Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
I think that's called aliasing.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
It's super weird that just the opening would be like that, though.

Haven't picked this up yet, I'm just gonna wait the month and a half for the 4 Movie set.
But from these clips, I have to say. I am pleasently surprised with Ms. Clinkenbeard's Goku. I'm really not a fan of her Gohan voice, so I went into this with a negative attitude, fully prepared to bash her as Goku, thinking she'd sound completely like Luffy. But she really wow'ed me. I have to say, her voice is somewhat Nozawa-esque. While she'll never replace Stephanie in my mind, her performance seems very "Goku" and completely suiting. I give her an A. It just makes me wish more and more that FUNi would let Colleen Re-Dub that downright awful Goku from Movies 2 and 3. Bleh >.<
As far as Video goes, I've gotta say. DBOX all the way, at first glance the FUNi version does look somewhat crisp. But while it's by no means a "bad" remaster. The DBOX just looks much more natural and not overly brightened.

They probably used the regular series' textless opening masters, which being 16mm, would naturally be lower quality than the 32mm film prints for the movies.Hao_Kaiser wrote:It's super weird that just the opening would be like that, though.

Yea but I figured that would only result in a crappier picture. Not a pixilated picture. Just because the picture quality is crap, doesn't mean it's going to be pixilated... right?Puto wrote:They probably used the regular series' textless opening masters, which being 16mm, would naturally be lower quality than the 32mm film prints for the movies.
See how in "The Arrival" DVD the image is shit but, it's not really pixilated...

I see what you mean. Doesn't have that look on the Dragon Box (was noticeable on one of my earlier shots, particularly Goku's Nyoi-bo).Tanooki Kuribo wrote:Hmm, today I noticed something. I don't know the correct terminology but the opening looks very digitized. What I mean is, the lines aren't smooth, they seem very pixilated. These screen shots don't really help much but maybe you could get an idea of what I mean. This is something you'd have to see in motion, but...
You see how some of the stars in the middle look like squares?

Check out Goku's hair out line, and the band over his arm across his body, and his mouth!

But, like I said, it's something I think you'd have to see in motion. The movie is fine, it's just the intro that's like this.

Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
Thank you so much for this! I had mine pre-ordered for so long, I was wondering what happened to it. And now I know... I should be getting it soon! Although a wild surprise was getting Dragon Ball "Z" Kai Volume 3 yesterday. Totally didn't expect that one. I need to pay attention to the release dates more closely.
Anyway, I really don't care if they even kept the entire dub as the same dialog because... the rest of the rest of the series' dub is pretty different from the original, so this one movie wouldn't make up for that. As long as I get the uncensored Japanese version, I'm good to go. In fact, sometimes it's pretty damn entertaining contrasting how off the dub is. Ohs well.
Thanks again!

Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
Well, I'm not getting this due to the lack of Japanese title cards and credits (and because of the hope of an eventual DBox release), but I just had to chime in and say that, damn, Monical Rial is an awesome Bulma. I'd really only heard early episodes of her on Kai and wasn't quite sure how I felt. But I am sold on her in this character.

I'm just curious, how come Japanese title cards are so important to you (and a lot of others for that matter)?Gaffer Tape wrote:Well, I'm not getting this due to the lack of Japanese title cards and credits

Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
Most people are wanting the title cards/alternate angles because unlike new anime FUNimation is releasing, the dub of Dragon Ball was not properly translated in terms or completely made up of episode titles, lack of crediting the original cast (Finally fixed in Kai) and the use of dub spelling/terms/names which were majorily altered (Kuririn-Krillin, Tenshinhan-T i en, Freeza-Fr i eza, Kaio-sama-King Kai, Gyumao-Ox King etc).KakaR0T wrote:I'm just curious, how come Japanese title cards are so important to you (and a lot of others for that matter)?
Or simply for the sake of seeing the video in its original format/without anything affected.
Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
Gotta say that I'm very impressed with Colleen's Goku. I was never really a fan of Nadolny's (too raspy for me). As far as dvd quality goes, I like the colors a lot better on FUNimations and that it is in fullscreen but I do like that there's a lot more detail on the DBox. I'll post up some screenshot comparisons for the old Pioneer/trimark dub of the movie and FUNimation's version later.
Also, does anyone know if FUNimation will be redubbing all the movies since the 4 movie pack will be getting a release?

- Been a Dragon Ball fan ever since 1995 (at the time, I was 7 years old).
- I prefer Saffron Henderson's Kid Gohan and Kid Goku over Stephanie Nadolny's.
- I still hope for a redub of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z with FUNimation's current cast.
- I prefer to watch Dragon Ball Z with the Faulconer Score, however I do not mind the original Japanese score.

Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
I honestly didn't even know this came out. Completely slipped my mind. Got it yesterday. Really like the new dub, especially Colleen Clinkenbeard as Goku. Haven't seen the old dub since 1999-ish. Only saw it once at a friend's house and don't remember much of it, but I do vividly remember that tape having a scene where Bulma tries giving Goku a bath and his crotch is conveniently censored by a chair. Either they slapped episode footage into that old dub or my memory's going bad...it was over a decade ago, so maybe. Regardless, Funi really outdid themselves with this release. I'm frankly amazed that nobody's mentioned how good the audio master on the dub is! I've only heard the music at such a high quality on the CD releases, but never while watching the show! I couldn't get over just how damn great the music sounded. Almost makes me disappointed that this will probably be Funi's last effort into making new masters with the original show, this really sounds phenominal. Never thought the music could sound that good; it was a real shock.
Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
Have to say I think color-wise the FUNi version looks better. The Dragon Box has a gross yellow tint to it that would usually be associated with film deterioration. FUNi seems to have color corrected their footage (although they might have gone too far), whereas Toei said screw it and released the footage as-currently-is. I'd rather have slightly overblown contrast than a sickly yellow tint.

Disagree on the color. It's the way it is for a reason on the R2. What FUNimation did with this release is once again just push things toward blue, which changes a whole lot when you actually start looking at it properly (that is to say, more than just a couple shots, and particularly in motion).

Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
But why on Earth would they purposefully have given everything that yellowish color back in the day? It makes sense in the dusk shots, but not when Bulma's inside the building at night or Yamcha is yelling at Roshi mid-day. Looking at these again FUNi definitely tampered with the colors too much, but I think it needs some degree of color correction.

Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
Sorry. I didn't notice this response. I obviously can only speak for myself, but I only buy these things for the original version. I might switch to the dub track just out of curiosity's sake, but it honestly might as well not even be there as far as I'm concerned. But when I'm on the Japanese audio track, I expect to be watching the Japanese version, and suddenly having FUNimation jump in with their own work is jarring and intrusive, no less so than if they just randomly changed the audio track to English for a few seconds with no way of disabling it.KakaR0T wrote:I'm just curious, how come Japanese title cards are so important to you (and a lot of others for that matter)?

I know I wasn't present for this discussion originally, but I'd like to point out that the aliasing problem also occurs on the second GT ending on the green bricks. It's only that ending, and it's really bizarre. Anyone have a theory on why this happens?

Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
I just read Mikes review of movie one and listened to the sample between the new release and the dragon box audio and it is disgusting. Is the audio of the R1 dragon box that much different than the R2's? I have all four but haven't got around to watching them yet. What about the 2 disc Dragonball episodes releases and the blue bricks?
I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one.
Re: Dragon Ball Movie 1 Dvd Dissection/Discussion
The release from FUNimation isn't a 'Dragon Box' release.skatezeppelin wrote:I just read Mikes review of movie one and listened to the sample between the new release and the dragon box audio and it is disgusting.
