Scouter Colours

Post by Piccolo Daimao » Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:33 pm

I'm not sure how the scouters are coloured in the manga, but in the anime and the movies, what different scouter colours? Because Vegeta, Tullece and Freeza have red scouters because they're leaders, while the henchmen have green scouters. But are there any other colours of scouters?

I remember a blue scouter. That's what Zarbon had in the Anime.

I believe Raditz had a blue scouter, in the manga, while he had a green one in the anime. I'm sure there are other discrepancies like this.

Porbably not, just a modern animation color palette.

Well Tarble can't really be brought up in this because it's been so many years removed that even if Akira Toriyama wrote the entire thing and focused on it and whatnot, he'd probably forget all, if any rules he assigned to the Scouters.

I think it's just to bring some diversity to them. Like the armor colors.

Frieza, Vegeta, and Turles had red scouters. I think Dodoria had a red one too. Nappa, Tarble and I think Zarbon had blue ones. Raditz had green and Abo and Cado had bluish purple ones.

I've also noticed some of the scouters are rounded and some are square. Like the part that goes over the persons ear.

I used to think like many fans that the color indicated a model type, with green being the least advanced and blue the most advanced. Yet that seems silly since we saw Zarbon's scouter blow up early on Namek when it read Vegeta's power level, while Dodoria's green one was able to read it fine. Then again I am not sure whether the whole blowing up thing was because the level read was too high or the speed of the intense rise in ki causes it. Then again that latter idea of mine is probably not true since Freeza specifically asks Ginyu for newer model scouters. Anywho, nowadays I figure the different colors are simply an aesthetic difference for one reason or another. A fanon, "in-universe" idea could be that the color denotes not the model's quality but where or by whom it was made.

Wow, I have waaay to much time to think about this. :P

The model is indicated by the format, not the color.

The first model is the used by the majority of characters. Raditz, Vegeta, Cui, Zarbon and others Freeza soldiers...

Raditz's scouter blow up reading 21,000 and rising from Goku Kaio-ken 3x, while Cui and Zarbon scouters blow up at 22,000 from Vegeta powering-up against Cui.

Image

Dodoria scouter is almost identical, with the difference of a button/screw (this aesthetic difference is not present from the beggining, since Toriyama only came up with the idea of Dodoria's having a different model during Vegeta and Cui fight).

It can read Vegeta's battle power of 24,000 with no problem.

Image

And finally there is the model used by the Ginyu Force and Freeza. The appearance is considerable different.

It reads 180,000 from Goku using the Kaio-ken with no problem, and finally blow up while reading Vegeta's battle power against Freeza which should be around 500,000.

I always liked that little touch of realism that scouters came in different colors like phones. It also makes me smirk for some reason to think of some henchman asking Freeza or Vegeta what color scouter they wanted.

Seeing as how athletically concerned with themselves the Ginyu force were I find it weird they didn't try to color coordinate their scouters.

I wanna know who supplied Table with his scouter which read post Boo arc Super Saiya-jin Goku's battle power before finally exploding. That has to be quite the advanced model! Maybe he was still considered one of Freeza's remnant soldiers, albeit a reluctant and weak one?

Not necessarily considering Goku has mastered Super Saiya-jin and completely controls just how much ki he is outputting.
I could imagine that he only went up to the level Vegeta had, when Freeza's scouter blew up.

I always thought that there was a scouter colour system. That green was for ordinary henchmen, blue was for elite warriors and red was for the leaders. Basically, the colours indicated ranks. But I see Toriyama didn't really have any consistent colouring.

In the manga all scouters are green.

The anime use different colors that somewhat represent the character personality/hole. Big bad boss are red, etc.

Actually, Chibi Mystic Gohan said that Raditz had a blue scouter in the manga. But maybe all the others are green. I liked what the anime did with the bosses having red scouters.

^Nah, man. The scouter was green. I just checked. It looked weird early on, but once Krillin takes the scouter from Raditz and hands it to Bulma, it's hard to miss.

It may look blue or something erlse in the pages with limited colors.

Image Image

But it's clearly green in the full-colored ones:

Image

Not to say that it's also green in Toriyama's more recent drawing for the Tankobon cover...

Oh, OK. So they're all supposed to be green.

That title page isn't one of the limited-color pages. (I believe all of Toriyama's title pages are in full-color.) Notice the blue color of the scouter, and the blue shading in his armor. They're grey, in the actual chapter. I'd say this is just another case of Toriyama being inconsistent with the colors. Anyone have examples of other people's scouters? I know there's some color pages of Dodoria and Zarbon out there...
