Toriyama making the big money

Post by GS7X7 » Tue Oct 26, 2010 3:48 am

How much money did Toriyama make off of all his work from Dragon Ball?

Also, how much did he get paid for the live-action Dragon Ball movie that was made?

How are we supposed to know? That's private stuff. I don't even know how much my father makes from his job.

Billions.

That's not meant to be a smartass post, that's just my guess. Dragon Ball is a super popular franchise and it no doubt made Toriyama rich beyond his wildest dreams. Nobody knows the amount of yen in his bank account.

I remember somewhere reading that the Dragonball franchise was approximately worth 3 Billion dollars. But it was a long time ago and probably wasnt a reliable source.

Would be a shitload though...

There is a lot of difference between how much a franchise is worth and how much the author receives. Generally, the author just receives a very small percentage of all the profit. Pretty much almost all of it goes to the companies and corporations that have something to the with the franchise, just like in the music industry.

J.K Rowling is worth approximately $1billion, not sure how much the Harry Potter franchise is worth though. So I'm sure he has a lot of money.

Toriyama is not in Japan`s 40 richest men, so he is worth less than $0.62 billion.

I think the 3 billion figure was from many years ago. It could possibly be 4-5 now.

So if we assume he gets paid only 1% of what DB makes that's still 30 million at least. And aren't there rumors he was heavily bribed by SJ/Toei to continue DB after the Freeza saga when he supposedly really wanted it to end?

If I did the math right, the manga has made almost 800 million U.S. dollars all by itself, so I guess a portion of that is his. And then you have money made from overseas, the anime, random merch like t-shirts and toys and Vegeta-shaped food... Dude is loaded.

That'd be an interesting subject- tracking how much money DB has earned in all industries from all countries.

That's assuming his contract of the Japanese manga publication doesn't have a clause in it that had him selling away the rights to anything outside the Japanese manga publication.

Toriyama could easily afford his own small army of Japanese sex maids.

I'm pretty sure he had nothing to do with DBE the last time I check. I remember him saying in a interview that he had no idea that it was getting made? He seems like a type of guy does not like to see his work on the big screen (Not like Alan Moore who refuses to watch V for Vendetta, or Watchmen).

I don't think he's like Moore. I just think if it was a GOOD movie he'd be excited.

Plus, in one manga chapter (sidenotes at end that I don't think Viz bothers to include) he mentions talking to a famous actor (Jackie Chan?) about making a movie. (sometime in the 90's)

How much did Stan Lee get for Spider-Man 1?

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/10/ ... 7513.shtml

Ah. They wanted to stiff him but he sued. One complaint though- Lee seems to say he's never been very rich prior to 2002 but I'm sure he was pretty loaded even before the movie profits came in but with the movie profits coming in now he's probably much richer than he was beforehand. Plus I'm pretty sure he executive-produced a handful of successful cartoons.

So Fox probably didn't want to pay Toriyama anything unless it really had to. Even if they stiffed him, with the movie as such a complete bomb I doubt he'd feel the need to complain.

Hirohiko Araki, the creator of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, a legendary series that ran in SJ with DB and is still going(every new volume onstantly makes the monthly top ten manga sales lists of all Japan), is loaded. I mean, he has an entire hall in his pad that acts as a library for his manga, references, and music CDs. Guy lives in a mansion IIRC, and this is coming from a series that ran since the 80s and is only popular in Japan, China, France, and Italy. DB has success all over the world, has an anime, movies, and merchandise. Akira Toriyama must be HYPER loaded.

DragonBallZ.com's History page said that it's worth 3 billion...But that was quite sometime ago. The place never updates.
