Unlike certain instances with King Kai, I had no trouble figuring out what Recoome was saying at all.

I just thought I would pop in and say as the token Australian, that I found Jheese and the whole "Space Australia" bit absolutely hilarious.
I burst out laughing once the "Space Broncos" were mentioned. Great episode guys.

I didn't really find "Space Australia" that funny, since it's been done before. Taking it one step further with "Space Broncos" however, was what got me laughing (even though I hate rugby).Captain Awesome wrote:I just thought I would pop in and say as the token Australian, that I found Jheese and the whole "Space Australia" bit absolutely hilarious.

Would Space Rugby be played in Zero Gravity?

Honestly, I thought the whole Space Australia thing was pretty funny since it answered the question most of us asked when we first heard 1999 Jheese speak: "Why does he have an Australian accent? There's no Australia on their Earth!"Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:I didn't really find "Space Australia" that funny, since it's been done before. The same thing can be said for characters on the show who speak with an American accent. Just saying.Tsukento wrote:Honestly, I thought the whole Space Australia thing was pretty funny since it answered the question most of us asked when we first heard 1999 Jheese speak: "Why does he have an Australian accent? What in the world is an American accent?

I've talked to someone from NZ who thought my American accent was fake, and said that the FUNi dub of DBZ used "bad American accents". I got the impression she meant their accents sounded fake, but maybe I took it wrong... XD

I mean, I can understand a Brooklyn accent or a southern/Texan accent. But for the life of me, I didn't think we had a universal American accent. Is that similar to speaking American?

Is the same thing as saying someone has a british accent, even though there many types of accents in Britain or saying someone has a Portuguese accent, even though there are many types of accents in Portugal.Tsukento wrote:I mean, I can understand a Brooklyn accent or a southern/Texan accent. Normally people don`t know them well enough (or the country) to pinpoint exactly the type of accent it is, but they sometimes know enough to be able to tell from which country the person is from.
I don`t see what is strange about that.

I'm not sure if this is where you're going with this, but most people think, "I don't have an accent!" But, in fact, they do have an accent; it just doesn't occur to them because their accent translates to "normal" to them and everyone else who has the same accent.Tsukento wrote:I mean, I can understand a Brooklyn accent or a southern/Texan accent. In any case, there is a general American accent. It's what most people on TV have (especially newscasters). I can't even describe it myself because it's just "normal" speech to me.
And as for all the "Space American accents", clearly the only solution is to dub the show without speech. Have dialogue cards like in silent movies.

At which point you'd be better off just playing the BGM+SFX track without any dubbing and with the jpn version's subtitles on.

American English sounds like an accent to those who speak British English. Americans tend to enunciate their "R"s and pronounce some vowels differently.

I'm just saying that an alien speaking with an Australian accent, is just as weird as an alien speaking with an American accent.TripleRach wrote: And as for all the "Space American accents", clearly the only solution is to dub the show without speech. Have dialogue cards like in silent movies.

Yes, I'm fairly certain the speech pattern common to newscasters is based on how Nebraskans speak. (I live in Nebraska -- I think it was mentioned at some point in a conversation as what was intended to be a point of...state pride??) It's the most "accentless" American accent, or something (or at least, the easiest to understand across the board). I've heard that they actually train U.S. (national) newscasters to have this particular speech pattern/pronunciation of words. At least, I hardly ever notice any newscasters (okay, I hardly watch any news) who say anything differently than I do, and I grew up in/still live in Nebraska. (And a little bit in Kansas -- and yes -- there is a difference!)TripleRach wrote:In any case, there is a general American accent. It's what most people on TV have (especially newscasters). Anyway. As they say (or as somebody says XD I forget who), if an alien race were to come to Earth they probably wouldn't be able to even tell one language from another (to say nothing of accents!)...at least not immediately.

Yeah, we do it the RIGHT way! IN AMERICA!Innagadadavida wrote:American English sounds like an accent to those who speak British English. Americans tend to enunciate their "R"s and pronounce some vowels differently.

Basically, yeah. The general American accent would probably be the Midwest, which is around where I am, Ohio. That also checks in with ShiningMoon's example of Nebraska too.Innagadadavida wrote:American English sounds like an accent to those who speak British English. I'm planning on buying the Space Australia one. Normally I don't buy fandom/internet related t-shirts, but that ones pretty subtle I think.
