I don't think that way. (about the art)
And I don't think DBM, DBAF or any other fanmade manga have better art.

I din't think DBSD have a great art..
But it's normal/good.
Simple and basic. For kids.
Well, I look at stuff like the vulcano after Roshi destroyed it and some of the background and I honestly think that there are lots of stuff done by fans that look way better in my opinion.

If it had been done by fans/amateurs or if it wasn`t an official release, I wouldn`t complain at all, but, since its an official release, the standards should be much higher than fan work. And since a lot of fan works look better in my opinion, well... That fact doesn`t speak very highly of the art used.

Well I finished reading it . It was cute.

Like most, I found the art to okay , not great but not bad either. We just have to keep in mind that this is aimed at little kids.

So "SD" stands for "Shrunken Down" or "Shortened Drastically"?

It's not what I expected or hoped for, but, it was cute and fun for what it was. I'll keep reading it if there's more coming.

SD stands for Super Deformed.

Is everyone sure the Kame-sennin is "that popular character"? This is only the first chapter and all, and Kame-sennin is not nearly as popular as, say, Piccolo or Vegeta.

I'm not. I think it would have to be one of the Z crew, like Piccolo or Vegeta, since they're the characters that first pop up in your mind when you think of popular characters. And seeing as it may be a non-serious one-shot remake of DB, I won't be surprised if they manage to get Piccolo or Vegeta in the story. Nothing says that the manga's going to be permanently stuck in early Dragon Ball, or they can't make big changes.

I think this captured Dragon Ball's charm well, at least.

As for the art, I agree, I've definately seen better.

I liked it. Both the art and coloring.

I think it correctly captured the DB feeling.

The only part of the art that struck me as looking odd were the poses Kame'sennin and Goku took while firing their Kamehamehas.

This was very cute. It was nice to return to a simpler and happier time training with Goku and Krillin.

I also like all the parallels to the Dragon Ball series. Such as the giant fish Goku had was like Yajirobe's, the way Krillin fell like when he first appeared in DB, or how Goku confuses Umigame to be Roshi like he confused Bubbles for Kaio. Those just made me smile, as did the comic.

Meh. As much as I was looking forward to this, I have to say I'm disappointed. Rather than taking some fun risks or wildly taking off in an irreverent new direction, this was really just a boring retread. The art was cute, but that's about all it had going for it. It wasn't funny. It wasn't engaging. It was just... boring. And... a retread. Goku thinks the wrong person is his master. Kuririn defends the shaving of his head. Goku brings a centipede for dinner. The boys are forced to survive in the wilderness before training begins. Goku has to save his companion from a pterodactyl. Goku surprises everyone by learning a Kamehameha out of nowhere. There's really nothing at all original here. It's all stuff that's been done before and done better in the original series. This feels like one of the Dragon Ball movies, but at least they retread the stories in interesting ways. Sigh. I was really hoping to like this too. Oh, well. At least Vegeta wasn't in it!

Well... at this point as long as he does something that makes this story interesting, I'll be okay with it. Because at this point, it just felt like a junior novelization of a movie: it does a passable job at imitating the events from the film, but it's pretty darned useless if you actually own the film. Despite all I said before about hoping Vegeta stayed the hell away, that was before I saw how bland the result actually was. At the very least, a young Vegeta would shake things up a bit.

So, I just read it and I didn't really like it. It didn't make me laugh or even smile. The whole thing kinda bores me. The jokes were so dull, yes we get it, normal people don't eat centipedes.... And I didn't like that this was the first time Goku and Roshi met, I actually didn't realize that until I saw this panel...

Image

Sure, one of the first panels is Goku holding the letter from his Grandfather telling him to go train with Roshi, but I just figured this could have been after the evens of the Pilaf arc. He goes home to gather his things anyway. Also, the art seemed hit or miss. Some panels are great, while others look like sub par fan art...

Image

But, despite all this, I'll still read a few more when they come out before I decide if this really isn't for me.

I'd have to say my opinion on this is kinda wishy-washy at the moment. Part of it seems like a cute little fancomic, but this is a little more, well, official than a fan comic. The art looks pretty cute, though, which is a definate turn on for me. I'm kind of interested to see where it goes from here, and probably most importantly, to find out who that "popular character" is. I have my hopes set on Piccolo, because a kid version of him playing the role of antagonist would be absolutely adorable. However, my honest self that's not trying to bend the words to what would appeal to me most thinks it's probably a kid version of Vegeta. Then again, he'd be what, 17 or so at this point in time? Probably a little old. I'd say Piccolo might make a slightly more sense in that respect.

There isn't much to say about this first chapter, it takes a lot from the original and simply reuses it in a different context. I do see some potential for interesting developments as it continues though.
