Garlic Jr appreciation thread.

Post by Garlic » Fri Dec 17, 2010 5:52 pm

Yes at last I have made a thread regarding my favourite character....... Garlic JR!
When we are first introduced to him he comes off as some tiny weak imp. Then we see him beat the crap out of Kami-Sama! Then he transforms against Piccolo and Goku and puts up a decent fight. Then he opens the dead zone hoping to trap everyone in there for good but gets sucked in himself thanks to Gohan! Not to mention he`s the first villian to become immortal! The saga rules too in my opinion! Image

Well, his movie was alright but he brought out the one thing that could stop him even though he's immortal.

And, uh, he didn't do so hot with his filler arc, which was less his fault and more the other characters and plot points stupidity.

So, he stopped himself and starred in an terrible arc he didn't ruin? I still like him, I guess.

Yay, appreciation is back. Garlic Jr, the one and only pure-evil Pilaf. His saga was a little on the long side, but cut it here and there....and it's actually a neat saga to watch.

Possitive points:

- He came with an entire movie for a backstory. Very interesting.
- Killer-clown music.
- His deadzone looked epic.
- He had the most effective way of concerring the world.

Coming across a Garlic Jr. fan is a rare occurance.

My favorite thing about him? He ties the series back to that good-old Earth-based mysticism that it had really moved away from by the time his arc roles around. It had been way too long since we'd seen anything from gods or demons not expressly involving the afterlife system introduced in the Saiyan arc.

Also, I really didn't get this until I watched the arc in Japanese, but he's pretty creepy. He has a deep monstrous voice in that little body. I don't know if I ever really bought Piccolo being kind of the demons, but with this guy, I absolutely do.

Ultimately he just fills a role that none of the other villains do, and that's enough to enjoy his addition to the series. He's a very cool counterpoint to God and Piccolo.

My favourite movie villain. His Emperor Pilaf-wannabe design is badass, didn't like his transformed state too much. Too bulky imo :/

I loved Garlic Jr...... in movie 1. I really thought bringing him back was pushing it. I also really like the voices he was given, both in the dub and the original. However, my favourite has got to be Akira Kamiya.

Movie 1 is one of the best as it has old-school DB style fight sequences. Contrary to popular opinion I've always kind of liked the Garlic Jr. Saga (Yeah, some of the Marron filler got old quick, but some was enjoyable.), as it gave other characters aside from Goku a chance to be the heroes and actually succeed in saving the day.

Great villain, and Movie 1 was one of my favorite DBZ movies next to Movie 5, Movie 6, Movie 8, and Movie 13. His own story arc was okay, I can see why people hated it since it made Movie 1 canon to the anime and making it cause major plot holes. And that the saga had some awful moments with Korin, and Kuririn's girl friend.

I do wish he would appear in more DBZ video games, but I do like how his saga got some small references in the Buu saga, and GT.

Oh yeah Garlic Jr.

I'm a big fan of him too. When his Saga first aired i totally didn't expect such kind of things. I think i've known him before a bit from the first Movie, but not that much. The Saga has a special place in my ranking, because of the Fact that Goku is still lost in Space and just can't save the Day this time and of it's old school atmosphere, indeed. Goku with his Super Saiyan Power just didn't belong in there. Same for Vegeta. But i like his cameos in Space.

The Black Water Mist and its causes, Garlics immortality, Makyo Star and the pushes for Piccolo, Gohan and yeah Krillin (he was able to do some harm to Garlic Jr.) makes this to an enjoyable Filler Arc.

I can only speak for DBZ Movie 1, since I haven't watched the Garlic Jr. arc yet, but I liked his demonic character. I like how he was the only villain to achieve true immortality, and how his own technique ultimately ended in his entrapment. Plus, the film added some good backstory to obtaining the throne of God of Earth.

I like Garlic Jr.'s voice actor in the Japanese version. It's annoying how in the dub they give him pretty much the same voice they gave Pilaf, which makes them seem like similar characters even though they aren't at all.

You know that in the Japanese version of the Garlic Jr. Saga he is voiced by Shigeru Chiba, who also voiced Pilaf. In movie 1 he is voiced by Akira Kamiya though.

It's been a while since I have seen Pilaf in Dragon Ball though, so I can't tell you how similar Chiba's portrayals of the characters seem.

Completely different. I had no idea it was the same actor for quite sometime. His Pilaf is scratchy and high-pitched, very similar to Chuck Huber's. His Garlic Jr. is monstrously deep-voiced and incredibly creepy.

I should have known. From what I have seen of his other work Chiba has a pretty good range.
