Dragon Ball Manga: Best Quotes

Post by uzuni » Mon Nov 22, 2010 1:33 am

Now, although Viz has absolutely butchered this beloved manga series with its censorship and lack of cursing...there are some of us who got our hands on the earlier released volumes in their uncensored glory. On the bright side, however, Viz didn't do a half-bad job at translating the material...and certainly a much better job than some of those horrendous scans found online.

What are some of your favorite quotes found in the manga? I'll start by listing one I came across the other day.

DB Volume 21 (DBZ Volume 5) Chapter 249/55:

As Vegeta faces off against Kiwi and displays his huge power boost, Kiwi gets scared and tries to reason with him, saying how he would help him team up against Freeza. Vegeta replies with, "And here I thought you were just a coward, Kiwi...but you're a lying coward too!" And that's when he proceeds to massacre him.

Pure Vegeta badassery

Buu: "The more you make me angry, the more you'll suffer before you die."
Vegetto: *smashes Buu's face in, grabs him by the leg, flings up to the ground and spears him with a giant energy sword* "Well? Not so talkative now, are you? I thought this would be more exciting... I want you to fight for real. Or was this for real? Then I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. :3"

"I...I could try a Kaio-Ken increase to 20 times... But I don't know if my body can handle it...
and if he's really only using 50% of his power like he says... Then I'm sunk anyway...!
I've gotta take this chance...!
Please let him be bluffing this time!!!"

I love the absolute desperation from Son here, he's throwing everything on the line, and doing so without really convincing himself that it'll work.
The aftermath too, is awesome. After the awesome display of his power, Freeza is only annoyed by his resilience (and the fact that he kind of hurt his hand).
Great moment.

I don't appreciate cursing though...

Even though "I also pulled his tattered body and clothes back together...my treat." is really funny and Bulma's reaction too...I'm gonna go with this one:

If I'm still alive, I'll come to help...in three years.

That's heavy, man.

And let's not forget all the hilarious moments in the early volumes (BULMA! YOU'VE LOST YOUR BALLS!!!)

"Butchered" is way too strong a word for how Viz treated DB.

I agree. Yes, they censored some of the nudity, but that's hardly "butchering" it.

Well, it's not only that, but also cutting out weapons, erasing black people's lips and ESPECIALLY cursing...I mean, in the original japanese they'd go all out with George Carlin's shit-piss-fuck-cunt-cocksucker-motherfucker-tits-turd-twat dialogue. :P

Seriously? Have you even read the Japanese version? Some of those words don't even have Japanese equivalents.

I didn't mean literal translations of those words, I put them as an example meaning just about every cuss word in the dictionary and not limited to just bastard, damn, or ass. The later versions don't even have those words...
And yes, I've read scanlations of the Japanese versions.

So, are you telling me in the original Japanese text, there isn't as much cursing as...the anime, for example?

I haven't read it in Japanese. What I'm saying is that Dragon Ball is a childrens' Manga. You shouldn't see words like "cunt" and "cocksucker" in it.

The dialogue is the same in the anime and manga, it just depends on how you want to translate certain words. There isn't an exact equivalent to "fuck," for instance (maybe ファック/fakku I suppose, that's only the Japanese pronunciation of the English word, though. And it isn't often used, unless it's supposed to be some rowdy American saying it, or something. You won't really see that in a Shonen/kids manga, though. I did hear that a title page for D. Gray-man had "FUCK" written on a wall as graffiti, which was taken out by VIZ. I guess Japanese kids wouldn't know the difference).

くそ/kuso is literally "feces," so some like to translate it as "Shit!" But it isn't really that harsh of a word (it appears in children's manga, like DB, Naruto, One Piece, etc.), so "Damn!" or "Crap!" is more like it.

Ohh ok well that explains it. See, I was watching DBKai and I noticed on the subtitles Vegeta cussing like no tomorrow ("That little dipshit, "fucking shit") and I assumed those were the actual translations.

Nah, that's just lousy fansubbers going a little crazy. DB is for 8-year-olds, remember? :D

ちくしょう/chikusho- is another word you probably hear a lot, I think it literally means a "beast" or something, but people usually translate it to "Bastard!" くたばれ/kutabare is just a rude way to tell someone to "DIE!" (well, I guess that's always pretty rude!), but it's often translated to "Go to hell!"

Hahahaha, that's right, I forgot. So I assume Old Kaioshin didn't really call Goku a dickweed in the original manga then? :P

I added some more to my last post...

Don't know exactly when that was. When Goku blasted him in the face? I think he was just yelling things like アホ/aho, which just means "Idiot." I don't think there's really a word for "Dickweed" in Japanese. Just a wild guess...

There. I always assumed that was what he actually said and that the VIZ version had "toned it down."
