Manga Guide thoughts?
Ever thought of making a guide for Viz's manga releases in same matter as the DVD guide?
I ask this because just like the American home releases, the manga got released in different formats and I think it'll be a good reference for manga fans.

Re: Manga Guide thoughts?
As far as I know, Julian had maintained a manga chapter guide on DaizenshuuEX. That is, a huge list of the titles, both his own translation and the titles that Viz made up. I gather from your post you're hoping for more than that, but, you know, that's probably a good place to start if they were going to do something like that.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Re: Manga Guide thoughts?
I didn't mean like how many chapters a volume like the one already in the site. I meant a guide that contains info of the releases like the first monthly prints, the current Shonen Jump prints, the VizBig, the collector's editions... like when were they first released, the covers, censored or not, what denunciate them between each other.
Like how the DVD guide got info about the old singles, Ultimate Uncut, Remastered sets and the Dragon Box releases, explaining their characteristics and what do they contain.

Re: Manga Guide thoughts?
I could probably, rather easily, slap together something that resembles our current "DVD Guide" for Viz's manga. The thing is, it wouldn't be all that in-depth with regard to what kind of censoring is inside, etc... because I just don't have all that information at my immediate disposal (though I'm sure it's collected in some way throughout this forum).
It's also another example of my conflicting ideology with regard to the greater website -- just how much attention do I give the North American releases of these things? They're not my primary interest (or that of the website), so why dedicate a larger guide to them? Just because I can? I suppose. It's a little different from the DVD releases, because those contain "the original Japanese version" directly on them... whereas with manga, you don't really have anything like a "bilingual" version of a printed comic.

Re: Manga Guide thoughts?
The problem is... Despite the comic being the original format of Dragon Ball, the English version isn't exactly Dragon Ball as it should be. But even still, it's the only way English speaking people can read the comic, so it makes sense to include it on Daizenshuu EX. I bet us DaizEXers could put together all our information on the various releases and printings to help you add in the info you need.

Calm down, it's not the FUNi dub. Censorship aside, Viz did a decent job of translating the manga.linkdude20002001 wrote:The problem is... Despite the comic being the original format of Dragon Ball, the English version isn't exactly Dragon Ball as it should be.

I think you read far too much into that, as I don't see anything that would have required calming down. EX stated his thoughts fairly and clearly; explicitly covering Viz's releases in a guide doesn't completely hold the scope of DaizEX's global view.Piccolo Daimao wrote:Calm down, it's not the FUNi dub. But linkdude20002001 was saying that the English version of the manga isn't Dragon Ball "as it should be", and I said "calm down" because I considered his criticism to be too harsh. It's a good translation with some censorship, which isn't really going to have an overall effect on how you feel reading the manga.B wrote:I think you read far too much into that, as I don't see anything that would have required calming down. But Viz's release isn't Dragon Ball, it's 'Viz's translation and release of Dragon Ball'. The Japanese tankôbon on our shelves is Dragon Ball, the Japanese comic published by Shueisha.

But FUNimation's translation and release of Dragon Ball is Dragon Ball? I don't see why Steve Simmons' translation is actual Dragon Ball and Viz's translation isn't.JulieYBM wrote:But Viz's release isn't Dragon Ball, it's 'Viz's translation and release of Dragon Ball'. Re: Manga Guide thoughts?
At the very least, the original Japanese dialogue and video are presented on the DVDs as-is without alteration (well, mostly... beyond logos and title screens and such).
In manga, if you replace the original Japanese dialogue that's literally written on the page... well, you've lost what the DVDs have in the equivalent of their spoken audio. There's nothing to compare, refer to, etc. It's flat-out replaced.
Short of presenting the original manga written out in Japanese with an English script separate to correspond with it (hey, kinda like how it all USED to be done), you can't compare the two approaches.
That was SORT OF my point when I was originally responding -- it's not meant to go the "purist" route, but an accurate description of what is presented to you on a page.

Re: Manga Guide thoughts?
Okay. I thought that might have been what you meant. Well, either way I think that you should include a comic guide as it would be helpful to English speaking fans.
I wasn't sure exactly what VegettoEX meant by his statement, and I thougth that possibly that's what he meant. I don't truly think of Viz's translation as so different that it's not Dragon Ball... But I still don't own all of Dragon Ball because I refuse to get a censored comic. Though, the Vizisms do bother me...Piccolo Daimao wrote:Calm down, it's not the FUNi dub. Well, you probably used the wrong term, then, 'cuz he seemed perfectly calm, to me. If someone were to say, "OH MY FUCKING GOD, VIZ's translation of Dragon Ball is a pile of horse shit! And by censoring it, they might as well be pissing on Akira Toriyama!! GRRRR I'm mad!!!" they'd probably need a chill pill.Piccolo Daimao wrote:But linkdude20002001 was saying that the English version of the manga isn't Dragon Ball "as it should be", and I said "calm down" because I considered his criticism to be too harsh. Hahaha. Exactly! I wasn't all worked up or anything. I didn't ever say that their translation wasn't DB. I just said it wasn't "as it should be". The only way you could not like what I said is if you think DB should be censored, and should have the Vizisms, and that the original Japanese version isn't "as it should be".

Unfortunately even if it isn't "as it should be," as an English speaker the Viz translation is really all you have. I'm not going to get much good out of the Kanzenban since I cannot read them.

The criticism was too harsh, so I said you should "calm down" on it, i.e. not be so harsh on Viz. That's calm in a different senes.
