The censoring of "friggen / freakin" reminds me a bit too much of that awful, "I'm a freaking genius!" from Vegeta in one of the first "Captain Ginyu" tapes in 1999 :P.

...Thanks Mike, I was finally repressing early Season Three thanks to Kai, and you had to remind me, lol.

But yeah, I do remember those silly lines as a kid (1999? So, I was 11, not 22 *I've doubled since then*), but they were less bothersome when I was younger. Now, I'm glad I have a good dub to go back to (and a sub when in the mood).

Yeah, I still don't get edits of pseudo swears, like friggen, crud, darn, etc. They're not real swears, so why bother? Well, it's mostly just friggen/fricken/freaking...still, the point stands; they come pre-censored for your child's amusement.

Actually, wasn't the line "I'm a friggin/an absolute genius"? Here I go, picking the nits.

And, here is episode 20. I'll put up 21 once we hit the next page.

The Rebellion Against Freeza! Vegeta's Burning Ambition!

Image

Image

About two minutes into the episode Krillin, Gohan and Bulma are spotted by two of Freeza's men. One of the men says to the other...

Image

They eventually destroy Kami's space ship and Krillin yells out...

Image

The next edit comes in the next scene. Vegeta and Cui are about to face off. Cui gloats to Vegeta about how much stronger he is but Vegeta starts to power up and Cui is looking a little worried and says that this can't be, they've always been on par with each other. Vegeta yells out...

Image

At this point Cui is begging Vegeta not to kill him. Telling him if they team up, they could stop Freeza. Vegeta says...

Image

Desperate, Cui yells as if Freeza was right behind Vegeta, Vegeta looks and Cui starts blasting away. This has no affect on Vegeta and reminds Cui that his speed has improved as well, then says...

Image

As Cui tries to fly off, Vegeta punches him, which is edited with a flash. But it's kinda weird because this flash is so fast you wouldn't really notice it, it's not like the previous flash edits.

Image

Vegeta then kills him with a blast. The shot of Cui actually exploding was edited out.

Image

Meanwhile, Krillin Gohan and Bulma are looking to set up camp when Freeza and his men fly right by them. Krillin notices they have the DragonBalls. Hopelessness and frustration start to settle in as he yells out...

Image

Back on Earth, Yajirobe comes to visit Goku with some senzu beans. The first thing he says is...

Image

After Roshi explains the situation to Goku, he seems really excited. Goku rushes off, after having just ate a senzu bean. Yajarobe then says to Roshi...

Image

That's it for episode 20!

So, only a few edits of swears, direct words referencing death, and a bit of a violence censor? Not bad, all things considered. In the old Toonami days (and soon to be in the new CW4Kids days), there would end up being a lot worse done to the episodes.

Just curiously, what do you think was the most amusing Nicktoons Edit thus far, Tanooki?

@Mewzard - In episode 19 when they changed the word "wound" to "injury". What was the point of that?!

@Gaffer Tape - No... what are you talking about... ::shifty eyes, nervous laugh::

Small nitpick but why is the H in Hells capitalized when Yajirobe is talking? It's just kinda bothering me.

Either way this post get's us closer to episode 21 comparisons.

However, unlike Tenchi's edit (which were semi see-through, clearly added over the work), these are ridiculously saturated, and lacking a black border, unlike the rest of his outline, which is just all kinds of silly. I could have done a better edit with MS Paint. Not much better...but still.
Shortly after the episode first aired, this literally took me less than a minute in MS Paint.

I also did this at the time. I posted them in another thread a while back.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but did they fix the error with Dende's brothers and sisters on the DVD?

Technically, it should be "Hell's", since it's short for "Hell does".

I believe I heard that "Brothers and sisters" could be considered a correct translation of the line, but doesn't quite work for the genderless Namekians (unless some Namekians love to act a bit feminine, lol).

Sabat wanted to fix it for the DVD, but didn't know if he had time. Because they were continuously dubbing both uncut dub and Nicktoons dub, not to mention all the other dubs Sabat is involved with. It was a balancing act for time.

Heh, I can't help but ask... how is "genderless" any more masculine than feminine?

I believe he's going by the example of Namekians we're given. For the most part, they act relatively masculine, though ultimately, they're pretty low-key people in general.

Well, Namekians aren't exactly gender neutral. Didn't the conversation pan out as Namekians only having one gender rather than no gender period?

Well, they reproduce asexually, so it might be more appropriate to say no gender. Gender is about differences, so I don't think there can be only one gender.

One could argue, while there is only one gender, there is more than one type of Namekian. Nail was one of the last warriors, for instance, while Dende was definitely no warrior.

Oh man, I thought I fixed it when you first said it. But I was reading it today and realized I only fixed it in the uncut word bubble. Man, it was "rouge" all this time! Ugh! Oh well, it's my own fault. :?
