Dragon Ball SD: Good or Bad?

It was mediocre to me. While I loved how it covered one of my favorite chapters of the original manga, I also hated it just being a retread of material already covered in the manga. I would have rather had nothing at all instead of this waste of time.

Hmm... to me, it was nice to see something new, but I understand when you say a "waste of time". Actually, the "one-month survival" training could have been interesting filler in the anime.

But they're trying to cater towards a "new" generation of the Dragon Ball audience, you're unimportant in this fact. The franchise has already got you as a fan and doesn't need to get you hooked on it again but, children who are too young to be completely or even at all exposed to the series' to begin with are the prime target. This is obviously a marketing campaign to continue the franchise as a whole into the future by getting a new audience to be able to continue the sales within Japan where the original series finished about 15 years ago through the 'new' Dragon Ball Kai, Dragon Ball SD, merchandise and games released on a regular basis.

I may be wrong on this, but aren't there reruns of Dragon Ball Z on TV in Japan? If so, the so-called "new generation" can get into it by watching the original anime. I'm guessing this was made just to keep the franchise alive, and for the "new generation" to be exposed to the franchise.

Except that Kai isn't doing that well in sales. It was given an early morning TV slot so that kids could watch it and if you look at animenewsnetwork.com's weekly anime TV ranking, it's one of the most viewed shows in Japan but when it comes to actual DVD sales profit, it's not doing so good. So you have to wonder if this "new generation" is worth investing in.

This makes sense. A Kai Blu-ray set in Japan costs more than 100 USD.

The art was decent, but I felt Ooishi was playing it too safe. A boring retread of Goku and Kuririn's training which didn't go out of its way to make any fun new twists to the story. Although, this was intended for little kids, so maybe they'd get more enjoyment out of it than I did.
