Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse
I didn't even smile when I read this page. Toriyama's treatment of gays and blacks is one of the few aspects I completely dislike about Dragon Ball. I would despise it if it wasn't for Commander Black, who, despite having that Sambo-esque face, was actually a mildly important character. To be honest, though, it doesn't surprise me that people have no problems with this whatsoever. These are the same people who cannot possibly fathom what's so racist about Mr. Popo and this. They aren't bad people for thinking this way, just ignorant, almost to the point of insensitivity. I, uh, don't really get what's up with Salagir, though. Maybe I should've bailed with Rocketman, because now I can't really give myself an answer I can accept.

Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse
Wow this is pretty insensitive and politically incorrect!
Almost as much as making Broly a match for Vegetto!
Good heavens!
Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse
Why are you assuming they are weak...?
First, the action cut back to Goku and Vegeta talking, while they exchanged numerous blows, so it was more than 5 seconds. Probably a minute or so.
Second, kid Gotenks, in the manga, couldn`t sustain his SSJ3 for more than 5 minutes. After that, even his fusion would cease, even if 30 minutes hadn`t already passed, as implied by Trunks and Goten in the manga. And it was not only kid Gotenks, Goku also had this kind of trouble when he was fighting kid buu.
Anyway, it will all be explained. Just wait for the translated pages. I could just tell you what they say, but I`d rather not abuse my position.
(I`m starting to regret showing this japanese pages... Without the translation you are all taking it the wrong way...).
As for the issue itself, I`d much rather see the issue criticized with humor, satire and irony (as it has been done in this minicomic), than seeing people trying to demonize the issue and try and make it go away by ignoring it or doing worse than that (which eventually leads to blue Mr. Popos).

Sure... Do that because of a minicomic that isn`t even part of the manga, that only intends to make fun of those old cliches (as explained by Salagir) and that apparently isn`t offending the readers who happen to be black, like jjgp1112, who are the only ones who have a right to be offended if they feel like it.Deep Thought wrote: Maybe I should've bailed with Rocketman, because now I can't really give myself an answer I can accept.

As explained by Salagir in the comments section, that is a reference to how the black pirates from Asterix (and others) used to talk back in the day. It isn`t supposed to be how real black people speak.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:I watch a fair amount of American TV, and I'm pretty sure African Americans don't actually speak like that.

Why are you getting so defensive about DBM? You didn't draw it or anything. If he doesn't want to read it anymore, that's his decision. Who cares.rereboy wrote: Sure... Okay, then it's not really racist. If he started talking like a gangster however, then it would be.rereboy wrote: As explained by Salagir in the comments section, that is a reference to how the black pirates from Asterix (and others) used to talk back in the day. Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse
Why are people getting offended when the people who have more of a right to do so, aren`t even slightly offended?
Why would someone dislike DBM more for whatever is included in a minicomic that is not part of the DBM in any way?
I`m not trying to defend DBM irrationally... I just can`t understand some opinions at all... For example, your comment about how Fat Buu spoke was a logical one because you were not aware of that reference and I understood it.
But you are right, I should just let people alone. I tend to get more involved than I should when I think something doesn`t make any sense.

Oh my. Someone just has to avatar Popo-Piccolo.
On the topic, I didn't find it overall funny (perhaps part of it is because Oob's not actually black), but I'm black and I didn't find it offensive either. I didn't get Boo's "black" speak at first, but now I understand that it was supposed to be a parody of how the black pirates used to speak.
@Piccolo Daimaoh: If Boo began talking like a gangster, it wouldn't be racist. It would be stereotyping.

I'm black and I found the strip amusing. Not laugh out loud funny but just amusing.
I assumed the conversation between Goku and Vegeta couldn't have possibly last for more than five minutes. But maybe you're right, I shouldn't have jump to conclusions so quickly.rereboy wrote:Why are you assuming they are weak...?

I'm not white. That's all I'm divulging about my ethnicity, since I don't want people on this forum judging me. Some black people can say "Well, uh, I don't see what's so racist about Song of the South," and it doesn't mean that Song of the South isn't racist, it just means that those black people are ignorant. This is even more of the case, because humor is subjective, and it might not even be a result of ignorance, just not taking things so seriously. Of course, people who say that they cannot understand, at all, why other people would consider Popo to be a racist caricature are ignorant, regardless of their ethnicity.rereboy wrote:Why are people getting offended when the people who have more of a right to do so, aren`t even slightly offended?![]()
Salagir wrote it. This is his thoughts and opinions. I was maybe a little harsh on him, but not by much. I didn't like it at all. God forbid if I don't praise every single aspect of DBZ Multiverse. Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse
It could be because some people just don't react angrily to racism this mild. I understand why people consider Mr. Popo to be a racist caricature--it's blackface, plain and simple, and whether Toriyama intended for it to be funny or not, its roots still lie in something designed to take the mickey out of black people's appearance.Deep Thought wrote:I'm not white. Perhaps I shouldn't be saying "I'm black and I didn't find it offensive", because humour is subjective and people react to things differently. I may not take offence to this or my friends making dick jokes, but I would take offence to a "scientific documentary" saying that blacks are less developed than whites.
But remember that there is a difference between racism and stereotypes. That's why, if Boo started talking like a gangster, it wouldn't be racist, it would be stereotypical. However, it would be racist if Muri made a comment about black people talking stupid or something like that.

Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse
You`re right about not lasting 5 minutes. But it probably didn`t last 5 second either, which was what I was pointing out. It probably lasted 30 seconds or a minute something like that. As to why it only lasted that long, it will be explained, but its not because they are weak.Scarz wrote:I'm black and I found the strip amusing. Not laugh out loud funny but just amusing.

But like I said, this minicomic isn`t praising racism or prejudice. Its actually criticizing those old stereotypes (which include some racism or prejudice) with humor and satire, instead of just trying to ignore the issue or demonize it. You don`t have to find it funny to realize that. I didn`t laugh when I first saw it and I don`t find it particularly funny, but I understood what they were trying to do.
As for the author being the same... So what? Just because the same director does a movie you don`t like, does that mean that his other movies are instantly worth less? I don`t think so and I can`t understand what one thing has to do with the other.
And like I said, I`m not trying to defend DBM, I just can`t understand the logic in what you said. Simple as that.

Ahahaha...aha...haha....
Even if he was speaking gangster, though, that wouldn't be racist. That'd be stereotyping. And it's not like 90% of the black people I know (including family) don't speak gangster. Every stereotype is grounded in some truth, my friend.

I know, but I've watched a few American reality TV shows too. The point I was trying to make is: from my experiences, African Americans don't speak like that. Yeah, a lot of American TV is garbage nowadays.

Re: Fanmanga - DB Multiverse
That's as wide of a generalization as saying that they do speak like that. Simply put, some do, some don't. In America you'll find people of EVERY race who talk "gangster"; I happen to be acquainted with a few myself.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:The point I was trying to make is: from my experiences, African Americans don't speak like that. But on topic, I'm really liking these little mini comics. Much more than "The Awkwardly Drawn Adventures of Vegetto and his Angsty Daughter" anyway. I don't even mind that the tournament's on hold. The Gotenks fight is getting pretty dull in my opinion.
