Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad?
What are your thoughts on this spinoff?? I thought it was humorous and there are a few laughs here and there. However, there are some inconsistencies regarding the original manga, including Goku's grandfather's letter to Kame-sen'nin, Kuririn arriving at the island first, and Kame-sen'nin's training regimen.

I didn't like it. It's not bad, but it really isn't for the common fan. It's a rehash of Dragon Ball and pointless for current fans. This seems like it was just made to draw in more fans for a new generation. Also, it seemed fan made to me.

In a sense, it kind of was fanmade.dragondyle wrote:Also, it seemed fan made to me.
I have mixed feelings about it. Sure it's cute, but it really doesn't bring anything new to the table. All of the jokes it used are ones that were already in the series. If there's more of a twist in following chapters, maybe I'll care about it. For now it's just "meh."
Re: Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad??
Its kinda cute, but Its nothing new, just a retelling of Krillin and Goku training.Been there ,done that.

It's pointless if you ask me.
Re: Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad??
The art was cute, but the story felt kind of like it took too much from the original and made me wonder why they'd make it if they weren't going to do anything really different with it. I would rather see blanks be filled than simply retread the same material. Show me some of Goku and Kuririn's exploits that weren't mostly ripped from the original manga. I'd been hoping that "popular character" would turn out to be Vegeta, but it looks like maybe they just meant Kamesennin?
That said, if there are more chapters I'd at least give 2 and 3 a fair read.

It was just a "junior novelization"-esque rehash. The art was cute, but the story not-so-boldly went where Toriyama had gone before.

Indeed, in a way, it sort of was a "fanmade" project... I liked the art, and I noticed that a lot of jokes in it came from the original manga, which kind of bothered me (like the "bald" joke). And I thought Goku's Kamehame-Ha scene was a little too expected and a bit cliché.

I only wonder why Roshi has a gigantic head and a tiny body. The animation is nice. Kind of a new generation take on the old Toriyama drawing style.

That's part of the "SD" ("Super Deformed") style.TheGreatness25 wrote:I only wonder why Roshi has a gigantic head and a tiny body.

It's not bad. The art is good (while Chopperman art is a complete failure).
Cons:
• It wasn't necessary to shrunk Kame-sennin. While I understand it's "SD", Goku and Kuririn are normally like that. It would feel better if they keep the other characters the same.
• The author should try to retell the original manga story (i.e. first time Goku witness Kame-sennin Kamehameha). It should tell parts of the story that were not seen.

I like it, but then again I took it for what it was, read it once, had a chuckle, and moved on with the rest of my life. If you're expecting more than that out of it, then you've got the wrong idea.

The title is giving me the idea of a song "Super Saiyan Squad" to the SuperHero Squad theme.

Re: Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad?
Well, it wasn't all that bad. I agree with Kendamu, I never looked at it again after I read it once. It wouldn't be a manga I would buy every tankōbon for. It was entertaining to read through and admire the the art style for a little while, but I don't think it has a very good point.
I thought it was actually kind of cute, seeing a sort-of "chibi" art style for Dragon Ball.Fox666 wrote: • It wasn't necessary to shrunk Kame-sennin. While I understand it's "SD", Goku and Kuririn are normally like that. It would feel better if they keep the other characters the same.

Re: Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad?
My only expectation for it was "silly fun entertainment," and it failed miserably on that level. I take it I must have gotten the wrong idea, and that the expectation for it was supposed to be "tepid bore." I apologize for my expectations being too high.

Re: Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad?
It was .....cute.
But like Gaffer Tape , my expectations were a little higher, even though I knew it wouldn't be anything spectacular.
I mean I know this was meant for little kids, but still....
I don't really understand this "for little kids" approach they're taking for the DB franchise. I got the same feeling from Jump Special which I also wasn't THAT impressed with. Aren't there more "older" fans of DB than there are new.

But they're trying to cater towards a "new" generation of the Dragon Ball audience, you're unimportant in this fact. The franchise has already got you as a fan and doesn't need to get you hooked on it again but, children who are too young to be completely or even at all exposed to the series' to begin with are the prime target. This is obviously a marketing campaign to continue the franchise as a whole into the future by getting a new audience to be able to continue the sales within Japan where the original series finished about 15 years ago through the 'new' Dragon Ball Kai, Dragon Ball SD, merchandise and games released on a regular basis.

Re: Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad?
I may be wrong on this, but aren't there reruns of Dragon Ball Z on TV in Japan? If so, the so-called "new generation" can get into it by watching the original anime. I'm guessing this was made just to keep the franchise alive, and for the "new generation" to be exposed to the franchise.Patient-mental wrote:But they're trying to cater towards a "new" generation of the Dragon Ball audience, you're unimportant in this fact. Re: Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad?
Was nothing special. If you're going to compete with the other spin offs, at least try doing something new and different instead of redrawing parts of the original story.
Idea was below average and art was decent.
