If you mean the guy who keeps saying Toonzai Ball Z Kai, then yes. It sounds stupid and the guy himself is stupid. But, 4Kids had to do it for BS&P reasons so it's not like they had a choice for that edit.bkev wrote:Anyone else think that the Toonzaki dude on the fanpage is overly defensive and rather enjoys making an ass of himself? So I just finished watching the two new episodes of Kai and there was an interesting edit.
When the Grand Elder was explaining how Kami and King Piccolo became separate beings they erased the symbol on Kami and King Piccolo's chest so all that was on their chests was a blank circle.

O_o Yup, this is definitely a 4Kids "dub" of Dragon Ball. T_T

Re: DragonBall Z Kai TV Network Version (CW4Kids\Toonzai) Edits!
Shenron is back in the intro!
Edits I noticed in 25 and 26:
-Usual dialogue edits to cover up death.
-Yeah, they erased the kanji. Very 4kids-esque. CW must have found something wrong with it.
-They pulled a Saban and erased all the dead Namekian bodies.
-In one scene where that Namekian was watching Vegeta throw the dragon ball into the sea, there was a dead Namekian's legs in the shot. They made it twitch.
-They kept the light from the orange dude's blast reflecting on him, letting people know that he did blast the Namekian, but they cut the smoldering dead body(a single video frame of it is still there!) and went straight to him flying off. Very sloppy.
Nicktoons Zarbon: You cretin!
Toonzai Zarbon: Vegetaaaa!
I don't know what that's all about.
Nicktoons Vegeta: That moron...
Toonzai Vegeta: That Zarbon...
Or something to that effect.
Nicktoons and Toonzai Vegeta: I get to kill two birds with one stone!
The CW left the word kill in for once. Yay?

Well, the kanji on Piccolo Daimao's chest was "魔" which literally means "Demon" and on Kami's chest was "神" which literally means "God".gmster wrote:Yeah, they erased the kanji. Very 4kids-esque. CW must have found something wrong with it.
Re: DragonBall Z Kai TV Network Version (CW4Kids\Toonzai) Edits!
Do you think they really care about that? They just love to erase any kanji when possible, except if it would be too hard to do it every time (i.e. Gokuu's kanji on his gi). After all, 4Kids have been known to get rid of anything WRITTEN. Kanji or Roman letters, they're all gone.

4kids is not doing the edits. The network is calling the shots. If they meant Demon and God, then I see why The CW wanted it erased.
Remember, in the interview with the 4kids representative they said they are trying to air the Nicktoons version as-is, if there any differences it's the network that wanted it changed.

The Kanji also mean the same thing in Chinese, so that might be another contributing factor.

Clearly that hasn't happened, though. Whoever "they" are, the edits that "they" are making are worse than Saban's. If they want to cover up things that are so remotely offensive as kanji meaning Demon or God, then why did they bother with Dragon Ball Z Kai? Well, then again, 4Kids did buy the rights to One Piece without actually watching it...so a lack of research would not be surprising.gmster wrote:4kids is not doing the edits. ...Actually, upon further thought, I do think it would be a little surprising. Mark Kirk did say that they now have checks and balances that weren't in place before to determine what shows they acquire.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Why? Are they just doing it for the fun of it? Although, if it is a case of censorship, I don't see why, considering I doubt a lot of the children who watch would be that fluent in Japanese.Ashy-kun wrote:Do you think they really care about that? 4Kids is a strange, strange company. I remember an episode of Pokemon where they removed the English word "OIL" from the side of an oil drum...

4kids was(still are, but their recovering) in a financial rut, the ratings for their block was at an all-time low and they had lost the rights to TMNT. They needed to do something different, something big to prevent bankruptcy. Henceforth, DBZ Kai.
I think what 4kids thought was, they are getting an already-edited TV-Y7-FV version that could air without any problems. Clearly, they underestimated The CW's anal censors.

I doubt they're editing it to the CW's requirements. Who else but 4Kids would require the removal of kanji on clothing?

Re: DragonBall Z Kai TV Network Version (CW4Kids\Toonzai) Edits!
4kids never removed kanji before from Kai. Given what the kanji meant, The CW probably wanted them gone. Besides, even if 4kids wanted to edit it, they can't. It's not their dub, it's Funimations. They only have broadcasting rights.
Re: DragonBall Z Kai TV Network Version (CW4Kids\Toonzai) Edits!
Also, many text-removal shots cited as 4Kids work are from Sonic X, where those edits were done by TMS. This is very strange in general...
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: DragonBall Z Kai TV Network Version (CW4Kids\Toonzai) Edits!
TMS animated Sonic X, 4kids probably asked them to do it. Like how 4kids asked Toei to stop drawing head kanji in Ultimate Muscle.bkev wrote:Also, many text-removal shots cited as 4Kids work are from Sonic X, where those edits were done by TMS. This is very strange in general...
This particular edit to DBZ Kai is not the work of 4kids. Just something the network wanted to avoid religious controversy.

Re: DragonBall Z Kai TV Network Version (CW4Kids\Toonzai) Edits!
No, the French dub of Sonic X, which predates 4Kids' licensing of it, had those edits too. It's standard procedure for TMS to wipe their shows' international masters of japanese writing (to which degree they do so depends on the show in question; e.g. Detective Conan and Lupin got to have most text intact (with the exception of character cards in the movies and the digitally animated episodes), while other shows like Sonic X got completely scrubbed clean).gmster wrote:TMS animated Sonic X, 4kids probably asked them to do it.bkev wrote:Also, many text-removal shots cited as 4Kids work are from Sonic X, where those edits were done by TMS. For the visual edits to the Toonzai version, Funimation probably asks 4kids to do it on their behalf.
