Dragon Ball Eps. 1-13 on DVD

Post by Slickmasterfunk » Wed Jul 20, 2005 3:50 pm

I know this is an old topic, but I'm just wondering if anyone has heard anything new about Trimark's (Kidmark) license expiring on the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball. I really want FUNimation to release these episodes uncut and with the Japanese language track. I know I could get the Region 4 PAL discs from Australia but I don't have any means to play it and I don't really feel like buying a Region Free or 4 player to play this one set.

Trimark is a greedy company. They just re-newed the licence till 2007. We have to wait until they give up the series. They want $ from Funimation, and Funimation is not willing to spend millions to get it from them. So, its a waiting game.

For how long, who knows, maybe we'll see the funimation version before 2010.

PS: buy the DRAGON BOX #3: DB series.

Later.

I don't know, I have a hard time believing that. I can't even find a Trimark website.

Nah, I don't have anywhere near enough money for that and plus there are no subtitles! I like to understand what I'm watching. Anyway, I already own the other 10 volumes of Dragon Ball. Having these volumes in my opinion is better than the Dragon Box because you get the original Japanese track with subtitles and the dub. As for the extras the Dragon Box has, I really don't care about them. It's the actual episodes that matter to me.

And you shouldn't, because not even representitives at the Funimation booth, at anime conventions know anything about when the liscense will expire.
If there was ANY hint that the liscense was close to expiration, or had been renewed, we as fans would be all over that information in a second. As it stands, it's been several years since the initial, and only Trimark dub, and we've heard nothing of the sort.

If I were you I wouldn't believe some of the shit Dragonbox has been saying, Slick. I mean seriously, if the people at the FUNi booth don't know, and years and years after the dub we still have no more information on the matter than we started with, what makes you think a hobby-shop owner will know any better than us?

I gurantee you, if we ever find out about it, Daizex, and likely Anime News Network will be the first places that information hits. It's been long in waiting, and fans have been clammoring for the first 13 episodes, so when it hits, it will hit BIG!

I heard in the Toonzone.net forums, under the "Ask a FUNimation Rep" thread, that FUNi has the First 13 episodes of DB as well as "Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle" for release some time in 2006. The guy from FUNi, wasn't 100% sure.

Uh... a lot of things get said there, like the Princess Snake episode where you see Goku naked, and the hench-woman shoot herself, was supposedly a mixed up tape, and that it was not supposed to air.
Of course that, like many other "forum" information sounds like bullshit. Like I said before, wait until you see information about it on AnimeNewsNetwork, or here, at Daizex; then you will know the cold hard facts, that are (for lack of a better saying) "streight from the horses mouth."

And like I said in the previous post, we really don't know anything about the situation. What we do know however is this:

1.) The Trimark contract is still in effect, and will last for an indeterminate amount of time.

2.) FUNimation has long since dubbed both the movie, and the episodes; but because of the circumstances with Trimark, they're pretty much just sitting collecting dust (so to speak.)

3.) FUNimation representitives are absolutely clueless on the subject.

And to elaborate on #3: Recently VegettoEX/Mike spoke to a representitive of FUNimation, at his last Anime convention, named "Lance," and if I am remembering correctly, he remarked when he got back, and gave us in the Daizenshuu EX chatroom a rundown of the events, that Lance had no better idea of the situation than the rest of us. Which is never a good sign.
[Note: I could be mistaken as to when this exchange actually took place, but I believe it was a month or so back now. If I am incorrect about this, though, I hope Mike will helpfully correct the matter. :) ]

Anyway, I am sure everyone reading this (in the US, or another country where DB 1-13 has not been distributed yet,) is hopeful of these events coming to pass in our life time, but my hopes are consistently dashed as each year passes  ; so don't expect them any time soon.

Let me just say that FUNi reps in general seem to be slightly clueless. Julian, Sebastian, and I went to their panel at Anime Boston and they didn't seem to have much info on anything. Gotta love their claim that Pioneer's DVDs "weren't really uncut".

What brand/model DVD player do you have? It's possible to unlock many of them and make them region 0 (region free). I unlocked my dad's a few weeks back. Not that I've got any discs that'd need a region free player as of yet, but I've done it. The only drawback is that sometimes there are playback issues with some discs after unlocking, or so I've heard.

<Kaboom> Neither does Rita

Thank you for validating me, B.

Yeah, they sometimes have those issues; thats why I am avoiding doing it to my moms dvd player.

Speaking of getting rid of region restrictions, I wonder if theres a way to bypass those on an Xbox, or PS2, for dvd playback...?

You can use a Gameshark or something of that nature (there're a couple products out right now). You should be able to find them real cheap, so it's not that big of a deal. Unfortunately, I've never heard of changing PS2/Xbox region codes via remote hack (you can only do this on select DVD players anyways).

Of course, there are also several ways to mod the systems, but then you're getting into shakey territory.

GameShark I really don't know, but I do know that the ActionReplay website lists a product thats supposed to do the job. But as far as that goes, my question really toe'd the line at remote hacks.
I know about mods, and what they can do, but thats as far as it goes from there. I have little, and no interest in a product declared illegal even as far back as the PS1, and gives the user the power to break their $200.00 console.

I did find one hack trick for my DVD player to make it Region 0 on the internet so I tried it but it didn't work.

Yea, the PS2 version of the Action Replay has a function in it called DVD Region X that allows you to play any region DVD on a PS2. It's all done using the disc so it isn't really modding the system. The problem is apparently according to the Action Replay website Sony had completely taken out anyway for the newer PS2s (models 50001R & 70012) to play any PAL DVDs. The original PS2 is model #30001R. I have one of the newer "slim" models of the PS2 and that's model #70012. So they say even the DVD Region X won't work with Region 4.

Even if I found a way to play a Region 4 disc, the biggest problem is most PAL DVDs display improperly on an NTSC format TV. So even if I could play the disc, I wouldn't be able to watch it on any of my TVs. That's why I really want the Region 1 DVDs.

Sorry guys! The guy answering questions at Toonzone was indeed Lance! Haha!

By the way, there are some noname DVD players out there that can auto-convert PAL to NTSC and vice-versa.
