Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
I always went with the scene just being Toriyama showing his enjoyment of it, not a statement of Saiyan's abilities to survive...but, if I had to accept something, them being able to survive in the more thin portions of the atmosphere is better than nothing.

But Freeza sounded like he truly believed it. Why would Freeza bluff, knowing that even if the planet exploded, Goku could still survive and try to fight him in space?Suupaa Gohan 2 wrote:He kinda wants the guy dead. Why not bluff? If Goku doesn't respond with 'haha, joke's on you, I know Saiyajin can also survive in space!!', then he's probably golden.Piccolo Daimao wrote:But then, why would Freeza tell Goku that he couldn't survive in space (and even relish at that fact), if he knows that they actually can?
Alternatively - surviving in space might not be something you're born with/is inherent to any particular race, but a trained skill just like flying and all that other shit people do in Dragonball. They haven't exactly known each other very long, but Freeza knows that this guy is the 4th surviving Saiyajin who was on Earth, and hasn't been flying around as a space pirate working under him for all these years. Maybe he's just making a general assumption that Goku never had the training to be able to survive in space as a result?
Although your theory that surviving in space is a trained skill could be true.
I don't know much about that...but I'm pretty sure the rules of science don't apply to Dragon Ball--or, at least, not in the same way.Cootie wrote:Well, to be fair we really don't know how far the atmosphere of Planet Vegeta reaches. Freeza can survive in space and did, or at least what was left of him. It would be fun to watch Goku fight the vacuum of space.

Maybe Bardock had a huge adrenaline rush and just did it? I know he added the panel as I have the manga but really, it wasn't by Toriyama but I guess he just loved it and added it for "dramatic effect" to the story. Would it be as cool to have Bardock do it on the ground of his planet and Freeza probably wouldn't even bother to go down there to confront one saiyan. Dramatic is all, then Goku wouldn't feel tired at the "lookout" with God if he could "breathe" in space.

Just because you're in the atmosphere doesn't mean you can breath. And there's other things to kill you other than lack of oxygen.Cootie wrote:Well, to be fair we really don't know how far the atmosphere of Planet Vegeta reaches. And it makes it canon too (Bardock surviving in space, I mean). Goku taking the rabbits up to the moon is just a gag scene, so it doesn't count. Bardock being in space in his final stand against Freeza was for dramatic effect. But Freeza said Goku can't breathe in space, and Goku believed him (and why shouldn't he?). Saiyans can't survive in space.Attitudefan wrote:People always argue that saiyans can breath in space. Goku went to the moon and survived but so did the humans and the rabit, but that was before it was serious. Bardock did but that wasn't written by Toriyama so that doesn't really count.

The differing pressure, deadly gasses could be in higher levels of the atmosphere, like Ozone in ours, there could be too little breathable material, you could be exposed to too much radiation if too high up, etc.Great Saiyaman I wrote: Just because you're in the atmosphere doesn't mean you can breath. Yeah, we should just say it's a case of Toriyama tributing, because, outside of gag moments, he never showed Goku or co doing anything remotely close to being in a vacuum and surviving. Hell, Goku has to hold his breath underwater for a reason.

Are we talking about the Dragon Ball Kai dub or are we talking about surviving in space? (sarcasm)

Do we know when the next episodes will be coming on?
Also, what episode does the Namek material end again?
I'm wondering how much is left of the fight. I'm really enjoying it, and I would almost want more filler at this point, to get more Goku vs Freeza, lol.

You're wrong. Planet Vegeta has extremely high gravity; its atmosphere would be pulled tight against its surface.Cootie wrote:Well, to be fair we really don't know how far the atmosphere of Planet Vegeta reaches. I'll take your word for it. We shouldn't look for science in a show with people shooting energy beams and flying anyway.Rocketman wrote:You're wrong. Doesn't the anime make it a lot worse? Like, didn't Goku escape a black hole by firing a Kamehameha? (Or was it a star?)

It looks like the next time a new episode of DBZ Kai may air on Nicktoons is Thursday, December 16th. At least that's the next time it's slated to air in one of its standard new episode timeslots (8:00 pm Eastern).

OK. Rumour squashing time.Piccolo Daimao wrote:But then, why would Freeza tell Goku that he couldn't survive in space (and relish at that fact), if he knows that they actually can? He saw Bardock surviving in space and has no reason to assume that Goku would be any different.Suupaa Gohan 2 wrote:We can't say 100% 'no they can't survive in space'. All we know is that Freeza told Goku if the planet exploded, 'hey dude, I dunno about you, but I can survive in space, joke's on you'. Goku doesn't know daddy had a final stand against Freeza in space. He grew up on Earth with humans, and makes the pretty logical assumption that 'oh shit, if the planet explodes, I won't be able to breathe anymore'. How would Goku know one way or the other? Better safe than sorry.
Freeza has never flat-out stated that Saiyans can't survive in space.
What Freeza actually said was "I can survive in space, but I don't know about a Saiyan monkey like you." Most people tend to (erroneously) interpret that as "I can survive in space but you can't", but that's NOT WHAT HE SAID. He said "I don't know", implying that... well, he doesn't know. So you can stop using "Saiyans can't survive in space because Freeza said so" as an argument, because... he didn't say so.

Must I ask this again?
Is this forum about the Dragon Ball Kai Dub?
Or is this forum about how Saiyans breathe in space?

The Kai dub of course. It's just that people went off topic.
