Anyone actually like DBE?
I just rewatched it and its cheesy and cheap, yes but still enjoyable as a movie on its own. I wasn't expecting oscar worthy dialogue or acting either. Plus it seems the main stream of hatred was changing the story and making goku white...right...either the haters are all racists or this isn't as bad a decision as everyone makes out. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IF HE'S WHITE, BLUE, YELLOW OR BROWN?

The changes and race of the actors don't bother me at all. The acting is awful, the plot is vague and dumb, the fights are boring, and the special effects look like something out of Power Rangers the Movie. I disagree that it's enjoyable as a movie on its own, but that's just my opinion.

Goku being white didn't bother me at all, since Goku is, after all, AN ALIEN.
However, the rest of the movie did bother me XD

Re: Anyone actually like DBE?
I for one was able to like it enough to buy the DVD. From a DBZ fan standpoint, I came to accept the fact that this was not going to be a movie for us. Like WANTED, DBE as a stand alone movie probably would have been just "okay". However, they used the name to make profit off of the established fanbase. A plan which backfired however, compared to what they could have made if effort was put into a better caliber moive.
As for Goku being white, since casual movie goers at best, know DBZ as "that Japanese cartoon where they fight" mentally most are expecting to see the type of action associated with "martial arts" movies. And stereotypiclly the Asian association comes with that. When some learned this was not the case, it was a turn off right there IMO. I do agree an to some extent, an Asian should have been cast in the role. IF the movie was a showcase of the fighting. That's not to say that it had to be an Asian actor though.
Overall, if they called this movie something other than Dragonball, I think it could have at least fared as a made for TV movie.

It's not just DBE which suffered something like this, as The Last Airbender also had people up in arms that the characters weren't blatantly Asian. While I haven't personally seen DBE (I'm not exactly a fan of the "let's make a live action version of a cartoon/animé!" craze), all signs point to it just being a bad movie.Ussj Future Trunks wrote:Plus it seems the main stream of hatred was changing the story and making goku white...

Me!
I saw it twice in theatres, and own it on Blu-Ray.
For the premiere I went in costume.
Okay, it was kind of so awful it was good. I found it hilarious, and I really enjoyed the Goku/ChiChi subplot.
Piccolo only got like 5 lines. But it was better than the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie.

Goku is white in the manga/animé... Look at the Saiyans compared to the Androids, the Androids are obviously on Asian descent whereas the main characters seem to look Caucasian, I'm sure I read about this ages ago...Ussj Future Trunks wrote:I just rewatched it and its cheesy and cheap, yes but still enjoyable as a movie on its own. Anyway, Animé characters rarely look specifically any race, I mean... Aesthetically there aren't many differences between Caucasian and Asian, Hell, 'Asian' is even part of our classification. Contrast this to the Androids who to me are clearly Asian and you get the idea.
Goku is an alien that I see to have characteristics of a Caucasian male... Any problems?

I found no problems with it actually. Everything seemed clear and explained, unlike some parts in DBZ and I wasnt expecting oscar worthy acting either. The plot is vague and dumb
So what? I was just saying how skin colour doesn't mean jackshit. They could have made goku freaking purple and it wouldn't matter in the slightest.Goku is white in the manga/animé

Same here. It's a great laugh when you watch it with a group of friends (even without the help of alcohol) but however I do not recommended watching it alone. For some reason it's just painful to watch.Castor Troy wrote:It was a guilty pleasure for me.
Re: Anyone actually like DBE?
It's like an unfunny version of the Power Rangers movie.
Actually, wasn't there a post a while back about how that was a better adaptation of the Piccolo Daimao arc than DBE was? Oh well. No one hates the movie for being unfaithful to the source material. They hate it for being a really bad movie. For me, this doesn't quite cross over into "so good it's bad" territory either. It's just ... bad in a painfully unfunny way.

I actually liked the cleavage in DBE... That's about it.
Re: Anyone actually like DBE?
The main stream of hatred is not necessarily due to race or casting issues, but leaning towards the execution of the film itself. Furthermore, it really doesn't make a difference if Goku was cast white, blue, yellow, or brown, but there would be a problem is he didn't have black hair and skin painted to a lighter pigment.Ussj Future Trunks wrote:I just rewatched it and its cheesy and cheap, yes but still enjoyable as a movie on its own. You're countering your own statement. Also...are you talking about the androids' eyes? That's ridiculous.Jaruka wrote:Anyway, Animé characters rarely look specifically any race, I mean... There is more evidence to support that Goku should aesthetically be of asian descent if brought to live action. So yes, there is a problem.Jaruka wrote: Goku is an alien that I see to have characteristics of a Caucasian male... Any problems?

I do! As both Dragonball and stand-alone movie. It is funny how people call it a bad movie and it's their reason to dislike the film, when pretty much most popular movies are worse. I guess most Dragonball fans are that twisted.Anyone actually like DBE?
Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to see it on theater but I own the DVD and from time to time I usually watch it. What I won't give to see the extended fight between Piccolo & Goku...

Re: Anyone actually like DBE?
I watched it twice, the first time on my friend's bootleg, the second time at the cinema with the same friend. Both times I hated it. It failed both as a Dragon Ball adaptation and a stand-alone film. Awful acting, poorly set-out storyline, bad special effects, terrible fight choreography, shit dialogue and delivery...everything about it was bad. I haven't bought it on DVD and will not, because it'll be a waste of money.
The friend I went to the cinema liked it, pretty much because it was Dragon Ball. He's the kind of person who likes film adaptations of things he likes mainly because...it's an adaptation of that thing, even if the film itself is terrible. I don't understand, since Dragon Ball Evolution didn't feel or look like Dragon Ball to me, but each to their own.

Re: Anyone actually like DBE?
It's an awful movie and a piss poor adaptation. But I kind of liked it because of the little resemblance to Dragon Ball it had. I saw it in theaters twice with my friends. The first time I was a little inebriated and enjoyed it more than I should have. Later I picked up the Blu-Ray. It was an interesting experiment and I take comfort in the fact that we'll never see anything like it again. It's an important part of Dragon Ball history. As in "don't do this ever again".
EDIT: It was 10x better than The Last Airbender

Re: Anyone actually like DBE?
I didn't really like it at all. It felt rushed, cheap and didn't stay true to the characters. Minor differences are minor differences but for a fan it can lead to annoyance and disgust. In my opinion it should have just gone straight to DVD. Until they have the guts to release a full feature film that stays true to the story, then I don't think a live action adaptation can be successful IMHO.

The guts?! You can wait seated then, that won't never happen. You hardly can have a more closer adaptation to Dragonball than DBE. But who am I talking to? Even the Dragonballs design people bitch about cause they aren't like the original.Raithos wrote:Until they have the guts to release a full feature film that stays true to the story, then I don't think a live action adaptation can be successful IMHO.
It is pretty sad the majority of the Dragonball fandom are a bunch of stupid, retard kids. Another Dragonball live-action film won't happen. Even before the movie was in production people bitched about it.

Re: Anyone actually like DBE?
I like it at first until I rewatch the movie on HBO, and notice how awful this movie was. I like it as a "its so bad that its good" type of movie, but otherwise no. I hope someone will buy the rights to Dragon Ball/Z again, and give us a better movie.
Three live action Dragon Ball movies, and they all sucked.

No one will buy a license that doesn't give profit from the start. Only a lunatic would buy the rights to do a Dragonball film at this point.Hellspawn28 wrote:I hope someone will buy the rights to Dragon Ball/Z again, and give us a better movie. .
