I think it would be a bit unduly harsh to denigrate the actors and actresses at FUNimation based solely upon their performances on DBZ. After all, great actors (not to insinuate that all of the actors on FUNimation's payroll are necessarily exemplary) oftentimes only display a mere modicum of their ability whilst dubbing over pre-existing work.

I'm currently watching the episode where Nappa and Goku fight. I must say Nappa`s Japanese VA is extremely Intimidating.Ryo`s Vegeta is excellent with his calm headed thinking in helping Nappa in battle.

I stopped watching Dragon ball/Z/GT when I was around 13 or so because I thought it was stupid and cheesy. The Japanese version is the reason I started getting into the show again because I realized it was just the english dub that sounded stupid and cheesy to me.

That was the same with me too, years ago I had been put off or lost interest because of the heavily reversioning and replaced generic score several times but ever since I started the Japanese version on the Dragon Boxes, I've been hooked ever since.

But the filler completely ruins any pacing the show has. There was no reason Toei had to adapt the series simultaneously with the manga, they could've waited until enough time had passed that they'd never even get close to catching up, and then made an adaptation that doesn't add a bunch of needless shit.

Well, remember that at that point Toriyama didn't intend to write Dragon Ball for that much longer. There was no concrete ending planned at the time, but TOEI might have figured that the manga would end before the anime came close enough to the source material that it became any kind of issue, both because Dragon Ball didn't seem like the type to become that lengthy at the time (I doubt that anyone could have predicted that it would continue running up until close to ten years later and wrap up in early 1995, anyway) and because Toriyama was known for creating fairly short stories. The anime got around three-four years of brisk material before things started slowing down, though. The 23rd Budokai's whenever some of the more infamous habits of the anime started to become prominent (Long, extended pans across shocked audience members, etc), but I don't think it reached the slow pace associated with the series until Namek. So... about February 1986-April 1990. November 1988 if you're harsher than I am and think the 23rd Budokai's too slow. I never really minded the anime's pacing, but I probably would have preferred more filler arcs and episodes rather than dragging out the source. The more frequent filler mini-arcs in Dragon Ball was a personal advantage it had for me over Dragon Ball Z.

It's true that they probably started too early, though; whenever you compare Dragon Ball to other long-running series, it's easy to understand how the pacing slowed down so much. The anime started February 26th 1986, two days after chapter 61 and just more than a year after the manga started in December 1984. That probably seemed like enough insulation at the time, but of course the manga ended up running close to nine years longer. The Naruto anime started just under three years after the manga, but it had one of the longest filler marathons ever (The longest, maybe? I can't think of any other show that comes close to 85 episodes of straight filler), and I don't know much about Bleach but I think it has a lot of filler as well despite starting over three years after the manga. One Piece has likewise slowed down to a crawl in recent years even though it started late 1999 as opposed to the manga's 1997. So TOEI didn't have as much space with Dragon Ball as they might have first thought.

Yes, technically I did respond, but when you use that expression it usually means you strongly disagree with what that person said and you don't even try to argue with them, because you seriously oppose what they said, but of course it's a matter of opinion. But this is daizex so I am sure many people here understand how good of a VA Horikawa is. To really dignify him with a serious response would be to ask him why he feels that way. Sorry, if this doesn't make much sense. I gotta stop getting drunk and coming home to browse the Daizex forums, its just way too fun

I remember a few years ago when Dragon Ball Z was on TV, I absolutely hated it. Maybe it was the voices, or another reason. I don't know why I hated it... so years later my little 9-year-old cousin begged me to watch the first episode of Dragon Ball (dubbed, of course) with him. So, finally, I gave in, and... well... I kind of liked it. I was sure the Japanese version was better, so I went out and bought the first Dragon Ball season set (which I will sell eventually if and when FUNimation releases a Dragon Box for the series), and I absolutely loved the Japanese version. I got into it enough and I decided to skip ahead to Dragon Ball Z, but beforehand I saw an episode or two of Kai, and, when hearing Goku's seiyu, I was kind of... not pleased. But as the series progressed, I grew attached to Masako Nozawa's voice. I love the Japanese version of the anime, and, as AnimeMaakuo said, "Once you go sub, you never go back to dub!"
