a Kikoho, after all, he said it himself that Nappa would be in trouble when it grew back. =P
5.5. Dodoria - While the creature looks like it has a broken left arm, going so far as to hold his shoulder for two panels, it seems the arm is actually fine when he attempts to flee for his life from Vegeta.
6. Vegeta (1) - The Saiyan seems to get his arm broken, or at least severely injured, during the battle with Reacoom, as he is continiously holding his left shoulder until Goku throws him a Senzu.
7. Freeza - Like Cymbal, his torso is sliced in two along with his left arm, though by his own attack. After Goku gives him some energy, the tyrant uses the only appendage left, his right arm to attack the Super Saiyan.
8. Vegeta (2) - Jinzoningen shatter's the left arm of the Saiyan prince in one swift kick that truly looks painful...
9. Piccolo (3) - Poor Piccolo huh? This time he has all the energy as well as other things sucked out from his arm while plotting to get information from Cell in his imperfect form.
10. Cell - Angry at Gohan for surpassing him with the Super Saiyan 2 transformation, the creature fires a Kamehameha at Gohan and the Earth. Gohan retaliates with his own smaller, yet more powerful Kamehamea and obliterates a lot of Cell's body: both legs and his left arm are destroyed by the attack.
11. Gohan (1) - In order to protect Vegeta, Gohan takes a blast to the left arm and renders it useless for the upcoming Kamehameha duel.
12. Gohan (2) - Gohan loses his left arm to the Jinzoningen in the future that Trunks came from.
12.5. Trunks - While it isn't actually broken, Trunks decides to fight Goten without using his left arm...
13. Vegeta (3) - Vegeta's tying Piccolo after Majin Buu render's the "enslaved" prince's arm useless in a fit of rage. That loss seemed to be too much for him though, cause shortly afterward he commits suicide. =P
14. Babidi - The wizard manages to convince Piccolo that there isn't a reason to keep him around. The Namekian then slices him in half with a swift karate chop that is so powerful, that it mimics the past and cleaves the torso in two while removing the left arm but keeping the right just like Freeza and Cymbal.
15. Vegeta (4) - My god it is evident now that Toriyama really did hate Vegeta, the prince wins by once again gaining an injured arm from the battle with Kid Buu that doesn't leave its hanging position at his side until his wounds are healed when he returns to life via Porunga. (Odd that most his wounds seem to heal but his ki isn't restored, the two TYPICALLY go hand in hand for Dragon Ball, but he does attack Buu without transforming afterward. Dunno.)
I didn't include Buu in here due to his carefree "I don't care what part of me gets blown up cause I am made of goo" attitude. Also, I admit there very well may be some I skipped, or some I just forgot. (And yes, I realize my question and the rest of the post have fairly little to do with each other. xD)

Wow
That was one long list! Maybe Toriyama really did hate left handers, and showed it by rendering it useless most of the time.

Re: Toriyama question. (Perhaps some irony?)
I don't think there's any hidden agenda here.
Most of Toriyama's characters are right-handed because most people are right-handed. Therefore, when he wants to give them a hindering injury but still have them be able to fight, he injures their left arm. As you yourself pointed out, in situations where he wants the character to seem totally incapacitated, he goes for the right one (Goku at the end of the Majunior fight).

Re: Toriyama question. (Perhaps some irony?)
It's not really "ironic", just coincidental. Sorry to nitpick, but I'm one of those people who don't like it when people call something ironic when really it's just a coincidence... Like "I was at the mall yesterday." "Really? Wow, I was there today! How ironic!"

Re: Toriyama question. (Perhaps some irony?)
In this video at 1:17, you can see he draws right-handed. The question remains whether he was ambidextrous or just right-handed (I'm guessing he was just right-handed).TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Was Toriyama left or right handed?
Anyway, I'll have to agree with Cipher on this one and say that there doesn't really seem to be any hidden agenda, just that most people tend to be right-handed. That is quite a list you guys have though. Especially you dbgtFO.

Yeah I guess I went a little crazy with that list, the main point is that right handed people are the most common of the people we see at least, just like in the real world

Re: Toriyama question. (Perhaps some irony?)
This, obviously. The characters are always smart enough to realize that if you really want to incapacitate someone, take out their left arm. The hidden powers within the left arm are just too much to be reckoned with, so taking it out is always a wise battle strateg...dbgtFO wrote:Or maybe he thinks left handers are superior and then decided to show us that without your left arm you are pretty much done for, unless you are Goku.
Okay, I can't do it. But I'm left-handed and tired of being the looked-down-upon minority, so I wanted to make myself feel better

One interesting thing to note is that Vegeta was able to distract SUPER PERFECT CELL!! with a generic ki blast, fired from his left hand.. in base form... that's right BASE. I just think that scene was stupid.
And so I will agree with Piccolo Daimao, that maybe we are just overanalyzing this subject and that it's entirely coincidentical that a lot of finishing blows are done with the right hand.

Re: Toriyama question. (Perhaps some irony?)
When I observe Toriyama's art style, I come to the conclusion that he's right handed.
I can't really explain why, but it's the way certain lines (like those under a character's eyes) are drawn. I draw them the same way as Toriyama does, and I think a left-handed person would draw them in a different order. I'm right-handed, so I would think Toriyama is, too.
Dayum, that sounds confusing. But having drawn Dragonball fanart for like, what, 10 years now? I think I have a fairly good grasp of Toriyama-san's drawing style.

Usually goes by "Kevtrev" elsewhere online.
Draws comics that may or may not have been blatantly inspired by Akira Toriyama's manga.

He's a righty.
In the World Guide, he's seen drawing with his right hand:

I wipe it off the tile, the light is brighter this time, everything is 3D blasphemy.
My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up, this is not the way I picture me.
I can't control my shakes, how the hell did I get here? Something about this, so very wrong.
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this. Is it a dream or a memory?
