Rachel's absolutely right. And the maker, Manga International is a known bootlegger. Oftentimes, their subtitles are really badly done too and they tend to flash their logo down in the corner of the screen with their website url during every episode of an anime. The subtitles aren't very accurate because you have people translating the Japanese into Chinese, then into English. You can imagine by then how much gets misinterpreted and lost in the translation. Can you tell I've seen some of their stuff or what?
Also a good tip about recognizing bootlegs, if a product seems too cheap and good to be true, it likely is, hence a bootleg.

Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."
Would that mean those One Piece dvds titles I see on every import site titled "One Piece Part *insert volume*" with subtitles are bootlegs? Crap... and they seem so authentic. (I guess 26 episodes for 26 dollars is too good to be true.)Jerseymilk wrote:Also a good tip about recognizing bootlegs, if a product seems too cheap and good to be true, it likely is, hence a bootleg.

There is no legally released One Piece DVDs in Japanese with subtitles right now, so that's the first clue that they aren't authentic. And yes the price is waaaaay too good to be true. And I've seen some of those DVDs, if they're the ones I think they are, the subtitles are some of the worst out there. Trust me, save your money and hopefully Funi will be able to release dual language DVDs over here. They may be more expensive, but you'll actually get what you paid for.

When I went to a friend's house a couple months ago, they had a bootlet copy of "Part 1 of One Piece". The animation quality was.. bad. Though it got a good laugh out of my friend's boyfriend.Jerseymilk wrote:There is no legally released One Piece DVDs in Japanese with subtitles right now, so that's the first clue that they aren't authentic. Actually, Viz has announced that they're releasing edited dvds. 4Kids, around the same time, have announced they never plan on dubbing an uncut version (after the horrible sales of Yu-gi-oh / Shaman King Uncut). But, a fan can dream... a fan can dream.Jerseymilk wrote:There is no legally released One Piece DVDs in Japanese with subtitles right now, so that's the first clue that they aren't authentic. The poor sells make sense. =/ The translations were extremely half-assed, they used dub card names in the Japanese subs (Yuugi - "Black Magician!", Subs - "Dark Magician!"), some dialogue was completely ignored... I could go on. Though Joey saying "Damn it!" made me fall off my bed.Son Goku wrote:Actually, Viz has announced that they're releasing edited dvds. 4Kids, around the same time, have announced they never plan on dubbing an uncut version (after the horrible sales of Yu-gi-oh / Shaman King Uncut). Dragon Boxes cost about $1000 each. If you see anything on an online store that looks like it might be a Dragon Box, but is less than $800, it's most likely a bootleg. There's your first hint. Here's some other helpful tips for finding bootlegs in general:
Subtitles: If there are subtitles on the DVD, be very suspicious. If the subtitles are anything other than Japanese (English, Chinese, Korean, etc.) it's a definate bootleg.
Disks: If the set comes with multiple disks (usually 3-4), it's a bootleg.
Region: Region 0 = bootleg.
Episodes: If the DVD set is something like 18 to 24 episodes in length, it's definately a bootleg. Also work out an episode-to-disk ratio, and see how many episodes there are per disk (typical Japanese releases have 3 to 5 episodes per disk).
"Part X": If the DVDs are sold "part 1 - episodes 1-20", "part 2 - episodes 21-40", etc. it's a bootleg series. They often sell DVDs for long series in chunks like this.
Art/Packaging: Before buying a disk, check the proper R2 releases, including their specs and cover art, over at www.cdjapan.co.jp. Bootlegs are often sold in cardboard foldout cases, or "fat clamshells" which hold a stack of 3 to 4 disks inside.
Price: Is it cheap? Then it's probably a bootleg. The average Japanese DVDs sell for 3800yen, and contain 4 episodes. That's about 4 episodes for $35 or about $8-$9 per episode. If you're paying $1-$3 per episode, it's definately a bootleg.
Bootlegs also generally look cheap and crappy, so just keep a sharp eye.

What interests me, is I'll go into a shop selling imports, and amongst all of these official releases, I'll see one or two bootlegs.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

Time to clear something up.
There's only really two sources to which the future of the uncut releases are determined. One being various convention reports from FUNimation, and the other being Al Khan.
FUNimation only stated that they, specifically, weren't fronted with any projects or anything regarding the uncut 4kids releases. This may be due to the fact that 4kids might not own home video rights anymore, so we'll head on over to the next point.
Al Khan stated that they "intended to release everything uncut", or something similar. Considering ShoPro-Viz are setting up "Shonen Jump Home Video", and that the distributing studio for One Piece (4kids, then Toei, then Viz, then etc) kept on changing, we can assume that any uncut or even future cut (exlcuding Yugioh, as that still is going on in edited form) releases may possibly be handled by Shopro/Viz, since they seem to want to work themselves into the market. One Piece also hasn't been a noteable hit, so I don't think 4kids forked out money for Home Video rights anyway.
Toei screwed up their own DVD releases, and is tradition with Japanese companies, completely retreated after a minor setback.
We can assume that an uncut One Piece is being made, since Madman Entertainment in Australia have confirmed an uncut, Bilingual release (assumedly using US cast) of One Piece will be coming out in early 2006. I doubt Madman would front money for a dub specifically for their release, and no one would produce something like that and not actually use it.
If you really want One Piece, wait for Odex, an R3 Singaporean company that produce Legitimate VCDs and now, DVDs. They're getting back into DVDs, and hopefully, since they have the license to One Piece (and it's asian-English dub, and subtitle translations) they might put it out on to DVD.
Time will tell. On a note about Madman Entertainment, Madman also have rights to Shaman King, but since no one has asked, they haven't said anything about the paticular details, though as far as I am aware, Shaman King hasn't been on Australian TV.

Are you talking about their R2 releases of One Piece, or their other North American releases, like Slam Dunk? Because their R2 release of One Piece is fantastic (although a little on the expensive side). But yeah, their North American releases have been falling flat.Magnaboss wrote:Toei screwed up their own DVD releases, and is tradition with Japanese companies, completely retreated after a minor setback.
