Worth noting that the opening wasn't dubbed for the purposes of being the opening, it was dubbed to replace DragonBall Densetsu. At least, if memory serves, that's where it actually went.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I would seriously like to see Barbara Goodson voice Son Goku with better voice direction!
Damn. Best English Goku AND best English Kuririn by far.

Heh, there was a thought in the back of my mind as I was listening to that that it sounded like the exact same samples of the exact same lines I'd listened to years ago at ToT. But it was really late at night at the time, so I didn't bother to follow up on that. I also noticed in the comments section someone claiming that it wasn't real, but I didn't realize the uploader of the video was saying pretty much the exact same thing!

Hahaha...either that or we can bribe Mike to do that. There HAS to be at least ONE version of The Dead Zone that he doesn't have yet!

Well, someone finally replied to my YouTube comment, but it wasn't the uploader of the video. It was just some guy mistakenly believing that both Saban and Ocean came on board from the very beginning of Dragon Ball and stayed through the first two seasons of DBZ. Sigh. I have a feeling he's not going to believe the facts. Why do I ever get involved in YouTube comments?

"We're very special friends, aren't we?"
"Yes, Chaozu."
"No - NO! I WAS NEVER YOUR FRIEND!"

Anyway, how much of the series did this dub actually go through? When did it air? I've heard of it, but only in legends.

Having watched those clips, most of the voices actually aren't half-bad. Goku's voice sounds nearly identical to Krillin's in the Funimation dub, which is by no means a bad thing. Overall, this seems like it could have been quite tolerable with some better directing and a higher budget.

And can we talk about the fact that despite epic fuck-ups like "Zero," "Bongo," and "Whiskers the Wonder Cat," they still managed to accurately translate "Shen-long?" Good lord.

I love how those lines sound when put together.

Are you sure you didn't get them mixed up? I though Gokuh sounded different than Kulilin, and I though Kulilin sounded like Steele's Kulilin.

And perhaps the acting would sound better if the audio quality was a little better.

So was the American Spanish dub of Dragon Ball based on the Harmony Gold dub, since they both used the same name changes?

At first, yes. Harmony Gold produced a short-lived English dub of "Dragon Ball," and apparently Mexico contracted with Harmony Gold to use their footage and scripts...so their early dub of "Dragon Ball" was based on the Harmony Gold English version. This wouldn't surprise me. After all, Harmony Gold are the people responsible for "Robotech," which they later exported to Mexico for a Spanish dub. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave "Dragon Ball" to the same dubbing studio, but I don't know for sure.

Since the Harmony Gold dub was so short-lived, though, so was the Mexican dub based on that one. Just as we later got our own dub, Mexico soon got their own dub as well (which was NOT based on ours).

Apparently the Mexican-Spanish sub based off the Harmony Gold dub lasted for 57 episodes. This is what baragon_kun had to say about it:
baragon_kun wrote:The Harmony Gold Dub of DB actually reached until episode 57, and there's proof.

There's actually two Latin American dubs of classic Dragonball, and the very first one was released in the early 90's, direct to video, and it uses the HG dub as a source, with their names (Goku - Zero), but since that dub was canceled, it was discontinued in Mexico.

Years later, in about 1993 - 1994 (I guess), Intetrack bought the rights to do a new dub of Dragonball, however they used as a source, the same Harmony Gold source for the dub, but restoring the original names of the characters, however it was obviously the HG dub since it had tons of censorship from the source dub, as well as a kiddy script.

In the original TV airings on local TV of the second, and regular version, of DB, some episodes with dubs to the 1st Latin dub (the Latin HG Dub) like the very 1st episodes when Goku fight the Red Ribbon Army, as well of the pirate's cave episodes. However Cartoon Network of Latin America did re-air this episodes with the regular "Standard Dub" instead.

In Mexico, Intetrack began dubbing the series direct from the original Japanese version since the Tao Pai Pai episodes, since there's no censorship in this version (although the TV syndicated television network TELEVISA did censor a couple of scenes such as the Goku flashback when he remove Bulma's panties, although CN LA did show this part uncensored).

What I dont get is why is there only audio recordings? Did some guy or girl back in 1989 decided to hold a audio recorder up the TV?

Meri didn't have a video capture card at the time, and people just keep taking the same ol' RealAudio files she put up back in 1998 or so.
