Do you think the series would be as popular if we had a strong female saiyan in the Z Team ala DBM?

Yeah, but not for the same reasons. Think about it: a very in-shape female whose clothes get ripped up and off every time she fights.

Actually, I want to think one of Toriyama's comments on the inspiration for Dragonball implying that he might have picked a boy protagonist to be different from Dr. Slump. But... maybe I'm reading too much into it...

I dunno, Toriyama isn't terribly good at writing female characters, usually resorting to gender roles and sexualization, with some exceptions. Cyborg 18 is the only female character that I can think of that people really like (again, with some exceptions), and that's only because she kicked Vegeta's ass so calmly that people call her "cold", and because her back-story and information are so scant that people call her "mysterious." In fact, knowing Goku's naive personality, a female Goku would probably have the naivety used against her by other characters so they can sexually take advantage of her.

In fact, that sounds exactly like something that Toriyama would do.

EDIT: To clarify, I'm referring to DBZ/Late-DB Goku. Toriyama isn't a pedophile.

A good number of later-gen characters probably wouldn't be born; there'd be no Gohan, Goten, Pan, and possibly no Trunks or Bura.

There'd probably be a chance that female Goku would end up with male Vegeta.

If Goku was a girl then that would mean Chi-Chi would have be a boy instend. I don't think I would like to see Goku as a female in the series

Just because Goku's a girl doesn't necessarily have to mean Chi-Chi would be a boy instead. Not everyone has to be gender-swapped.

It does if Gohan and Goten are going to exist. Unless Gokuu marries someone else, or they get a sperm donor or something (and Gokuu would have to be the recipient in order for them to be half-Saiyan). The idea of Gokuu, who's scared to death of needles, being artificially inseminated is pretty crazy, though.

Then again, pregnant Gokuu at all is also kind of crazy, because she'd somehow have to calm down for 9 months.
