Dragon Ball parodies

Post by Super Sonic » Tue Feb 17, 2004 2:37 am

Has anyone seen parodies of DBZ on some of Cartoon Network's non-anime? On an episode of "Billy and Many" called "ChickenBall Z", Mandy eats a magic chicken ball and gets super saiyan like powers and kicks booty. Also on an episode of Kids Next Door, several different versions of a story happen to different animation styles, and one of them has Numbuh 4 like Goku and the Delightful children like a multiheaded Frieza.

Off the top of my head, there's been a couple of DBZ parodies in The Powerpuff Girls. The whole episode has some subtle references, but the most obvious is when the villian, already haven beaten two of the girls, starts trash talking to Blossom before shooting at her. Blossom stands still and tilts her head sideways, avoiding the beam, exactly as Goku does in, er, that episode he does it (against Nappa? I forget). They then fight in patented "moving too fast for the eye to see" style.

Oh, and Ultimate Muscle seems to be rife with "powering-up" jokes generally, and DBZ ones specifically.

I seem to recall reading that Toriyama based some stuff off of Kinnikuman, so perhaps the homages are actually going the other way ^^;;.

Ahh, I keep forgetting that the current "Ultimate Muscle" (or whatever it's Japanese name is) is a follow up to the original.

True, the original Kinnikuman is older than DB, and so Toriyama would have based some stuff off of it. But the new one is newer than DB, so it could very well be piss-taking the show that paid homage to it's parent.

I have worked my way out of that!

Actually concerning the Powerpuff Girls, I remember reading somewhere that Craig McCracken, the creator was heavily influenced by DBZ when he was making the show. I think I actually may still have the article that says it.

Mojo-Jojo(I think that's his name) always reminded me a lot of Piccolo, looks wise (obviously).

Oh...and of course there's that infamous "Cartman going super Saiyan sorta" part in the South Park movie, even if that's non-Cartoon Network stuff.

Mojo Jojo is based on a whole crapload of anime characters, none of which I can remember at the moment. Even his style of talk is slightly based on dubbed anime, specifically the way that sentences often sound a bit convoluted because they have to try and fit the lip flaps.

And I don't know if it's intentional, but in the FUNI dub, Ninja dude-Murasaki sounds an awful lot like Mojo...

McCracken actually seems to spend most of his interview time saying that the look of the girls isn't based on anime, but on the paintings of someone called Keane who I can't remember the first name of. That and early Hanna-Barbara. But the action stuff is certainly influenced by anime, and yeah, I remember him mentioning DBZ.

I think in that song he was referring to King Kamehameha.

Yes, his from Hawaiian mythology. It was apparently purely coincidence that Toriyama's wife threw out the name to him.

I think I wrote that

When I met Gendy he said Craig was heavily influenced by Japanese animation. Consider that as you watch the PPG fight the Princess for the first time and it almost shot for shot a rehash of Piccolo fighting himself in the animation filler.

Was it Piccolo? I was sure the "casually tilt head sideways to avoid lethal energy blast" was something Goku did. Possibly against Nappa. Or one of the Ginyu.

Where'd you write that anyway, Omae?

No, no, it was Piccolo when he splits in half to fight himself while Gohan is trying to escape by building that boat and leaving on it, one of him shoots his Makankosappo and the other casually tilts his head to avoid it's path.

Ahh, gotcha.

Y'know, the fact that Princess keeps changing into stronger and stronger costumes also parodies the whole transformation thing that kicked in with Freeza.

I watched maybe 2 episodes. It was pretty good, but nothing to Spongebob. That, and it's pretty embarrassing if anybody knows you watch it (for a guy anyway).
