Originally fan of the dub now a fan of the japanese version.

So today I was bored and decided to watch the Japanese version on my 1st season set. It took me 2 episodes to get used to the voices but they are fantastic so far. I love Toshio furukawa`s calm yet evil Piccolo, Chiba makes Raditz sound fucking badass and bored with his deep voice.Nowzowa is great as Goku and I love her screams. Ryo makes Vegeta seem so princely and badass.Nappa sound really messy in the way he speaks but it works quite well. I don`t think I`ll ever go back to the dub now. And I'm 13 Ps; The swearing is awsome.

I don't think there's a lot more swearing in the Japanese version than there is in the dub... at least for the first two seasons; iirc, they added tons of swearing in that redub.

But as the time period I'm talking about was that magical time between seasons 2 and 3 of the English dub airing, it was fansub tapes of later sagas that I was watching, and wanting to indulge in stuff many others in North America hadn't seen, I watched and came to prefer the Japanese version and see the dub for what it was: a total joke.

(I still watched the later seasons of the dub, though... it was free on TV.)

Agreed. I love Nozawa's Goku. He sounds like a big kid like he should. However, Kai's dub is pretty good but nowhere near as good as the Japanese version.

My theory is that if you are a fan long enough you eventually for for the Japanese with subs. Dub just doesnt cut it for me anymore and I was a HUGE fan.

I was like that too, originally watching the dub back when it was fresh, then switched to the dub with Kikuchi's score once the Season Sets came out, did sometimes watch the japanese track to check out but it felt incomplete without the opening credits & previews, but ever since the Dragon Boxes, the japanese version is the only one I watch now, occassionally the Ocean Dub when I want to get a nostalgic hit.

Watching the original feels much more complete without having to bear the reversioning and awful acting from the dub.

I think my first exposure to the Japanese version was through the occasional Japanese episode at my friend's house (thank to him having the International Channel) and the deleted TV scenes Geneon had on their DVD for DBZ Movie One. I probably also watched the three movies in Japanese as well sometimes, but I generally just watch the English dub since there's not really much wrong with it. I definitely prefer it over watching Kai in English.

I guess I never really likes the English dub. The music had always bothered me, and just everything about the show felt off. Then I got the chance to watch the first three episodes in Japanese (on the first Ultimate Uncut Edition disk), and it was AMAZING how much watching DBZ finally felt RIGHT!

Thanks to the Dragon Boxes, I'm watching episodes of the show I never saw in Japanese in either fansubs or International Chennel.

Same here. There might even be some episodes from the Artificial Human Arc and the Cell Arc that I've never seen period. But the Dragon Box Z sets are really my first time truly watching the series, since I don't count the English dub.

I was a dub fan, then I watched a few of the Japanese movies that I downloaded off of Kazaa like 6 years ago (I know it's bad *slap on the wrist*), and obviously the subs showed lots of swearing so I figured I was probably missing out on a lot of what was being said in the dub.

Few years later I get some DVDs with decent subtitles and the Japanese version just grew on me. There are still a select few episodes I prefer to watch dubbed for nostalgic value but everything else is purely subbed now.

I got my start with the dub as well, watching it on Cartoon Network a few years ago. As my fan-factor grew, I began doing research into the series beyond what I'd already seen. Eventually I was exposed to the original Japanese version, and once I learned how messed-up the dub was, I never looked back. Things like Goku's voice were never really a shock or adjustment for me, since thanks to the aforementioned research I already understood the whole "hook" behind them.

I still hold a fondness for the dub's cast, though, which is why Kai and its brand-new, awesomely-done dub is such a godsend for me.

Same here. I've watched both the Japanese dub and English dub and I still love the English dub more. And I've been a fan for how long? 10 freakin' years!

I began watching Dragon Ball Z on YTV (which is a Canadian station) and was first exposed to the Funimation voices. Then in the middle of the Cell Games the voices switched over to my shock and horror. I didn't know at the time it was the Westwood dub and I hated them but I kept on watching the dub. Finally, I purchased some of the single DVDs of the Saga sets just to see the later part of DBZ faster then the episodes were airing on TV. I also watched the Japanese version for the first time but didn't know the dialogue had been changed so much.

It actually wasn't until I was watching an episode of Dragon Ball Z in the Androids saga (via the Season Sets) where Dr. Gero's story was being explained that I realized the dub changed the whole entire story backwards (I had the subtitles on to see the difference in dialogue) and at that moment I took the remote changed the audio to Japanese and never looked back.

I do love the Funimation voices though so to be able to watch Kai with some of my favorite actors/actresses with an accurate script really is nice.

Now that's just silly to imply. You can't speak for every fan out there. I've been a fan for nearly 10 years and I still haven't cared to switch.

I am a dub fan and have tried it subbed as i do own the Dboxes. I just can not seem to get into it . However i wont say that i will never change and completely switch to subbed. Anything is possible. I do respect the fact that my dub is not true to the way DBZ is supposed to be but for now, I'm quite happy with my Funimation dub.
