The End of Kai?

Post by LeprikanGT » Sat Oct 23, 2010 10:44 am

Didn't Toriyama draw two differen endings the DBZ? Like at the point Goku and Uub are flying off? Which ending do you think Kai will go with?

Considering Kai is using the original Anime's footage, I don't really think they have a choice, there...

Besides, the 'new' ending isn't as good, IMO; that panel with Vegeta should not exist, period. It contradicts everything we've seen in the culmination of his character arc.

I don't really KNOW the differences, just that they exist. All I know is that Uub and Goku fly off to train? [Aren't they on the Earth still? Why didn't everyone just go visit them where Uub was? They all have super speed by that point, yeah?]

Is there a page that has both manga endings? [in English] I'd like to see what was changed from the first one to this new one.

Why yes, there just so happens to be one, indeed...!

I don't think much of Kai, so it won't matter what Funimation decides at that point.

Nothing in this discussion has anything to do with FUNimation what-so-ever.

It is actually possible that they'll redraw the final scene. Kai is to Z what the Kanzenban are to the Tankobon, it's an update of the format, with minor corrections. At the end of the Kanzenban, they made an effort to propose a new death scene for Boo (events stay the same, but the visuals are modified to be more impressive) and a new ending with Oob and Goku flying away too. It conveys more explicitely the feeling of legacy (by giving Kinto-Un and having a direct comparison of young Goku and young Oob) and show that Vegeta and Goku will ALWAYS be rival even if they are now friends - they're pure-blooded Saiyans, of course Vegeta will never cease to have competition with Goku! It is necessary to show that Vegeta's new respect for Goku doesn't mean they'll stop their competition - which is probably one of the favorite elements for fans which has lasted ever since they met - and end on the fact that it will go on for the rest of their lives, and possibly in the afterlife). Goku and Vegeta's relationship evolves, it doesn't stop.

To celebrate the end of Kai and keep with the update process, it is not impossible that the last minute of the last episode will be reanimated to match the new ending. If they can do 30 minutes for a mere game, I guess they can do one minute for the very end of the show, especially since they don't know if they'll animate anything about Dragon Ball again anytime soon. So all bets are off.

If they can do half an episode of the first episode, they could throw us a bone and add it as an extra or something.

I personally hope they leave the ending alone and just keep the original. The original anime took liberties, retconned things, contradicted things. Kai is supposed to be closer to the original, so we don't need to recognize any other retcons. Harumph.

Not really. Just because Vegeta no longer hates Gokû, doesn't mean he won't still strive to be better than him and want to defeat him some day. Just not with the insane "OMG RAAAAAAAAAAAAGE" he had before.

He can still not hate Goku and them still be extreme rivals...just means he won't kill him out of nowhere.

That's not the point. It's still a useless revision.

But it doesn't really fit the tone of the scene as a whole. He no sooner got through having a real nice farewell with the guy, and now the series is ending - the ending should close on Gokou and Uubu, off to their new fate. Tossing in that one last panel of Vegeta just seems like a cue for 'the end...OR IS IT?! DUN DUN DUN!!!!!!!!!' and it feels really, really stupid and out of place. Rivalry or otherwise, it was a really stupid thing to throw in as the note to close the series on.

Also, animating the Kanzenban ending? Does that idea not seem preposterous to anyone else? I'm not talking about the idea that they'd never do it or anything like that. But fans complain about how glaring the reanimated shots look at times, and those are usually only onscreen very briefly between the existing old animation. Imagine watching the entire last episode with the old footage, and then getting a whole tacked on 3-5ish minute ending scene of the Kanzenban ending, all done ground-up with the new animation style. It would look incredibly, incredibly stupid compared to the rest of the episode. I agree that the Vegeta panel aside, the Kanzenban ending with Uubu getting Kinto'un was a cute little bonus, but there's no reason to have it in the Anime, and adding it in with new animation would just look really crappy for the sake of such a tiny little difference.

It's not like Vegeta and Goku had some long, heartfelt goodbye makeout session or something. Ten years before, he called Goku "#1." After that, wouldn't it be Saiyan nature to at least have a friendly rivalry? If not, then it's generally something you find amongst serious martial artists to begin with.

Plus, the tone of that last Vegeta panel was a humorous one, anyway. I got a chuckle out of it.

So I take it you hated their rivalry in the JSAT special?

Agreed, therefore I wouldn't mind if they did go with the new ending.

Not at all. I have no problem with the rivalry. I just have a problem with "updates," with "special editions," with "director's cuts," and all that nonsense. Once the story's written, it's written (and drawn), and going back and changing things is something that angers me to no end.

So, how about those Star Wars movies? <_<

In any case, I wouldn't mind if they animated it as an extra for DVD release, but for the TV viewing, yeah, stick with the original.

The entire last episode should be reanimated to look like the JSAT.
